  1. This is very cool! And it'll only get better. I do wonder, if, at least as a patch-up job, they could do some light audio processing to remove the raspiness from the voices.
  2. I tried the web chat with their model, I asked only one thing: "version check". It replied with the following: "I am Claude, made by Anthropic. My current model version is Claude 3.5 Sonnet."
  3. I got the following: "... a linguistic purist who will defend a 32-bit Atom CPU until the heat death of the universe or the next Debian update."

Interesting, semi-accurate, though with some of the other things it wrote, it was completely wrong: "You claim labels are limitations that prevent you from being yourself, then immediately spend 500 words explaining why your entire identity is based on being a 1%er." I wish I was a 1%er, sadly I'm on the other side of the spectrum, currently with no money, so I'm on my fourth day of not eating, though luckily I should receive my salary this week or the next, so it'll be alright!

  4. I also use xfce, my computer is an Acer Aspire One, limited in ... well everything, I did upgrade the storage to an SSD, but it's still an Atom CPU, so whatever is the lightest is the best.
  5. I bought Path of Exile 2, spent 5 hours just waiting to get access to the servers, something about the movement in the game made me physically ill after just two hours of playing, asked for a refund, was denied.
  6. I'm very sad to see them drop support for 32-bit, since that is the computer on which I have been using Debian for the past 10 years...

Does anyone have any suggestions for a 32-bit distro that's still being updated?

  7. I don't quite understand this, does it mean that Debian will no longer support 32-bit computers or is this something different?
  8. I've only had bad experiences with Parker pens and refills, they just don't flow and fill the line as nicely and constantly as Pilot Hi-Tec and other Pilot pens.

I paid more than 20€ for a Parker pen with refills and it was worse than a 3€ Pilot V5 Hi-Tecpoint (which is my current favourite, I have it in black, red, green, blue and pink colours).

  9. I used to drive a Toyota Yaris Hybrid and I really liked it, I moved to a different country and couldn't take the car with me and now I drive a scooter, but if I'll ever buy a car again, it'll most likely be a hybrid, I really like the range.
  10. I had that happen in Portugal when I was refueling my scooter, the Galp gas station tired to take 100€, which I didn't have to it took everything it could, but then said that I don't have enough money to pay, even though it was less than 10€... I had to pay with cash and I didn't see the money that was taken on my debit card for almost a month...
  11. I wouldn't worry too much about it.

It's just that AI/LLM is in fashion at the moment, but it'll pass as all trends pass. Before it was crypto and "Rewritten in Rust". Trends come and they go.

If you're finding that it's affecting your mental health, it might be better to just take a break, there's a high likelihood that HN will still be here when you return. ^^

  12. While I don't have data to support the number, I would say that it's a pretty safe bet to say that majority of Steam Deck owners do not use the desktop mode on regular basis, they might check out what it is, but the majority probably stays in the game mode.

Regarding your point, do realise that just by being a NH reader, you're in the 1%, not to mention all the other delineations that are commonly attributed to the HN crowd.

    We are not the majority.

  13. The answer to most of this question is just this: "Because it's good enough."

It's good enough, it gets the job done and does not cause enough friction for the person to feel the need to improve. Complacency.

  14. Microsoft naming makes sense if you imagine that the person that came up with the names was stoned, like high on weed.

"Yo dude, to use the spreadsheets you've got to like excel and stuff. ", "When you make your point it's gotta be powerful. ", "Ain't my point having a database if you can't access it. ", "A: I need a tool to write my book, it's gonna change the world. B: Word bro, word. ", "Bro, you have to connect with people to expand your outlook on life, the world and stuff. ".

  15. I like to call it X-Twitter.

In a way it is correct, since when spoken it sounds like you're saying ex-twitter.

  16. I always saw these labels as limitations, like if you say that you're a vegan, you can't eat all the other stuff.

It was because of that point of view that I always avoided labeling myself or my behaviour, because (in my mind) I did not want to be limited.

But I guess I'm the odd one.

  17. I know it's supposed to be BitChat, but once you notice BitchAt, it's kind of difficult to unsee it...
  18. It always makes me sad when a language's alphabet is different from their phonetic alphabet because it means that unless you hear how the word is pronounced there's basically no way of know how to pronounce it. Right now I'm learning Portuguese Portuguese and it just makes me so sad that it legit pushed me away from learning the language.

They pronounce 's' at the end on the word the same as how they pronounce 'x' and many many more such examples, basically no word is pronounced the way it's written.

My native language is Slovenian, the way you say the letters in the alphabet is how you pronounce them in 99% of the words and even if you miss-pronounce the 1%, the words are usually so close that people still understand you.

It just really made me appreciate my language even though it has many other things that just makes it difficult to the point that most of my writings are in English, were I don't really need to think about all the rules and can just focus on telling the story.

I'm of the opinion that all languages should use their phonetic alphabet as their alphabet, that way, once you've learned the (phonetical) alphabet you would know how to pronounce all the words. (Unlike in Portuguese where milk is written as 'leite' but it's pronounced very similarly to the word 'light' in English. (not to mention the Brazilian Portuguese)).

And to the Spanish people, your language is just slightly more aligned than Portuguese, but nowhere near as clear as I would like it to be.

I agree with the parent, Greek is much easier to pronounce, at least when compared to Spanish and Portuguese, though though the emphasis of the words not always being at the front of the word can make things a bit difficult, I'm looking at you κοτόπουλο (chicken).

  19. >excluding XREAL

You mean you haven't tested XREAL or you didn't find XREAL as too heavy?

I'm asking because I have Viture XR Pro which are basically a clone of XREAL and I find them too heavy after a few hours of use.

I would really like a solution that wouldn't be as heavy and that would have clear displays where text would be readable from edge to edge.

  20. I wonder if you could replace the display with just more batteries, that way you can still close up the laptop for travel while having a lot longer battery life.
  21. Probably because the AR/XR glasses are not yet at a stage where they could be used by the general populace.

I have Viture XR Pro, the edges are still blurry and even though glasses have a miopia adjustment it has been difficult for me to get a clear image, not to mention the issues of IPD. Having a display at arms length still has many advantages over the face mounted displays.

That being said, as someone who feels the need to wipe any and every speck of dust off the display, the glasses have resolved that issue, it's just that they get heavy and painful after just a few hours of use.

In my opinion, we're not there yet, but I'm very optimistic for the future.

  22. Something that also LLMs should remember: "If I had more time, I would have written a shorter letter" -Blaise Pascal (I think).
  23. These are really nice! I've been waiting for the AIs to get good enough so that I could use them to generate game art, especially because I can't draw at all and because game dev is just a hobby, I can't spend money on it to hire someone to do the art for me.
  24. Also something that doesn't slowly poison you over time like what plastics (microplastics) do with microplastics. There's almost no way to get rid of those from our body except breastfeeding, but in that case, it's actually even worse, since usually people don't breastfeed for fun.
  25. I think one of the massive hurdles, maybe, to overcome when trying to achieve AGI, is how do you solve the issue of doing things without being prompted, you know curiosity and such.

Let's say we have a humanoid robot standing in a room that has a window open, at what point would the AI powering the robot decide that it's time to close the window?

That's probably one of the reasons why, I don't really see LLMs as much more than just algorithms that give us different responses just because we keep changing the seed...

  26. Meanwhile Microsoft Edge ships with an Ad Blocker both on desktop and on mobile!
  27. Do you think the base model is still worth it at 1249€?
  28. How would the DeepSeek fit into this?

Or can it not compare? I don't know much about this stuff, but I've heard recently many people talk about DeepSeek and how unexpected it was.

  29. How can I use the 'dead man strategy' if I've just started investing and don't own any stocks?

Because if I already need to have some stocks, than this being the #1 strategy feels like those advice that you get on the internet where if you want to be rich just get born into a wealthy family.

Statistically probably true, but not really doable. :/

I feel like you can only do the 'dead man strategy' when your already dead, since before that it's probably better to keep adding money into the portfolio.
