I make lots of things. You can reach me at satvik dot pendem at Gmail.
- satvikpendemSure, you can treat them differently, but for certain use cases and layouts, you can treat them the same. It all depends on what you're trying to do.
- Why are you asking me this? Are you trying to test whether I've actually used RDS before? I'm sure a quick search will find you the answer to your question.
- From actual eye tracking data via Hotjar and similar, people do skip around the page. Those that scan linearly are in the minority but probably are more highly represented on HN, just as a matter of course.
- Trusted in what sense, that they'll always work perfectly 100% of the time? No, therefore one must still check them from time to time, and it's really no different when self hosting, again, if you do it correctly.
- One thing I learned working in the industry, you have to check them when you're using AWS too.
- No, it's saving time because some things might work on one OS but not another, and then dealing with updates to each OS that might break something, or we need a new piece of software but it doesn't work on Windows for local development, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera. There are so many ways it goes wrong, I speak from personal experience.
- Isn't this just a JSX template engine? For anything interactive you still need JS on the frontend. And then you essentially recreate React Server Components.
- If we're talking about CLIs, check out Kamal, the build system that 37signals / Basecamp / DHH developed, specifically to move off the cloud. I think it uses Kubernetes but not positive, it might just be Docker.
- The screen is infinite but information should still be prioritized, that is why newspapers use different sizes of headings. If they truly wanted to jam everything in there, they'd use the same small font size and save on paper, but that's not what people like because they want to see at a glance what is important and what's not, and that's done by the font size initially. This is no different on an infinite screen, the design principle of information prioritization still holds.
- What is it with commenters in this thread and wanting to "reliably scan one line at a time?" When users use image galleries, they generally do jump around because they're looking at all the options on screen all at once. The eyes absorb everything and then they pinpoint what looks good. I've never seen or heard anyone go line by line in an image gallery or a newspaper layout and doing so I'd find to be highly abnormal to average users.
- Someone else said the same thing which I addressed here: https://www.hackerneue.com/item?id=46331586#46334242
TLDR: in the user's eyes, a newspaper and this sort of layout are not very different, if the average user can navigate the former for hundreds of years, they can navigate the latter.
- You can self host Supabase too.
- I wonder how well this plays with other self hosted open source PaaS, is it just a Docker container we can run I assume?
- Check out canine.sh, it's to Kubernetes what Coolify or Dokploy is to Docker, if you're familiar with self hosted open source PaaS.
- I can't tell if this is satire or not with the first sentence and the "0 users" parts of your comment, but I know several solo devs with millions of users who self host their database and apps as well.
- If you set it up right, you can automate all this as well by self hosting. There is really nothing special about automating backups or multi region fail over.
- This would be a strange scenario because why would you keep these people employed? If someone doesn't want to do the job required, including servicing Postgres, then they wouldn't be with me any longer, I'll find someone who does.
- Better yet, self host Postgres on your own open source PaaS with Coolify, Dokploy, or Canine, and then you can also self host all your apps on your VPS too. I use Dokploy but I'm looking into Canine, and I know many have used Coolify with great success.
- Ah yes, do-notation.
- It's not meant to be "efficient," it's meant to allow your eyes to look at the entire page at once to find what you're looking for. A newspaper or photo gallery comes to mind.
