  1. Earnestly, what's the concern here? People complain about open source being mostly beneficial to megacorps, if that's the main change (idk I haven't looked too closely) then that's pretty good, no?
  2. False dichotomy, just advertise based on the content of the site without spying on people
  3. Disagree wrt practicing gratitude towards resources consumed and tools utilized. Maybe it doesn't degrade you if you don't but I think it gives a bit more perspective
  4. Huh, didn't know there were enough people to perpetuate a model like that just for lost pets. I had thought of this a while back and figured that would be a no-go

I was thinking it might help if they opened up the premise a bit, just made it about collecting pictures of animals, maybe tagging them as being a stray or having a collar but being alone, that it might increase the engagement for something like this.

Also +1 on the android point

  5. Car, insurance, medical bills, student debt, at a guess?
  6. Wasn't using an iconic voice but it does seem to be voice specific, good call
  7. For sure, I saw where it was skipping and I wouldn't have been surprised if it were intentional, but good to disprove. Thanks for checking, have a good day
  8. Damn, tried a unicornriot article [1] and it just skipped several paragraphs past the grisly stuff.

    Can anyone else confirm?

  9. Most people are in survival mode, and it's a socially vulnerable thing to admit you don't like the work. It requires a level of safety, by being honest about it and supportive of others hopefully we can get to the point where we can collectively acknowledge them and maybe try to address them.

It's also just not fun to think about why life sucks, and it makes life a little harder to begin with I think. So it requires some tact. People bringing it up as a subjective and personal take that they just want to share, as opposed to an objective fact that needs to change, has made it easier for me to take others more seriously in this area.

Sorry you felt like the minority, hope you can get to/create an environment where you feel better understood.

  10. Comment was in response to going from 3 to 2 jobs
  11. Good username for this kind of talk...
  12. I looked into it briefly but Im still not sure why the aussies are chasing this so vehemently
  13. I don't really care about grammar so long as the point is communicated. Some people are trying to write in a non-native language, or just need a bit of help. Whatever tooling that helps improve communication is great, I think the content is more important than the language used to communicate it.

Also your point could be made equally well about people using spellcheck.

  14. EA owned developer*
  15. Good to note it uses webgpu, so no mobile, and only nightly firefox. Sounds like a cool idea though, I'll check it out at some point.
  16. Rubber ducking is worth a lot, and have the Meditations vaguely quoted back at you seems like it would help out on occasion.
  17. I'm pretty sure we often see the abstract posted as a comment for a quick summary, and I don't see it downvoted as hard. Not everyone goes through the link.

But sure, they could have just posted that instead of going through GPT. Doesn't really matter much imo.

  18. Cool, good to hear. Seems like people do make friends in the space, and there is obviously a lot of cooperation involved in getting a change into a shared codebase.

Still wondering about what the actual community aspect of it looks like, beyond individual issues. Probably the best way to find out is to contribute ;)

  19. Working alone for 12 months seems kind of rough to me. It being whatever you want to work on is nice, but I don't think I would find it as fulfilling as just finding a new job where I can actually work with a team.

I also haven't worked on open source, not really, I could imagine there being communities that would make it significantly nicer to work on.

  20. Netherlands too, even in my smaller city, I know of one that has a pretty serious space thanks to some grants.

But as others said, libraries can also fulfill the same function. I went to Zwolle recently and saw that they even seem to have a regular volunteer repair cafe. Thought that was super cool

  21. Similar experience, good job on the change
  22. More context please, you're alluding and I would genuinely appreciate it if you have it. If you don't I don't think this is a good comment to make
  23. Naturally, there's an adversarial game playing out, and we accelerate it massively. If the results of our small games enter the larger playspace, we're damned, so I get your concern.

Is there some scifi solution to step outside of the game? Are the problems involved in understanding the systems involved (to the extent that you can predict realistic risk and mitigate) solvable?

I don't know the level of realistic risk for a devastating virus naturally occurring, nor the potential for us to address it without this kind of research, so I don't know what is within reason here. It would be cool to see any studies that attempt to address these two questions.

Edit: And a systematic review of past and considered lab leak scenarios probably wouldn't hurt either. If we still have to do this work, and just decide it must be done by isolated monks/robots in space, for humanity ending risks I guess that's worth discussing
