These are some legendary American companies whose service made life more convenient, however I never felt they were earth shattering in the way other American inventions like the plane, the Internet, the mircochip, nuclear power, the light-bulb and the laser have been. Not to mention the personal computer and the smartphone that were also invented in America. I always thought the aforementioned inventions carried more heft. AI seems to me to be the only advancement on the same level of importance today.

- I suspect a lot of people do. Probably a massive number. They just silently derive utility out of it. Those who hate it are probably more vocal.

- In this kind of analysis it is always something that is done to or for China. The latter never has any kind of agency. Neither the will nor mind of its own. If that were true China would have stayed a complete and utter shithole no matter the investment whether political, intellectual, financial or scientific.
- So far all the headlines focus only on developers and other adjacent knowledge workers. Not enough fear porn. I think the range of everyone replaceable should be expanded. AI will start mining its own rare earths, pumping its own oil and generating its own electricity needs soon. Right up until it invents perpetual motion at which point everyone will be royally fucked or wont ever have to work again.

- I read Understand by him a really long time ago. I thought it was really good. However at the time I didnt understand the motivation of one of the main characters in it and the ending felt unjustified because of that. Years ago someone posted The Merchant and the Alchemist's Gate (pdf) by him on here. That one was a trip. He nailed the atmosphere and cadence of One Thousand and One Nights with a time travel story superimposed on top of it. Or it least that's how I remember it. Thought it was very Sufi in how it was told.

Oh wow. I dont think BeiDou Nav Sat System, HarmonyOS, Loongson&Zhaoxin CPUs, high speed Maglev trains (that use homegrown proprietary tech/design/material/engineering), Jinhdong warehouses etc are stolen.
Obviously, there is an argument to be made for how all of the above is based on papers and prototypes that originate in the west. However the same argument also applies to a lot of tech that originates in, say, the US. For example, the US Internet grew out of British packet switching theory(Donald Davies), GPUs rely on parallel computing theories from Japan and Europe etc.
- Public libraries provide free parking, A/C, a safe place to chill, outlets for charging electronics, drinking water, restrooms, wi-fi, help with employment, help with homeless services, translation services...Basically a lifeline for the homeless who can appreciate that.
