  1. I'm torn on this.

Initially I agreed, just because so many other languages do it that way.

But if you ignore that and clean slate it, IMO, 1 based makes more sense. I feel like 0 based mainly gained foothold because of C's bastardization of arrays vs pointers and associated tricks. But most other languages don't even support that.

You can only see :len(x)-1 so many times before you realize how ridiculous it is.

  2. > I'm assuming here that you mean that Nagle's algorithm is on by default, i.e TCP_NODELAY is off by default.

Correct, I wrote that backwards, good callout.

RE: fingerprinting, I'd concede the point in a sufficiently lazy implementation. I'd fully expect the application layer to handle this, especially in cases where this matters.

  3. > The programs that need it are mostly the ones nobody is maintaining

Yes, as I mentioned, it should be kept around for this but off by default. Make it a sysctl param, done.

    > TCP_NODELAY can also make fingerprinting easier in various ways which is a reason to make it something you have to ask for

Only because it's on by default for no real reason. I'm saying the default should be off.

  4. At this point, this is an application level problem and not something the kernel should be silently doing for you IMO. An option for legacy systems or known problematic hosts fine, but off by default and probably not a per SOCKOPT.

Every modern language has buffers in their stdlib. Anyone writing character at a time to the wire lazily or unintentionally should fix their application.

  5. Agreed with this sentiment. The average American doesn't care about any of this. Why would they? You have someone working 40+ hours a week to just barely be able to afford a dumpy apartment, with no real prospects or signs of escape - tell them that the US may no longer be paying top dollar to import the smartest people around the globe and see what they care.

In order for all of this to work cleanly, you need the everyman taken care of and actually willing to participate and have hope for the future. Until then you'll just get a slew of likely underhanded populists, because they at least pretended to care.

  6. One thing both Robinhood and Revolut offer, which I wish was mandatory, is that they detect when on a phone call and their banking apps put a banner on the top warning they are not calling the user and to not give out any information.

A small gesture, but anything that can help I'm all for.

  7. This is fascinating.

My uncle was a pilot, and I asked him 15 years or so ago about the job. He was going on and on about computers and autopilot, claiming that pilots were only really needed anymore for takeoffs and landings, and they could sleep during the rest. Probably realizing the liability in what he said, he was quick to clarify that he didn't, of course.

In that short time span we now have a system that can land a plane by itself. Nothing less than magic, and huge congratulations and thanks to everyone at Garmin who made this happen.

  8. Yeah, I usually shy away from these threads because any hint of politicism drives tribalism and people assuming whatever I said is on the enemy side, whatever that is. I just wanted to get more informed thoughts and opinions.

In any event, thank you for the response and links.

  9. I've not been keeping up with the news lately though I'd heard about this in passing. Was this tipped off from prior investigations wrapping up finally, or the current federal gov's hatred of Walz and Omar?

I mainly ask because it makes me curious how much fraud exists in other states - basically are we picking on MN, or are they the exception?

  10. It's really contextual so... maybe? A good comment that just happens to do it once, likely not. But OP saw it multiple times in a short time from the same user, so probably.

Constant self promotion is what is hurting so many other platforms, I'd hate to see this one take even a step in that direction.

  11. Not a mod, but I do hope you flag comments like that. Dang is awesome, but it is user moderation that makes a giant difference.
  12. I have always disliked ads, but this has slowly grown into outright unreasonable anger as the years go. I just cancel anything I'm paying for that shows intrusive ads.

I was a little worried about cancelling Amazon Prime at first, but realized I didn't -really- need some JIXFOZ branded gadgets next day, after all.

I plead with everyone who feels similarly to vote with their feet/wallet. It's the only hope of getting out of this mess.

  13. Not OP... all I could come up with is they didn't remember US east vs east US, so landed on EU2 meaning 'east US 2.'
  14. Not for nothing, but I'm not sure that's a great metric. Venezuela for instance is 178, and it doesn't seem like an overly happy place to be these past few years.
  15. So if I have a vehicle with let's say 250 miles of range, you want me to let it get to 100 miles at least left to drive 100 miles to the charger, then drive 100 miles back, leaving me with 50 miles of range until I have to do it again?

I'm not really against electric anything, but not following the logic of the examples in this comment.

  16. I agree with this. I remember when Gnome 3 came out, there were a lot of legitimate complaints that were handwaved away by the developers as "doesn't work well on a mobile interface", despite Gnome having approximately zero install cases onto anything mobile. AFAICT that probably hasn't changed, all these years later.
  17. > Brightness and saturation will probably be maxed out but with a cheap TV, it looks more like "normal" on a more expensive model.

That probably mimics Samsung TVs, which are popular for that reason but look like crap.

The actual best TVs, picture wise, are among the LG C series, which are surprisingly dim and unsaturated. That said, mine has held up terribly so I won't buy another. My $200 Onn looks good enough to my eyes and lasted longer.

  18. I like this. I hope this thread fills with many more comments.

I think it's important to remember especially in traffic and such that cars aren't cars, they are people. I have no idea the real ratios, but imagine 20% are genuinely good people, 60% are just going about their lives, and 20% are miserable for some reason and drive like miserable people. It's easy to think everyone else is an idiot and become aggressive, but remember it's a small percentage who actually agitate you.

Now to answer the question. I guess it's when I was a kid, I'd completely torn my ACL but they wouldn't operate until I was done growing. I don't know how old, 12 maybe? I was in Washington DC running across a busy street when my knee slid out of place and I fell in the road. A Mercedes stopped, purposely blocking both lanes of traffic, and a husky middle aged black lady in scrubs got out and dragged me out of the road onto the sidewalk. She asked if I was ok, and I was as it happened here and there, and off she went. It was such a kind gesture in a city that seemed so cold and always on the go.

  19. Well I'm for one glad it did. Never heard of this book, but it sounds interesting enough (and not just because of the potato paragraphs) that I just ordered a copy.

    Thanks!

  20. Oh wow, I felt like I was reading my own kid's writing for a moment, as this is very much our situation. They get tired of hearing my long-winded tangents of potatoes being the ultimate food, and of course, my particular affection for mashed potatoes. I read once that humans can live on a diet of potatoes and milk, and I never bothered fact checking that despite me repeating it to them often - and asking guess what's made of potatoes and milk?

That aside, I'm guessing the author's aversion as a child is strictly texture based which is fair. Don't get me wrong, fresh prepared is better, but instant potatoes, especially the Idahoan brand, taste exactly the same to me. It's just that they're too perfectly thin and uniform, quite unnaturally so.
