  1. Another DE or distro will have other issues. Since my comment I found also that my current distro has a bug that removed support for DisplayLink in USB hubs (monitors connected over to hub without using USB alt-mode).

It was easy to fix, but issues like this prevent common folk of using Linux.

  2. 1. Has issues with drawing fo me

    2. Could be nicer. All it does shows edit fields and that's it

Since then, I found kde actually supports direct control of monitor brightness from its UI. That's what I call nice!

  3. Sounds intriguing
  4. I have extemely weird bug where on Windows, many games crash quickly. My laptop is Lenovo legion 7i pro w/rtx4080.

I tried a lot of things, inclusing full windows reinstall, driver rollback, cleaning from dust etc etc. Crash reason is listed as "other" Nvidia driver error code.

Bazzite using Proton it works flawlessly. God of war,KCD2 and others. I guess, it will be Linux gaming for me from now on.

I am still puzzled why this situation even can be. If you have ideas, be my guest.

  5. It was fine back then, but now I can't tolerate even a minute of CRT TV or low frequency monitor.
  6. I am not sure how people get all these issues. I installed fresh windows recently, and I don't see noticable any slowdowns.

Linux is faster in some places, maybe. But still with many issues like some applications not being drawn properly or just some applications not available (nice GUI for monitor control over ddc)

  7. It is not simpler, if you don't know the exact magic line that does it for the specific application. GUI tools allow for easy and convenient search.
  8. Afaik "eating healthy" research is almost always observational. And hard to untangle it from socioeconomical status.

In the last years there is some doubt among researchers that "eating healthy" is the magic cure all. It plays some role, but it may be overblown in the public view.

  9. I don't think you will be forced. I removed it long ago, and still don't have it.
  10. I don't see how TikTok readies you for more TikTok. You can safely combine it with YouTube longs and movies/documentaries.

I set a limit to avoid too much TikTok. And also TikTok often shows me 3-10 minute educational content, which I consider pretty well made. Dan McClellan talks about bible, form example. Or Jason Pargin on different topics. Brittney Hartley on nihilism and atheism.

  11. I had many cases of help from strangers in my life. One was not from a total stranger, but still.

I was couchsurfing with a bicycle, and was not able to find a place to stay on the last day. So, instead of trying I asked a guy where I stayed the first day if I can return. Not only he agreed, but also helped to get to the airport with my packaged bike.

Another case was when I stayed in Jordan, and the guy who I rented apt from helped us so much for free. He helped us to get to the dead sea (with two bikes, no less!), fought for the price with street traders so we could get an honest price and so on.

And the final and best story is about a people who found us trying to put up a tent during the huge storm in iceland.

They invited us to spend a night in their camping cabin and shared their dinner with us. This happened after we were going 12 hours through the storm with a heavily packed bikes. IT felt like an angels touch. I almost cried due to happiness (I hardly ever cried back then).

  12. Yeah, currently generated content made with some interconnected ideas, vision, script and talent is kinda better than I thought it will be. I expected it will be extremely sloppy at first.
  13. AI generated by demand, most likely. Or AI generated by indie creators who have a vision but not a budget, and are provided with a platform to create content easily.
  14. Are you sure? I've recently watched a video where presenter mentioned how Lunar Lake based laptops are better then any Snapdragon.

    For example https://www.pcworld.com/article/2463714/tested-intels-lunar-...

  15. Afaik iq correlates highly with g-factor (scientific name for general intelligence). We don't have much better ways to measure it.

Overall, afaik, again, problem solving often needed in our society correlates with this: "general intelligence". When people say: "But there are many ways to approach a problem, many types of intelligence".

This very well may be, but data consistently shows that people having high IQ scores solve different problems better. So, contrary to popular belief, people having higher iq in general have better talent for languages, same with understanding others emotions and using it to your advantage ("emotional intelligence").

As for reframing an issue and solving it in a different way. This may be valid approach (to teach people etc). But IQ is also time-measured. If your new approach does not help you to solve previously unseen problems quickly, it is not noticably increase your intelligence.

Thus, we see consistently that people cannot really prepare for iq tests much. You only get a few points more if you prepare. Same difference as if you are sleep-deprived.

  16. I had an LCD that worked from around 2005 to 2022. It became very yellow closer to 2022 for some reason. It was Samsung PVA, I think it was model 910T.
  17. I wonder if OP used "octets" because physical pattern in the CD used to represent a byte is a sequence of 17 pits and lands.

BTW, byte size during the history varied from 4 to 24 bit! Even now, based on interpretation, you can say 16 bit bytes do exist.

Char type can be 16 bit on some DSP systems.

I was curious, so I checked. Before this comment, I only knew about 7 bit bytes.

  18. I think this perfectly describes huge percentage of ADHD people. I always laugh when I am told: "But you don't sound so bad". Yeah, not sound so bad when I can be so deeply focused into something trivial like reading a blog, that I can miss a flight. And I KNOW I am that close of missing a flight, and still engage with something interesting right now, not something hugely critical to my life.
  19. Nah, you may be missing or may be not, but there no way ay to explain psychedelic feelings. Just not possible. Sometimes world changes to wonder full or curiosity, and you think why, or why I cannot live like that always. Extent of this is not possible to experience without psychedelics or other strong mind altering practises.
  20. Foxpro is alive and well in our town water utilities company. My fellow student still works on it. I don't know a worse way to waste your best years.
  21. I was tired of sound stuttering on windows in expedition 33, nothing helped. Installed bazzite, issue almost solved. Game works much better.
  22. You can also buy cells directly from china.

I found this store, which seems somewhat reliable https://hakadibattery.com/collections/sodium-ion-battery-cel...

  23. From my limited research, sodium batteries are somewhat commonly used in Chinese EV.
  24. Lithium has several much safer chemistries then we use in phones. LTO for example, or LiFePo4
  25. I've recently wondered, can you buy consumer sodium cells. Apparently, the only way is to order from china directly.

These seem to look more trustworthy (did not order yet) https://hakadibattery.com/collections/sodium-ion-battery-cel...

  26. I agree, but my mind only changed when I got to the company with good working conditions.

Until you have no decent work life balance, benefits and compensation, speaking of friendship and family looks like an sarcastic insult.

But to be true, most of my current friends are through work. Some are from hobbies or university, but nobody is from school.

  27. Makes you think that idea of spreading democracy is not just a cover for power struggles, but something really important
  28. I think your analogy is lacking. Human brain is much more efficient, so it is not right to say "giving a human team a week instead of five hours". Most likely, the whole OpenAI compute cannot match one brain in terms of connections and relations and computation power.
  29. Afaik it is very unlikely anything from mars can affect us in any way. All our bacteria and viruses have millions of years of coevolution.

Best example is how almost all cat and dog infections do not affect humans. And cats and dogs are mammals!
