  1. whereas i heard it was POHM (Prisoner of Her Majesty) stencilled on clothing and articles of folks who had been "transported"..
  2. I find the free version of plex - once I config out all their own streaming junk - is perfectly good.. (and it runs acceptably on my ancient synology) Are there any compelling reasons for me to look in to jellyfin?
  3. Checks out - for a while there, the future seemed appealing.. right now, I would guess most folks would prefer to escape into the past.
  4. you think?!? doesn't read like it at all to me...
  5. Meh.. Needs ios18.. But thank you - I salute the effort!
  6. Agree this is very inspiring - I suspect many folks out there might respond to a simple approach like this. I have fallen off several wagons in this regard, Convict Conditioning and the Busy Dad Routine most recently - generally because, although fun and encouraging initially, they are just too much faff from an administrative perspective!

I am up for this! One question: do you accrue push-ups during the day in a 'greasing the groove' type approach and then stick in the total at end of day? Or more of a session? Just curious what was successful for you...

  7. Great thought. Hereafter-based hosting. Why shouldn't you be in control of your data after the Rapture? That's going to be a big dollar...
  8. Where's the Underground Resistance when you need it!?
  9. great rabbit-hole - https://people.uncw.edu/kozloffm/glubb.pdf - for those unencumbered by search engine skills. 250 years indeed...
  10. äI! äI! Cthulhu fhtagn! Ph'nglui mglw’nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn! - ??
  11. Where else might we find narcissistic, man-children elevated to dangerous levels of authority?!? (most likely that was your point)

I saw a fascinating documentary addressing the fact that the 3 primary leaders of the belligerents in WWI were competitive cousins - amazing that Nicky, George and Little Willi all knew one another as children! And yes, the analysis was that Wilhelm felt excluded and was never very mature - sorry I don't remember the documentary title but there is a summary of the facts here: https://www.bbc.co.uk/history/british/britain_wwone/cousins_...

  12. I agree with most of this analysis - but a problem with your last paragraph is that many of the public are not/do not care to be sufficiently informed and therefore do not believe it. They think net zero/solar/anti-fracking is some sort of leftist plot.
  13. And how much will you bet?
  14. or those same customers may elect the next, even-more-extreme, ill-informed idiotic wingnut that comes along with a pat theory about bringing industry back on-shore in 4 years by tossing out foreigners/applying ludicrous tariffs/whatever... increased prices affect politics - which affects everything.
  15. Another allulose fan here. I use it as part of a half-baked, sort-of-keto approach to help me avoid carbs and sugar. Unlike Stevia, I find it has pretty much no distinctive aftertaste - it seems too good to be true. I'm in the UK and buy it mail-order from the US as it is still awaiting regulatory approval in the EU/UK afaik... Does anyone have more background on this process or why it is delayed? Anything I can find via search seems heavily polluted by quack health BS...
  16. I had always assumed this was co-option of the Winter Equinox - otherwise it seems a heck of a coincidence.. Is there no evidence of this?

EDIT - sorry, I see this is discussed below...

  17. Surely you jest?!? Its about 10 days since the Orange One rug-pulled NATO - you think MI6 has had time to plan and auth a false-flag op on a US-flagged ship - never mind decide it would be a profitable course of action? Not a chance. A Russian operation OTOH? Quite possibly - anchors get dragged for 60 miles and snagged on undersea cables, people fall out of windows or are poisoned with nerve agents while living quiet lives in foreign countries...
  18. What I keep not understanding - from this side of the Atlantic where the debate over COVID restrictions appears to have been a lot less charged - is why 'the right' in the US seem to lose sight of the fact that these restrictions were put in place because of a global pandemic whose ultimate trajectory was unknown at the time. They were not put in place because of some social ideology - though I would accept there was overcaution on the science front. I don't think the left worships Fauci, he just came to represent 'scientism' - as opposed to gargling with bleach - and was blindly defended just as Musk and Thiel have come to represent anarcho-capitalism, whether this is a fair representation of their views.
  19. Not sure what this is tweaking (I'll check) but this does not seem to affect the described behaviour.. PgUp/Down does nothing - with and without shift - and mousewheel still just scrolls thru shell comand history and I need to use Ctrl-B ] to get into session output history..
  20. Plus he also had the smarts to use plausible mechanisms to remove advanced computers (the Butlerian Jihad) and nuclear weapons (some sort of extreme taboo based on a historical event IIRC? it's been a while..) from the technologies available to the Dune universe. This allowed the exploration of all sorts of human developmental possibilities - the Bene Gesserit and mentats, advanced schools of martial art and mental discipline etc.

On the topic of the Butlerian Jihad, and its echo of the historic Islamic taboo on art representing living things - looking around the current world and bearing in mind how twisted out of shape our social conversation has arguably become so quickly given that iPhones only landed in 2007... you have to wonder whether it is such an outlandish idea. Looking at the news over the last few weeks and months makes me realise that it is incredibly hard to see outside your historical moment, until things just happen! There are many possibilities and reality can get weird...

  21. username checks out. (sorry, couldn't resist)
  22. You and er, Madison, right? This article is riddled with generalisations, oversimplifications and many comments that are vague to the point of being almost misleading - or certainly of limited value given the lack of context. This is the level of technical article I increasingly encounter out there these days... In a way I suppose it's good in that we all have to fall back on reputable sources again rather than be tempted to hit a search engine where we will this sort of traffic-generating, borderline chatgpt, cut'n'paste salad, complete with occasional chirpy "WAL is a gamechanger!" sorts of comments. And a 'deep-dive'? Sheesh. Anyone looking for a reasonably deep dive - and the first encouraging sign you might notice is that it's >1500 words - could do a lot worse than go here...

  23. bah.. this explains the lovely low price I got the 1st edition for from Amazon last week...
  24. Really badly - I was a huge fan of piacasa, basic though it was, until those grifters at google canned it so that I had to send all my photos to their DC. Now I have a horribly fractured collection across phone uploads, a NAS backend and some scattered portable HDs. Looking for that wet weekend to combine them all, at least from a storage perspective. But as to what I use to index them, I have just never found a replacement I liked, paid or otherwise. Looking forward to your responses.
  25. Tell me about it! At least I got to see Orbital...
  26. Can anyone explain what we are seeing in that video from Parker - dust particles I assume? But what kind of frame rate, which camera direction etc?
  27. ooh! phil wadler lectured me at glasgow.. he was always listenable but he's got funnier...
