My blog in Brazilian Portuguese: http://www.mosquito.pro.br

  1. You forgot to mention what may be the most serious water problem in Brazil. Agribusiness invests heavily in the Cerrado, the Brazilian savanna. In the Cerrado originate the vast majority of Brazilian rivers, which supply water to almost all of Brazil. Its trees, with deep roots, retain the scarce water of the region. This entire region has been deforested for the production of soybeans and cattle ranching. Brazil is a great exporter of water, which it currently does in the form of meat, soybeans, coffee, and paper.

Today we are experiencing unprecedented droughts in the region. In the future, we will pay a much higher price.

  2. Funny that in science fiction robotic voices were always the ones without adverbs and adjectives
  3. I’ve always thought volunteer firefighters are one of the coolest parts of American life. Neighbors stepping up to protect each other and their communities, even putting themselves in danger sometimes. That kind of teamwork and courage is what really makes a country strong.
  4. The unchecked oligarchy just buy the government.
  5. When we read about historical facts, I am always impressed by how entire societies do terrible things. I always thought it was ignorance or information censorship. Nowadays, I see intelligent people working for these big techs here on Hacker News. They are people I admire and who are very well-informed. I then realize how we are not free from the most terrible moments in history.
  6. Where are American anti-trust instituitions?
  7. There conference had interesting lectures. Will they be posted online?
  8. There are other cases:

Bush issued penalties for Brazilian judges that condemned corrupt ex president Bolsonaro

USA also stole Russian assets (as did before with Cuba and Venezuela)

  9. It's just me or this article looks like propaganda? A traditional advertising nice is to plant news attacking your adversaries. This empty article looks like just part of the advertising machine of new Google model release.
  10. My favorite AI feature is to put a YouTube link in Gemini and ask it to summarize. Or even better: put the link of a 20min video "5 ways to" and ask "what are the 5 ways?"

I think Gemini analyzes the transcription.

Can I do the same for free with Qwen3?

  11. I'm impressed how USA companies became untrustful. Maybe this comes since Snowden whistle blowing, but it looks like the tendency is accelerating.
  12. The phrase below is worth the read:

    > giving creative workers more rights without addressing their market power is like giving your bullied kid more lunch money. There isn't an amount of lunch money you can give that kid that will buy them lunch – you're just enriching the bullies

  13. In my third world big city, a lot of people sleeping in the streets are the ones who don't have money to pay public transport for their far way homes. The jobs are downtown. It's perverse.
  14. They don't need to hire anyone. They just prompted Claude to write for them. :-)
  15. Leaning in the "China Menace" will also give you points with the USA Gov.

I can see that they can detect an attack using their tools, but tracing it to an organization "sponsored" by the Chinese government looks like bullshit marketing. How they did it? A Google search? I have the Chinese Gov in higher grounds. They wouldn't be easily detected by a startup without experience in infosec.

  16. Of it can read ancient handwriting, it will be a revolution for historians work.

My wife is a historian and she is trained to recognize old handwriting. When we go to museums she"translates" the texts for the family

  17. I use glasses. Can I use it?
  18. Kdiff3 used to be great. Had a stable and outdated interface.

Now that they updated the interface I've had problems. Ch l crashes and difficulty to install as non admin.

  19. I'm speechless
  20. Do you have any good recommendations about recent software development research?

Till today I still share with my coworkers this 15yo article from Microsoft Research:
