I can juggle and solve Rubiks cubes, but not at the same time.

  1. Thanks for posting that; as soon as I saw the title here I was going to look that up if no one else had already. Sabine Hossenfelder too, though there's far too much content from her on this to put a list, but anyone interested might like some of her takes.

A few debates between Brian and other notables; Hossenfelder, Eric Weinstein, and Roger Penrose to name a few; have popped up in my youtube feed lately which are typically also engaging.

  2. Same here; I've gotten a lot of utility from Udemy. Actually kind of got me a job (tbf, the manager I'd known for years and he'd've hired me regardless, but I was able to actually DO the job he wanted me to do basically day 0, even when he was willing to hire me and let me learn as I went).

There's some crap there; I've returned a couple courses not to my liking, but by and large I've been happy with them.

  3. For anyone following this thread, that link goes to a download itself rather than a page where you choose whether or not to download.
  4. I was in Switzerland on holiday and noticed some of these. Pretty fun, non-destructive and interesting.
  5. Very location dependent. Within the same metro area in one place we lived Lowes was better; in another less than 20 miles away, HD is.

But for actual help and humanity (if you can afford the price and the more limited selection), Ace is consistently better near where I am.

  6. You are correct, my apologies. It was at work where we have NannyWare of various sorts, so it might have been that. Working fine from home; thanks for confirming.
  7. <tangent>

What is it with a number of blogs recently that have turned off normal right-click behavior, and probably related, the scroll behavior is awful.

This is one, and as soon as I scroll on my work high powered Macbook and it's not smooth, I'm out.

  8. Related: Comments saying "this feels like AI". It's this generation's "Looks shopped" and of zero value, IMO.
  9. After an interview with Cory Doctorow I saw recently, I'm going to stop anthropomorphizing these things by calling them "hallucinations". They're computers, so these incidents are just simply Errors.
  10. I think all societies do this; this is just being human. All human groups migrate to whatever metric or rewards are provided.
  11. If I'm reading it right, the if condition/predicate can check more things than @media() can.
  12. > No doubt about the last part, but how does merging two giants create "More Choice"?

This is performative marketing for the regulators to allow the merger. No one (including the regulators) believes this, and it won't come to pass. ("More choice" won't, I mean, the merger will and a lot of regulators and politicians involved will end up with new cars, boats, and kids' college tuitions paid.)

  13. You CAN tell the team it's raining and details of the weather without letting them get overly wet.

    There's middle ground here.

  14. > it starts with a straw man argument ...

Perhaps they have, but there are also no shortage of middle managers that are adequately described by it. I worked for one for a few years.

  15. > The funny thing is the number of people who confuse Java and JS.

Is it? My experience in the past decade is that there are more memes about people who confuse the 2 than people that confuse the 2.

  16. > until the actual line of code is run...

Which is what the Ruby test-heavy culture is all about. I prefer types for this very reason; the compiler/checker is a complete suite of testing I don't have to write.

  17. Unless part of your compensation or even your company's policy to allow to keep working there is tied to it.

And just up and changing companies is also not a realistic option for many, before people start bleating that tired, privileged trope.
