  1. > Sergey Brin’s lesson for the rest of us

Is it? I know people who are really happy without doing much in their retirement. Probably because they weren't workaholics.

To my mind, if one doesn't have hobbies during the working years, then they will struggle to find purpose when they retite.

  2. I’m puzzled by the limited opposition from businesses regarding government attempts to access encrypted communications. Granting governments easy access—which inevitably leads to uncontrolled monitoring—compromises a company’s most valuable asset: its privacy. This would effectively hand over the keys to their operations, exposing them to security breaches, stifling growth potential, limiting access to competitive markets, and ultimately, jeopardizing company ownership. Corrupt officials could exploit this access to manipulate markets, facilitate insider trading, sabotage business plans, and even plant fabricated evidence within company communications and systems, leading to potential takeover and imprisonment of owners.

  6. > That's when I learned the difference between burnout and disillusionment. Burnout drains your body; disillusionment erases your purpose. You can recover from exhaustion with rest, but you need something else entirely to recover from meaninglessness.

This can be a life changing thought!

  7. If there's no meaningful reward or punishment for keeping or leaking PII, companies won't do anything about it. They'll keep collecting sensitive inf unless they're educated or forced not to collect unnecessary PII.

  10. > The copyright status of LLM-generated code is of concern to many developers; if LLM-generated code ends up being subject to somebody's copyright claim, accepting it into the kernel could set the project up for a future SCO-lawsuit scenario.

    Ain't that anticipatory obedience?

  12. My personal favorite feature of GrapheneOS is that we can toggle the network access permission. In the past, I'd have to root my phone just to be able to install a firewall to do the same. Big props to GrapheneOS!
  13. Revolut does work for me. They added support for GrapheneOS long time ago
  14. ITA looks like the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) to me. I like that. If all English text was written in this way it'd be really easy to learn (at least for me). It reads like a breeze.
  15. 99.99% of the time I use self-hosted instance of Searx-NG https://github.com/searxng/searxng You can easily co-host it with other apps on e.g. digitalocean for 4$ pcm. It's also highly customizable and your instance of Openweb UI can use it as search engine too.

  18. There's no such thing as Brazilian (language). They speak Portuguese, or Brazilian Portuguese to be exact. Word negro is used to describe black people, see https://pt.wiktionary.org/wiki/negro Preto is a synonym of negro also used for describing black people (it can bear a pejorative connotation or not. It depends on the context) but generally for things that are black. The pejorative connotation pertains to a black servant or a black slave: (racismo) serviçal residencial negro (racismo) escravo negro See the note on https://pt.wiktionary.org/wiki/preto "In meaning 1, when referring to a human being, it is sometimes considered pejorative, especially when said by a white person. However, there are groups of black people who claim the use of preto. For these people, preto is not only not offensive, but is the most appropriate term. The possibly offensive nature of this word must be analyzed by context."
