  1. “Highering” should be “hiring”
  2. Why not between all of them?
  3. What’s wrong with looking outside? I’m at the point where I treat my phone like it’s radioactive, actively trying to limit each encounter with it. I think we should all be staring out the window more often.
  4. > I wish we had a democracy that could prevent this but we do not

Doesn't this rely on us as the individual? We get the government we allow. We, humanity, could've had anything we wanted, this is what we gave ourselves.

  5. Until we get money out of politics, we’re fucked.
  6. First line of the article: > Jensen Huang, the chief executive of Nvidia, is the 10th-richest person in the United States, worth $127 billion

I haven't been paying attention to the bullshit that is nth-richest person but how the fuck is someone worth that much and is only in 10th place? Wasn't it not too long ago that $127B would have been 1st?

  7. All this energy being burned to create shitty images, shitty music, and shitty videos that all amount to essentially shitty memes. I don’t understand how the singular focus isn’t on solving humanity’s problems.

We already have artists, we don’t have a cure for cancer or the climate crisis.

  8. This is great! I played nearly all the Sierra games when I was a kid and currently showing playing them with my wife. The CD talkie versions are much easier to play together though so this is perfect!
  9. If you’ve never lived in a major urban area in the US, I imagine this might seem strange. People drive around with music playing loud enough that a crappy mic would easily pick it up.
  10. That’s what bugs me about gen ai. How is it that all these resources are being used on recreating things that humans already do and not entirely focused on aging, health, and the climate?

We already have artists, we don’t have a cure for what we’ve done to the climate. It’s frustrating.

  11. It feels like America innovates and the EU regulates.

Personally I’d like to see each do more of the other. But would that hamper the thing they’re doing better at? If America regulates more will there necessarily be less innovation?

For example, there are a number of bills in the CA legislature aimed at regulating the gen ai. I know that if CA makes these things illegal, they’ll just move to jurisdiction where it’s not.

  12. God I miss adventure games. I played more hours of Sierra online than I could ever begin to count. Signed up and looking forward to updates!
  13. This is great! Really nice on the eyes and well organized. It did take me a while to figure out what to look for though - as others have mentioned. I had to find the actual link on the GitHub page then browse the homepage to understand what it was. When I saw it though, I really liked it.

I'd love to see this expanded to non-software engineers. Artists, for example, could also use this.

edit: I spoke too soon. I see that artists can use this as well. The icon gallery needs a couple more, like Soundcloud, but the basics are there for everyone. Great job!

  14. Just out of curiosity, what reason do you have to do that? Really curious to hear.
  15. I had hypertension for about 15 years and after quitting drinking and smoking no longer do. I still suffer from white cost hypertension regularly and frequently have to tell nurses to just press the button again - second time drops back to normal range with a drop of about 20/10.
  16. Why does it feel like we don’t have criminal responsibility (well, accountability) here in the US? So much criminal wrongdoing and the company just pays a fine and everything continues as usual.
  17. Will check it out. Personally been using aichat[0] for this.

It's interesting you say there's no need for a more complex language than bash something like this. Doesn't the need for jq/curl/perl argue the opposite?

  18. You weren’t kidding. Tried three times and all three were variations of the same[0].

  19. Isn’t this just a case of different tools for different jobs (or the right tool for the right job)? Rst clearly has some advantages for this use case but, at least for me, markdown is much faster and clearer to understand when jotting down my daily notes.
  20. I'm curious to know how far into the future we'd have to simulate to get meaningful data. Obviously it would matter how extreme the case is, using your example of eating sugar (I assume you meant only sugar) for a week, might quickly show us consequences but then how long would eating "healthy" need to run for?

Will that be the limiting factor in the future? I can hear it now, "I'm sorry, your insurance only allows for a 3 day simulation."

  21. Exactly, so many homes are designed with at least one room in the house to be tv-centric. Maybe new constructions can taken better advantage of these tvs. It would be fascinating if the same device that caused designs to center around itself then, now shift that design to something else.
  22. Not to be pedantic but doesn't Google technically own Microsoft's browser? I agree with you though, we've all been pushed to this point and I just wonder if there's any going back - and how?

I hate to say this but it feels like the more people got on the internet, the worse it got. Not their fault, but it's akin to a really good neighborhood market. It doesn't just attract honest shoppers but pickpockets and thieves too. Now we're all stuck in a crowded and increasingly crappy market wondering what happened to our beloved neighborhood hangout.

  23. Problem is, with every advance in worker productivity, workers either work the same or more. They may become more efficient, but the real benefit hardly goes to the worker - it goes to the organization. Whether that’s good, bad, or somewhere in between is another conversation and highly dependent on where you measure success in increased productivity.
  24. I never realized how many companies/brands have their own gTLD.
