  1. Costco executive card
  2. How does that work? Do they have the same the same PM, requirements? Is it just different tech / achitectures adopted by different teams. Fascinating
  3. I have health insurance and a costco membership. I would totally use it if they cap the price at $29.

Anything has to be better than the virtual visit that I had with OneMedical last year.

Story time: I needed a prescription refill and I booked with a nurse practitioner through OneMedical. During my appointment, within the first couple of minutes I told the nurse the prescription that I needed. She then spent ten minutes asking filler questions about my medical history which had nothing to the drugs which I was requesting. Then she sends the prescription to my pharmacy. So far so good. OneMedical then bills me bloody $220 for this visit.

Later on I found out that this nurse practitioner was employed by OneMedical. I figured I would call their office to ask how they can justify these prices. When I call their billing department, they kept hanging up / disconnecting on me. When I reached out to them on their website, they are blaming my insurance company for my large bill.

At no time before I booked my visit was I informed how much I would have to pay despite asking repeatedly. I am all for this costco partnership. Here is hoping that the don't turn into the next OneMedical.

  4. The pace of renewal / refurbishment for work related and personal may not have the same frequency for most folks. Work laptops updated every 3 years approximately (at least in tech). Personal use may be 5-12 years. I bought a Macbook Pro in 2012 for myself. The next personal purchase I made was 2022 when I bought the mac mini. For everything else I used the computer which was given to me at work.
  5. Regarding the photo library, I can speak for my wife. We have a kindergartener and one of my wife's favorite activities is to watch pictures / videos of our kid in bed. She can do this for hours on end to entertain herself.

She also likes to watch movies on an iphone instead of a big screen cause she can use it while performing other tasks (cooking, cleaning etc). She has always said no to a larger form factor like a iPad but I think this might be a good use case for her.

  6. Maybe they will sell you an iGlove )in the future) to go along with this so that you can type / click on your virtual keyboard & mouse
  7. I have a 5 year old who loves building blocks and legos. We are not even too particular about quality. When I buy blocks for my kid, I am looking for him to learn to have fun by himself without Mom/Dad becoming involved and that is very hard ask with lego competitors. We tried buying from lego competitors but then they are missing pieces or their instructions are lacking which is very difficult for a small child to deal with.
  8. As a parent, I feel for them and this is definitely a situation where cops overstepped their bounds.

To play devil's advocate: I am wondering if we have created a system where the cost of being wrong is too high. Imagine what would happen if the police didn't investigate and something had gone wrong? Or look at Gabby Petito's parents who are trying to sue the Moab police.

  9. Another airbnb scam story: Several years back, I booked a place on Airbnb (thankfully it was just for 1 night), turned up at the provided address and had was not able to enter the premises. Contacted host and was told it was at a different address. I had to catch another cab to get there. Turns out the host was a renter and was illegally subletting on Airbnb. When I reported this to Airbnb and left a negative review, my review was removed within a couple of days. Airbnb knows which side of the bread is buttered.
  10. I disagree with the alt-right categorization. I am thankful I am not a teacher who has to lead a discussion in a liberal arts school. I am asian(Indian) and while I have heard / seen plenty of offensive content against my ilk, I have never felt threatened / fearsome or the need to play the victim card like the Ms. Wedatalla. >“Who do I call at 8 a.m.,” she asked, when “you see someone disrespecting and offending your religion?”

    Over the top, much?

  11. Mind sharing the parts involved and how to put this together? Wife drinks a lot of sodastream. Thanks
  12. Am no defend-the-blue type of person but all of you claiming that the police turn up with excessive force for swatting need to educate yourself. Please watch https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9IFPRyFW9F4

These swatters want the police to turn up and use deadly force. They use voice & call scramblers to call the police. The swatters tell the dispatchers that they are mentally unstable / psychotic and have already killed multiple family members and are ready to inflict more damage. Dispatchers have very little time / training to identify if this call is authentic. They just relay the information to the cops who turn up expecting to face a hail of bullets.

  13. >Sometimes I feel like just suspending the world background process and being still would be nice. But I don’t have sudo.

You absolutely can do this if you go on a meditation retreat. I went to https://www.dhamma.org/en-US/courses/search though I am sure you can find other schools of meditation. My experience was that you are not allowed to talk for the duration of the course and just focus on breathing & meditation (10 days in my case). It brought a great deal of calm and focus into my life.

  14. I don't mind if there are certain companies which don't want to list their salary range. However, they also need to be respectful of candidates' time and energy.

Recently I had a company reach out to me and after asking me many questions about my background for an hour, the recruiter asks me, "What is your salary expectation?". I said I would rather not say but would be happy to let them know if their range is acceptable to me. The recruiter rambles a bit about how they recruit from all over the world and then tells me that is not how they operate and I must give a number. I refused and they hung up. Of course it is their prerogative if they don't want to provide the number or need my number up front. But then they can be upfront about it early in the call. They should not waste my time for an hour and drain my energy in the process.

  15. I remember they had a really expensive subscription model (even for solo developers). They were looking to get traction based on the reputation of the founders and other tech influencers (like Kent C Dodds) in the react community.

Personally I felt that they were not very clear on who their target audience was and what was the niche that they were trying to address to transition from good to great dev experience.

  16. At what age is it appropriate? My kid is going to be 5 soon and loves playing with Legos. Thanks
  17. I had a bunch of onsites and Google was the one only one which caused me angst. The fastest that the recruiter ever responded to me was in two days and the scheduler was based in India which meant 1+ day response time.

So during my onsite, one of my interviewers turned up around 5+ minutes late and I realized a) I had no idea what to do about this as recruiter is not responsive b). There is nothing stopping the interviewer from just saying "the candidate is a no show. Rejected!"

  18. Serious question: How do you vet for these? I would be interested in a founding engineer position as well but how do you know that the company itself has potential and not just hot air. Additionally, it seems I cannot get into an early stage startup cause I have never worked in an early stage startup.
  19. Can you clarify "main thread"? Do you have a code example? Asking as Node is single threaded.

    Thanks

  20. My wife is very active in various Mom's groups. When we were living in San Francisco, she was invited to a 1 year birthday party. This was for all kids who were all having their 1 year anniversary (+/- 1 month). Met at golden gate park and there must have been at least 100 families there that day. After that there were various posts inviting folks to form smaller cliques / pods around different neighborhoods. We never got into it cause most of the ensuing invites were for weekdays and both of us work.
  21. That sounds amazing. How do I get in on that ride? :)
  22. Sounds like a nice retirement plan, if you can get it and can stand it
  23. My conversatons with my brother who works at Apple goes something like this. Me: "What are you working on?" Him: "All I can tell you is that I am working on a project which will launch later this year and you hear about it in the news."
  24. Pretty sure if you mandate these policies, it would violate the Equal Employment Opportunity act
  25. Can you clarify what actions that you would like employers to take? AFAICT, employers are trying to out reach to marginalized communities and meet them where they are. How are companies supposed to hire without compromising quality? Are you suggesting a quota based system similar to the green card system?
  26. Unrelated but does anyone have tips on debugging async code in Nodejs. My work has a gigantic Nodejs monorepo and frankly I am struggling so pointers would be appreciated. There is dependency injection & layers of async / await abstraction.

Not fun, when I model my code / unit test against a working sample and some method 25+ layers down does not work as expected as it does not have expected input when the stack frame does not even give me the caller. Is there a better way than peppering the codebase with logging statements?

  27. I don't want to look for a new job but it seems like my current company is practically begging me to start a job search. My job, which I joined last year, moved equity grant to quarterly vesting mid last year and my vesting date has been moved back 3+ months. This directly violates the terms of my offer letter which explicitly mentions vesting on 1 year anniversary of join date. The change was made after I joined and they made the change retroactive. But asking the equity team is like talking to a wall
  28. My wife joined Amazon in Jan. She says that in her department (does not work in engineering), they are yet to see a change in comp and they are trying to figure out if it is real or just a PR stunt.
  29. While you want to do your best, the key is to remember that the world is not going to come to an end if you fail that interview. For me, becoming too results oriented (am i going to get this job mindset) vs process oriented (how do I get better at interviewing and take each interview as a practice session) helped. Is it easy in practice? No, especially when you know you could double your comp in certain companies and you can feel your opportunity slipping away during a bad interview but the worst case is that you go back to your cushy job and your family still loves you.
  30. Ageismm is illegal. Leaving that aside, I think you are selling yourself short here about entry level / junior positions. If you tell the recruiter you are entry level that is what they are going to do. Instead of just focussing on the tech, think about a framework for the transferable skills you bring to the table.

To clarify transferrable skills there are two aspects: I am assuming you have prior experience in an unrelated field here. - I would recommend you learn about the software development life cycle (SDLC) and reflect on work you have done in a prior role which can be contextualized into planning, analysis, design, execution, maintenance phases. Write down that story and practice it till you can narrate it in a believable manner - Behavioural interviews: This is where companies try to probe your prior experience to see if you would be a good fit. Learn about the STAR method and see what experience / stories you can have in your aresnal that you can commmunicate effectively. You need to communicate that you are a good team player, collaborate well, are adaptable and a quick learner.

If you can do these well, you are far ahead of most other candidates.

Regarding the ageism question: I suggest reflecting on what is the question behind the question. Many engineers change jobs often and hence many companies have even given up on investing on recruiting entry level / junior folks. So if a company is willing to recruit junior engineers, then they might be wondering why should I invest in this person who might be in a different stage in their life / career?

It is understood in most companies that entry level / junior positions require a lot of hand holding. Not just in the tech but in how to work in the SDLC and collaborate well, reach for help when they are stuck etc.
