I'm a developer, reach me at pdenya[at]gmail. Always happy to hear from HN folks. Currently helping startups with PR as cofounder/CTO at PressFriendly - http://www.pressfriendly.com.

  1. I thought painting on copper sounded like a good argument. There were some good points made.
  2. https://www.amium.com/img/homepage/product-shot.png

Seems heavily inspired by / very similar to Slack though. A lot of features in common. Slack allows you to post and comment on files but doesn't support versioning yet.

Are you trying to be a Slack replacement with better file handling or is it meant to be used alongside apps like slack?

  3. The Hit List, a list app for OS X and iOS did this a while ago. I actually stopped using the app for years because of the fee but looking again now, the syncing service has been made free and is included with subscriptions!
  4. > Unfortunately, in the first 24 hours of coming online, a coordinated attack by a subset of people exploited a vulnerability in Tay.

I think it just didn't get a coordinated attack like this. I'd guess this type of attack needs to happen close to launch to be a high percentage of it's interactions to influence it so strongly.

  5. Doesn't seem like there's much value in linkedin premium for non-recruiters and the recruiters certainly aren't complaining about spammy practices.
  6. Same thing in SF, startups renting the bottom of duplexes.
  7. The key is the same size as the message. Each letter translates the corresponding letter and no others. You could make a key to translate the message to anything with the same number of letters.
  8. Changing the contents changes the hash and the hash is used in the url
  9. Bitbucket provides those. I use it professionally because I like all my stuff in one place and that's where I keep my free private repos.
  10. I do that whether or not I have a boss that cares. It's easy to feel judged by people walking behind you glancing at your screen. A little privacy is amazing.
  11. > This same lamp could simply have a wire between the carbon and zinc, with an on-off switch

Seems unlikely that there's no trade off to this, can anyone confirm? Also, it has an on-off switch.

  12. Sites require you to sign up but it won't matter much if someone gains access to your account on them. Those might as well share a password. Same with sites that share trust buckets like [goodreads, yelp], [facebook, twitter] etc.

In the real world though just memorize separate bank and email passes and use a password manager w/generated passwords for everything else.

  13. It's code notebooks, not an idea chart. It's evernote for programmers which is something a lot of people need since all the evernote-esque tools suck at handling code.

    > If you are using anything flashier you are wasting your time on the tool rather than the substance of what you are thinking.

I brainstorm at a keyboard fwiw. Different strokes.

  14. > There is no complex setting files require geek knowledge. You can access all your settings incl. syntax definitions and themes from a normal preferences window.

Who is this for? This is not a feature I want.

  15. It's a safe cracker calling the cops in this scenario. "I wanted to see what banks I could break into" is a much more reasonable defense in this situation seeing as he's alerting others to the intrusions when he clearly could have just kept quiet and stayed out of trouble.

Not that it says anything about whether he'll be in legal trouble. Laws are crazy.

  16. There's a privacy option to disable 3rd party app access (FB apps used by other people) to personal info so nothing as full featured is possible.
  17. In this case, no they didn't have pre-labeled location/setting available. You can see one of the datasets they used here: http://image-net.org/challenges/LSVRC/2013/#data.

Generally speaking, Neural Networks are black boxes. The layers interact with each other but not in a defined categorical manner like that. Layer size/depth are parameters you provide when setting up that have tradeoffs in result accuracy, space, time spent, etc like jpeg quality.

  18. This extension lets you easily hide page elements: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/page-eraser/ekofpc...

Not particularly easier than hiding the divs if you know how but good for everyone else.

  19. How does that justify a lower reward price even from a business perspective?
  20. My neighborhood is much less interesting than yours. We have someone stealing mail but no detectives yet.
  21. Premailer is amazing. Saves me a huge amount of trouble regularly. For one thing you can just remove the external stylesheet reference to see how it degrades instead of s/style=/ignorestyle=/g or similar.
  22. > Images by one of my heroes, the Ukrainian-American artist Boris Artzybasheff. You can find more of it here.

Agreed, very nice attribution. It wasn't added in response, I noticed it 8 hours ago (last night for me).

  23. I also misunderstood this

It's more like when a small group of people split a large powerball jackpot

    as

[A Black Swan is] more like when a small group of people split a large powerball jackpot
  24. This is a devops tool named Terraform, nothing to do with terraforming.
  25. If this was available convenience would trump security for many people.
  26. Those are $30 headphones and I _love_ them. I use headphones 10 hours a day and it's always the apple ones. So comfortable, just the right amount of noise-canceling so I don't have to remove them to talk to people, and they sound good to me.

Beats are also very comfortable. Not much is said on headphone comfort in reviews and comparisons but it's very important for me.

  27. Has there ever been big business in retrofitting cars? More likely a small number of hobbyists will retrofit and for the rest it'll gradually roll out from manufacturers. Cruise might be hoping for a partnership with Audi or something.
  28. > a text based online football game

What? Can you describe it differently? I have no concept of how this could be played.
