- osullivjAlso UK style outsourcing eg Capita, Serco and recently Tata Consultancy Services fubaring JLRs infra.
- Sounds positively monastic, in the best way. Your magnum opus rendered as glorious coding codex is surely preordained. I'm reminded off Cyril Connolly's Pram in the Hallway. We are all prisoners of our brain chemistry.
- Cf GBP exit from the ERM inc Soros
- I saw that demoed at Notts Micro Computing Club in the early 80s. IIRC a Microwriter was used to drive input for an Acorn Electron.
- Yes, completely agree. LLMs instantiate Searle's Chinese Room argument; symbols alone have no meaning. And yes, I buy the Kripkenstein argument. The meaning is the use, and intersubjectivity is key. My fear is that the humans who should know the use are having their grasp on that use degraded by production and consumption of AI slop text. Understanding requires application, and AI slop is letting the lazy off that hook.
- I'm guessing Swiss Bank/UBS as a mate used to trade there and had a NeXT workstation and loved Wingz. Later I heard they were doing server side pricing work on Apple servers. I stand corrected; thanks!
- dbase II offered similar capabilities on 8 bit CPM workstation in the early 80s.
- Feyerabend: the only rule is "anything goes"
- Would be great to know which pubs have gluten free beer. I recently became gluten intolerant, and it's ended my 40 year beer career!
- I've said this myself as Java's reification of mid 90s OO and poor interop via JNI are not to my taste. But I've spent 25yrs in banking with JPMC, BoA, Barclays et al. Done lots of interop with Cobol on S/390, AS/400 and VME. Never heard of any of those systems being rewritten in Java. Have encountered key mainframe prod systems for which source is lost.
- So my imperfect understanding is they formalised Escher's shading tricks. And so systematised making the impossible look possible. Which is what magicians do by gaming our perceptual firmware. Which is the reverse of what we do when debugging a nasty corner case. The observed behaviours seem impossible, until our perception of possible causes realigns.
- If you want to learn to like country music, listen to Margo Price, not Garth Brooks.
- Yes, I believe the Internet is destroying the intersubjectivity humans require for socialisation.
- One consistent red flag I look for after the hire is a refusal to learn anything outside their own narrowly defined scope.
- I'm now a post kids greybeard; two nats, two steps, both flavours. Yes, girls under 10 are easier than boys. That flips on you in the teen years!
- Would love to hear Carmack's thoughts on render cost...
- Zachary's Showstopper book is a great account of Dave Cutler and WinNT.
- UK too, and concerned. I agree that amendment 1 and 2 provisions effectively underpin individual freedom in the US due to founder perspicacity. My fear re US constitutional provision is on separation of powers, and transfer of power. Fortunately Pence held to the constitution. Nobody ever willingly takes their hands of the levers of power!
- Written code is an auditable entity in regulated businesses, like banks. Fowler suggests we get more comfortable with uncertainty because other eng domains have developed good risk mgmt. Cart before horse. Other engineering domains strive to mitigate the irreducible uncertainty of the physical world. AI adds uncertainty to any system. And there are many applications where increased uncertainty will lead to an increase in human suffering.
- I leaned heavily on my own meta cognition recently when withdrawing from a bereavment benzo habit recently. The combo of flu symptoms, anxiety and hallucinations are fierce. I knew O was seeing things that were not real; light fittings turning into a rotating stained glass slideshow. So I'm totally on board with the visual model hypothesis. My own speculation is that audio perception is less predictive as audio structure persists deeper into my own DMT sessions than does vision, where perspective quickly collapses and vision becomes kaleidoscopic. Which may be a return to the vision we had as newborns. Maybe normal vision is only attained via socialisation?
