  1. > I recall going to Reddit in like 2010-2012, back when there was pretty much only college kids on it, and the posts were often witty and interesting.

Well, there was also narwhal bacon and Streetlamp Le Moose.

  2. Is it a lost art or does nobody do it more than they have to because it was always such bear?
  3. What terminology should we be using? Old Chinese reconstructions on Wiktionary always look so wildly divergent to me.
  4. I think the confusion here is in the placement of the vowels. おお and おう do sound identical when pronounced as a single unit, but the おう in 小売 (こ.うり) isn't a single unit, it's just a お that happens to be next to a う
  5. > Also, frustrating that people have somehow landed in a place where they either trust nothing or trust everything, with no ability to calibrate based on the actual track record and incentive structure of the source.

I don't read celebrity news, how should I know People's track record?

  6. It's a different kind of math from the continuous math they teach in school. Personally I found it a lot more intuitive. Like it wasn't the easiest thing ever, but I did better than I thought I would.
  7. It's half dead bacteria, it's not supposed to smell like a bed of roses.
  8. My personal collection got so big I started forgetting what was in it lol. I had to write a program to catalog everything and present a directory tree of genre combinations with FUSE
  9. The new context menu is so awful. There is zero reason in this day and age for a context menu to take multiple seconds to pop up. They didn't even really improve on it in any meaningful way.
  10. I got so frustrated with how slow the file explorer got after my work laptop updated. Turns out the new UI is just shell extensions, if you add registry keys to redirect them to non-existent paths you get the old file explorer back.
  11. How is that going to help? It's still dog slow even after running all day.
  12. What's wrong with baking?
  13. On my 5 year old work laptop it was so bad it was nearly unusable. I found that disabling the shell extensions they used to implement the new file explorer UI helped a lot with that.
  14. If you ignore the spaces, the only real difference between German and English compound nouns are the infixes between elements to show bracketing. Case in point: Nomenkompositum
  15. As an F# lover my heart sank at that "it turned out" at first. I'm glad someone got to live the dream somewhere haha
  16. I also had it stop working completely. I thought they finally wised up to my adblocker, but I decided to finally install that update I had been sitting on for a while and it just started working again
  17. It looks like this isn't an actual translator, it's just transcribing the consonants into uniliteral hieroglyphs.
  18. > For example, one format I use is just to concatenate multiple files into a single one, I use it to group video timeline seeker images into one file - it is faster than using archive or tar/gzip

I did something like this when I was moving my files onto a new computer like 25 years ago, and all I had was a floppy drive. Just continuously dump the data onto a floppy until space runs out and ask for another one until there are no more files.

  19. Except it didn't get those Germanic qualities by borrowing them from German, it got them by shared heritage.
  20. I played around with Squeak this summer and made a few demos of showing how inserts and removals work in binary search trees and B-trees. I also wrote a tree-walking Smalltalk interpreter in F# and an implementation of the game of life for it. It was a blast.
  21. I mean it's also in cheese. People just aren't used to the weird tang, and I don't blame them. I can tolerate it but Hershey's isn't exactly my favorite haha
  22. That would be the butyric acid.
  23. That was what I did for a year before I found out Revanced Manager had a patch for Reddit is fun. That was an inconvenient year.
  24. You can format it on one line if you want. Please don't do that, though. Personally I prefer the method syntax with one method per line, it reads more linear than the query syntax.
  25. For some reason this is an unstable sound. There's also a g/j/ch alternation in some northern varieties of German
  26. I loved this site when I was a teenager. It's where like half of my taste in music came from
  27. > The disembodied others are pretending to be god in the minds of others.

    > My friendlies tell me the dirty secrets of others, my enemies tell others strange lies to mess with me.

This is exactly what my mother believes, and I can tell you that everything they've told her about me or the rest of the family has been 100% dead wrong every time.

  28. From what I understand, they believe God intended that to be part of the fun.
