  1. Got a direct link to the app? The play store search is just offering me the Tom Hanks movie about a dude stuck in an airport ...

Edit: found it using these instructions.

  2. A couple years ago a friend of mine mentioned that he had known another mutual friend of ours for many years, much longer than I would have guessed. I asked him "what does he do?" and he thought for a moment before saying "you know ... I have no idea, it has never come up".

Definitely one of his more interesting qualities.

  3. Related: if anyone has a method of achieving this query against GCP resources I'd be keen to learn that as well.
  4. Your website is a work of art. Bravo <3
  5. Absolutely _baffling_ piece of software. It's like if someone added vim keybindings to a TODO app, then switched the keyboard layout to COLEMAK, then removed all the UI controls.

I use it like once a quarter and trying to remember how to mark a task finished makes my eyes water.

  6. baq's comment is a joke about RAM prices.
  7. Ballsy for a founder to come right out and (roughly) say "yeah anyway fuck vendors" on the corporate blog. Points for honesty.
  8. Please point me to the nearest meat grinder. I'm jonesing for breakneck speed mayhem!
  9. I'll never forget installing ut2k4 on my linux box and having it Just Work. Magical.
  10. I just want to say that I love pico.sh <3
  11. The definition I liked best, which I _think_ came from one of the Google SRE books though I'm not certain, was: "SRE is what happens when you consider operations to be a software problem".
  12. In one of the myriad making of / behind the scenes docs I've watched over the years, they described how after the first set was built it was decided it should be more cramped, so they cut a horizontal swath out of big chunks of it and lowered the ceiling forcing the actors to crouch and duck as they moved around.

Fantastic decision, the claustrophobia really adds to the creep factor IMO.

  13. I am extremely Not A Database Person but I understand that the rationale for Kubernetes adopting etcd as its preferred data store was more about its distributed consistency features and less about query throughput. etcd is slower cause it's doing RAFT things and flushing stuff to disk.

Projects like kine allow K8s users to swap sqlite or postgres in place of etcd which (I assume, please correct me otherwise) would deliver better throughput since those backends don't need to perform consenus operations.

  14. For folks like myself, who don't know much about DB internals but know a bit about Kubernetes, this sounds very akin to the K8s API watch cache.

  15. It CAN cost nothing to give a take home, but this is not a requirement. At my previous employer any candidate that made it as far as the take home project was paid for the time they worked on it.
  16. I've been dreaming for years of some kind of "two ways to unlock your phone" mode.

Mode 1: I'm bored, show me something interesting, all notifications are available

Mode 2: I want to do something specific, don't show me anything but a tool for selecting an app / task (list of apps, search box, whatever).

  17. On top of that, text based communication for short attention spans is both brief and dehumanized, encouraging "dunking" behaviour. Hard to empathize with folks who have differing views when the discourse can broadly be described as "lol got'em!".
  18. This looks great, I really appreciate your response!
  19. Ooh! In that case I would love to hear about anything you've encountered in this arena that you found more appealing.
  20. "Facebook has done to our parents what they thought video games would do to us."
  21. I'll join sva_ with another book recomendation: How Emotions Are Made by Lisa Feldman Barrett. I am not an academic, but as far as I can tell she is a leading authority on the matter and the books is extremely accessible for the layperson.
  22. Like others I noticed this capability was interfered with in some way. I had fun getting it to speak to me in a cheesy over-the-top Bostonian accent early on, then one day when I tried to demonstrate for a friend it interrupted itself mid-sentence, literally one voice speaking over the other truncated voice, saying something like "I'm sorry I can't mimic voices".

It seemed like they had one model monitoring the output of another model and then cutting it off when it crossed some line.

  23. Anyone figure out what the colour scheme means?
  24. It looks like the core value prop is that it will publish documents which, for one reason or another, stop being available from the original source.
  25. What is this thing? IFTTT?
  26. holy fuck people will bet on pretty much anything I guess huh?
  27. Good timing. My local cinema just ran Gladiator a couple nights ago and I popped by, it still rocks.

And yes, that's what he scrapes off his arm right after being captured by slave traders.

  28. Cool! I haven't seen this feature. Does it add some nice features beyond what a compose file could offer?
