  1. Could you summarize this into an argument of your own?
  2. That's not what he said or implied, he's merely responding to your argument 'Donating any amount of money to prevent people you don't know from marrying each other'. I think you might have a justifiable argument here, but it's not clear at all to me what it is.
  3. It's basic tolerance, it's not that hard. You do your job and collect your paycheck at the end of the week, same as everyone else.
  4. This argument seems to be a) intentionally provocative and intending only really to ruffle feathers, not actually put a coherent argument forward

And b) about on par with saying "water is evil" because if you drink too much of it you'll die.

  5. I've had recurring headaches my entire life. Have been to many neurologists, none have any idea what causes them, they just give me different pills to prevent them instead. This isn't unusual for headaches, quite often the cause is basically unknown. (If you ask people they'll give you a series of common things, eg water consumption, eating enough, etc, but it's just all unprovable folk medicine) Expecting everyone to "find the cause" is unreasonable.

If you have a headache, it's totally fine to take a painkiller. (If it happens on a regular basis, eg at least once a week, it can be a good idea to get those different pills from a neurologist, because the two main painkillers have bad side effects in the long run, but those different pills are just "masking" it in a different way)

  6. Isn't that exactly what these sort of things are about?

No one is inspired (which is usually the point of the factoids) by "this person made marginal contributions to the field for 30 years and then retired".

  7. In Atlanta suburb, I've never seen one, only normal looking vans.
  8. But there's literally a child-safe mode, which was not activated. (I don't know the details of this mode, I know nothing other than what was told to me in the article, so it's possible that kids mode is worthless. But obviously activating that is step 1)

This seems equivalent to me to taking the training wheels off a bike and then complaining when your child gets hurt.

  9. Are you saying that all products must be safe for children?

It's not cool to chop off a 13-year-old's arm, but a chainsaw will do that all the same.

  10. I mean, yeah, it's not great even for a regular non-child-mode. But then that has nothing to do with anyone's age, it's just 'send me nudes' isn't a good continuation of the conversation.
  11. ""I would think that there would be a warning or something that would pop up that would say, you know, 'Are you 13-plus?'""

Is that not what kids mode is for?

  12. As a us person, I don't even know what deaf-mute means? (Is it deaf and mute? Like Helen Keller?) I've literally never heard the word used in my life.

But I'm sure basically any word has been used as an insult in some context, that doesn't mean it's useful to consider all such usage as such.

  13. I swear I went home from work but then got fired from my job for falling asleep at my desk. I don't understand what happened. (And even if I did fall asleep at my desk, who fires an employee for falling asleep once?)
  14. Pypy's tracing JIT has worked pretty well for years, so that doesn't seem universal. I admit I have fairly low expectations on a JIT succeeding (in any meaningful fashion) in cpython given the constraints that it currently has, but I'm generally a skeptic, so maybe i'm being overly pessimistic.
  15. "The same way that a speed limit, age of consent, or drinking age doesn't get reduced to nobody can drive, have sex, or drink."

I really don't understand your logic here. Are you not saying "Steam shouldn't be allowed to sell pornographic games to adults"? Or are you saying it's ok for steam to sell them to adults, but not children? (But that was already the case, even before all of this). If you are saying "steam shouldn't sell pornographic games", how is that like any of the things you said?

  16. What is your justification for this position? How does this not reduce to "steam shouldn't sell games that aren't fit for toddlers"?
  17. This sounds like "you shouldn't suggest that long COVID is psychosomatic because doing so makes me or others feel bad" to me. Which part of what you're saying am I misunderstanding?
  18. Yeah, that position makes sense.
  19. Why? Are you saying we should only do waste reduction if it's expensive?

"Should" here is doing a lot of work, it makes the argument circular imo.
