- Thanks for the reply.
In my case I worked on several side projects, i.e: https://itkdb.com and https://github.com/pedrohidalgo/pleasure
But the quality of my open source and side projects can't be compared to the quality of my daily job because of time and resources issues. So I still think that my portfolio as a backend developer won't be good enough because the awesome work is closed source and webapps are not accessible to the outside world.
When you say: "there is usually something they've done at work they can discuss" then you're not talking about portfolio.

- I did it twice. Both times I failed but I don't regret it. I felt very good when doing it. I lost savings but it was a good live experience.
On the second time I created this plugin: http://plugins.netbeans.org/plugin/61050/pleasure-play-frame... I tried to make a living of this, I only sold 5 licenses of 25 dollars per year and to develop this plugin took me 2 and a half months of hard work.
Didn't have a problem getting a new job both times.
