  1. hopefully a lot of local libraries will have access. i could spend hours sifting through this.
  2. i upvoted you, but it would be very helpful to add a description to what you’re linking rather than just dropping it with no description whatsoever.
  3. does disney think a future is coming where the company who owns the model may be able to claim copyright on anything it’s model creates?

because that’s the only way this makes sense to me.

  4. removing a bunch of the context of what i said does not somehow magically alter what i was expressing in my post.

that’s very bad faith, hn is better than that.

  5. i’ve said it before on similar stories and i’ll say again, ill never understand people who put cameras inside their house.
  6. > Everyone that needed to verify for their own sanity did indeed find proof.

i suspect in more than a few of those cases. their severe paranoia behavior actually led to the break which led directly to the cheating.

seriously, if you’re that paranoid, either seek individual/couples counseling or just end the relationship, something else is very very broken.

and if your partner is tracking you, run fast and run far, that person is not well.

  7. partner installing cameras to try and catch them cheating? that’s creepy af, no wonder they’re cheating.

if they can’t leave their creepy partner for some reason, hopefully they look up how to bypass security cameras in an obvious way just to annoy the creepy guy.

  8. people participating as beta testers with no way to opt out is absolutely the norm now.

from video games to software to “self-driving” cars, we’re all unpaid beta testers for unfinished and often unsafe products.

  9. this seems like credit bureaus charging us to protect our data they keep losing.
  10. > The problem in USA is that producing insuline is so regulated that setting up and maintaining production is obnoxiously expensive.

i don’t buy it. no other oecd nation has insulin prices as absurd as the us. this is a greed problem.

the only people to blame when the government starts producing insulin will be the pharmaceutical companies and their refusal to be decent members of society. if they were even a tiny fraction more decent they wouldn’t be in the mess they’re directly causing.

far too often companies are directly to blame for regulation as they repeatedly absolutely refuse to self-regulate and be decent pieces of society.

  11. this is a fantastic book. immediately what i thought about the instant you mentioned the church committee.
  12. i understand the initial inclination, but leaving our libraries worth of historical data at the whims of our tech monarchs seems like a bad idea.

we know for absolute fact they’ll remove or alter data to entirely change answers. we _know_ they’ll do this.

  13. you jest but it is wild how often people declare “if it was ‘advanced’ and outside of Europe, it was probably aliens. not the people, it was aliens, obviously.”
  14. i’m not entirely sure what you’re implying here.

i could absolutely be wrong since your post was kinda vague, so forgive me if i’m wrong, but are you implying we shouldn’t attempt mitigation of bad things because other bad things are happening elsewhere?

  15. i’m sorry, but when it comes to open source software if you want something on your timeline, you do it. the code is there. it’s _open_.

if “a duty” exists at all in this situation, it’s on the 4th wealthiest company in the world who is using that free software to serve its customers and raking in billions of dollars. (i want to be clear tho, that company does contribute a lot to the open source community. a whole lot. i’m just saying, if someone is hunting for a “duty” to fling around re: an open source project)

i was once naively saying some undeserved similar nonsense to a well known open source dev regarding some software package they were working on years ago, and he responded absolutely appropriately, [paraphrasing] “go ahead, you should absolutely do it, see if it’s better. none of us here are stopping you. we genuinely hope it is, truly. let us know. until then we’re working on other stuff.”

he was absolutely correct and i should have known better. not snotty at all, just, “you should totally do it!” that’s the appropriate answer every single time someone behaves as if your open source project owes them something. even more so when it’s the 4th richest company in the world.

so if you feel “a duty” exists somewhere to change something with ffmpeg, do it yourself. literally no one is stopping you. it’s _open source_.

  16. that’s a lot of “what if” wild hypotheticals.

clearview knows for absolute certain they’ve been operating in the eu.

  17. > Should European citizens be subject to the laws of Russia, China, Iran, North Korea, and pals?

if they do business in those jurisdictions, yes, of course.

if a new york cpa does business in ohio they need to be licensed in ohio and follow ohio laws. even if their firm and majority of work is based in new york.

i’m really surprised people find this confusing.

  18. > So is your argument that a company must follow laws of any locality they scrape information on the internet from?

i mean… yes? it’s entirely normal for a company to be bound to the laws of jurisdiction it wants to open a store or restaurant in or whatever. why on earth would this be any different?

  19. people are overcomplicating this, the big picture is simple af:

if a therapist was ever found to have said to this to a suicidal person, they would be immediately stripped of their license and maybe jailed.

  20. i mean, you can assume if its on theregister its not going to have some kind of academic rigor or whatever it might be you're looking for. its the register, same basic rigor quality as the ny post.

that said, my suspicion is they're likely on to something here regarding layoffs and quality degradation.
