  1. Amazon lists it as book 3 of 3 in a series - do you need to have read the first two?
  2. Many fonts have a disambiguation option. Inter by default doesn't pass the I test - but it can be enabled.

    Google Flex Sans supports font-feature-settings: "zero" - but doesn't seem to support lower-case l, upper-case I disambiguation.

  3. I also spent quite a bit of time with some quite well known mastering engineers in a former career - many of them talked about the pressure to produce "loud" masters for CD, but how they were given much more creative freedom for vinyl releases.

Hearing the two masters side by side on some incredible speakers really gave me an appreciation for how different 'versions' of an album can transform the experience of the music.

  4. When they're in short supply can we name them Unobtranium?
  5. Through work I once got into conversation with the guy who did the re-mastering into 96kHz of the ABBA back catalogue. Up until that point CD re-releases of their material was apparently all converted from the cassette masters where they'd massively exaggerated the HF to compensate for the fact that cassette had a notoriously terrible HF response...
  6. I’ve been using on a personal side project - but found that LLMs seem to be permanently confused over how to interact with pocketbase - to the point where I’ve even tried creating a Claude Skill to try and reduce the confusion.

Wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience?

  7. On the music side, the current trend for vinyl has been a really great thing for my teenage kids. My eldest (who according to Spotify listens to about 130k mins of music a year) has really discovered an appreciation for the arc of an album when he has to spend the time loading up a disc.
  8. I sadly didn’t share that experience - I fed it my goodreads most recent - but it largely picked up on 2 or 3 series I’ve been slowly working my way through so that most of the recommendation list was ALL the other books in the series (and the spin-off series) so I didn’t really get anything useful…
  9. Anecdata point - I’ve been running for around 3-4 hours this morning constantly using Haiku and it hasn’t hit the limit - currently at 74% and it resets in 1.5 hours. I think it’s safe to say you get a fair bit more usage over Sonnet.

Still trying to judge the performance though - first impression is that it seems to make sudden approach changes for no real reason. For example - after compacting, the next task I gave it, it suddenly started trying to git commit after each task completion, did that for a while, then stopped again.

  10. As an M1 owner seriously tempted by the hardware, seriously put off by Tahoe…
  11. I’m also really interested in this - in fact it’s the first thing I went looking for in the announcement…
  12. I’ve regularly used prompts along the lines ‘please modify the UI tor x feature to look like the selected Figma frame’. It’s ideal for a designing developer who wants to be much more specific about the user experience.
  13. Maybe a naive question - but is it possible for an LLM to return only part of its system prompt but to claim it’s the full thing i.e give the illusion of transparency?
  14. I think Eleven Labs has essentially done that already with ElevenReader haven’t they?
  15. Ah - I live just a half mile from these fields. It’s one of the historical quirks of the city; lots of common land open to the public, grazed by cows.

Although there’s fencing on other boundaries of the grazing land it simply isn’t practical to fence off the river - and as someone who also rows on the river I usually see a cow in the water at least once a year, so it’ll be interesting to see if they work!

  16. I inherited an N&G Sibyl [1] plate camera from my father-in-law when he passed a few years ago. I’d love to be able to take a few pictures on it at some point - it’s such a beautiful piece of machinery.

  17. A friend recently put me on to Intervals (https://intervals.icu) for Garmin / Strava related data nerdery and I’ve enjoyed it very much. As a rower it was nice that you can construct reports that give rowing related metrics rather than just the usual cycle / run stuff.
  18. This makes me wonder - is there not a ‘Little Snitch’ equivalent for iOS?
  19. … except that Google took this as permission to make their previously optional AI bolt-on mandatory and hiked the price for every user in exactly the same way.

Complaining to their support was an utterly miserable fruitless exercise that has me wondering what alternatives there are to this madness for SMEs…

  20. Would be great if it was available in the UK too!
  21. It’s not just that I don’t really need the AI features - it’s also that I actively don’t want to participate in adding to Google’s AI training data.

We’ve been happy customers of Workspace for around 16 years - this feels like the straw to break the camel’s back.

Strongly hoping there’ll be enough pushback from nervous corporates about data security that they’ll reconsider.

  22. This documentary was on BBC4 a few years back about Jesse Dufton climbing the Old Man of Hoy as a blind climber:

Really inspiring watch if you can find the whole film somewhere.

  23. Just to add - same issue iPhone 12 - iOS 17.4.1
  24. Date pickers are generally a bad choice for things like birth date anyway - see: https://design-system.service.gov.uk/patterns/dates/
  25. Honorable mention for the always funny: https://lolmythesis.com/
  26. Interesting - I had this exact question and tried the search on the website to find the answer with no result :D

Would be great to have an FAQ for this type of common question
