  1. I love the idea of this... but here is what I want - IT SHOULD WORK WITH EVERY HARDWARE PERMUTATION KNOWN TO EXISTENCE. If not... combine your energy with Fedora.
  2. I’ve been waiting for this post.

I run OS 9 on my lamp iMac G4 but now I want to try 7.6.1!

  3. This looks like an advertisement for a new season of Severance or something.

The image on this page is wild: https://radiant.computer/principles/

Of course, I am intrigued by open architecture. Will they be able to solve graphic card issues though?

  4. Just in time for Halloween nightmares!!!!!!!!

Imagine being a kid and waking up to this sitting in your room, silently watching you sleep.

Imagine how terrified your dog is going to be of this thing, shuffling around or getting stuck with its foot on the edge of a rug.

Imagine finding it going through your underwear drawer when you come home from work early.

  5. I love this idea, and I imagine with years of successful lobbying efforts we could potentially get some laws passed to provide rights and clarity around our own data that could move us into this direction. But until then, while BlueSky is solid, I'll wait and see.
  6. It's usually something like this. But I guess for Ubuntu?

    https://wiki.debian.org/wl

Just note: anytime the kernel is updated, you need rerun these commands and rebuild the drivers for the new kernel.

  7. How difficult would it be just to switch to Swift for some of these apps?
  8. Same. I generally avoid Chrome-based browsers on all devices.
  9. I am not alone in this universe???
  10. We live in a complicated world, and we do need the freedom to get things right and wrong. Never easy though in times of crisis.

Silver lining in this is the conversation continued and will continue. I can see governments needing to try to get accurate and helpful information out in crisis - and needing to pressure or ask more of private companies to do that. But also like that we can reflect back and go - maybe that didn’t work like what we wanted or maybe it was heavy-handed.

In many governments, the government can do no wrong. There are no checks and balances.

The question is - should we still trust YouTube/Google? Is YouTube really some kind of champion of free speech? No. Is our current White House administration a champion of free speech? Hardly.

But hopefully we will still have a system that can have room for critique in the years to come.

  11. I need more evidence to believe this.
  12. I’ve been using other apps than Obsidian for notes and sharing, so this is nice to read and consider. But isn’t Obsidian an electron app or whatever? Electron has always seemed resource intensive and not native. JavaScript has never struck me as “secure”. Am I just out of touch?
  13. I want to tinker with this someday.
  14. Is it possible to run multiple instances of this, so I could join an irc server that I also spin up in another docker instance and then have a rousing conversation with myself???
  15. My first impressions? It's fine.

It will take a bit of getting used to, but there are some design elements that actually do make sense.

  16. One of the best reasons to come to Hacker News
  17. How do I make these patterns my iPad wallpaper? — asking for a friend
  18. I will say this - I've been an Apple fan for a long time, through some really dark times. And I have my issues with who Apple has become.

One of the nice things about the Apple Store though was not just realizing that no one else was going to sell their differently designed products better than they were and the need for well-organized, spacious, inviting stores that were a fun attraction on a visit to the mall -- they really improved their customer service process. It's nice to be able to schedule an appointment and talk to someone who walks you through options. I'm sure there is no 100% satisfaction, but I took my iPhone 13 Pro Max in for a battery replacement... and ultimately, they ended up giving me a new iPhone 13 Pro Max because the camera sensor didn't work after battery replacement. They were nice, apologetic, and communicated well throughout the whole process. I even ran into the customer service rep at a local pub and nearly bought him a beer because he was so helpful.

But with that said, I agree with this post - sometimes, there is simply satisfaction in doing things well, treating people with dignity and respect, even if it doesn't pad your bottom line. How do we get there? No idea. Perhaps by having these kinds of conversations?

  19. This is really great. The speed is great, and I've had issues with Mozilla PDF viewer recently. (Printing fails for some unknown reason.)

But I assumed it was also a standalone app? Could this be used as a standalone app in some fashion?

  20. A profoundly wise and great article.

My son is a big kid and is playing high school football. It was not on our radar, so we have begun to navigate these kinds of questions. Like - do you want to play at the next level? What do you even need to do if you would like to? But also the realization of how much money is made off of these kids and how cruel and unforgiving it can be.

  21. I am very intrigued as local, culturally specific wines/beers/fermentation speak so much to our creativity and community as human beings.

But thanks for the heads up about Nipah Virus! Wow!

  22. This is long overdue. Spending six weeks in prison for writing an op ed? Even if you think the op ed was dumb or awful, what society do we have if we can't have the freedom to be stupid or wrong about something? We live in dangerous times - it must stop.
  23. I am not working in the computer science field any more, but my experience working with computer systems in an environment like this helped me gain a lot of confidence as an individual. This is amazing work and deserves to be funded!
  24. This is all one really needs to program a huge hit game in 2025.

DOOM is essentially a text adventure but with fewer keywords.

  25. Hey, this is the step forward. I think there are going to remain some X11 only distributions down the line that target older machines that may struggle a little with Wayland. Although I wonder about all of that... Wayland doesn't seem overly resource hungry. I use Q4OS on an old Chromebook, and it's kind of great.
  26. Right here.

    We are in a crisis.

  27. This is an interesting read though I’m not an economist but even pick up that the author is wrong about some of these points. Still, I don’t think the author is an economist either. And a little harsh on US workers - but I know there are people really struggling in the US who need work and bring their problems with them.

What a mess this country is in.

  28. This is sick. I know Classilla, our last somewhat modern web browser, was having issues with SSL/TSL stuff at the end. Maybe this opens the door for some smart hero to revive it a bit.
  29. I'm here for this. Going to start building a first class competitor to Elder Scrolls Arena this weekend for my Mac SE/30. And do it better.
