  1. TIL I have a "open Hacker News" hand reflex
  2. Sorry, I meant 10**50; HN formatting removed one asterisk
  3. This position has been closed
  4. Yes (ᵕ—ᴗ—)
  5. To add to this, the low-level constraints also make this assumption noisy, no matter how smart the compiler is. On the CPython case, if you do `dis.dis('DAY = 24 * 60 * 60)` you will see that constant folding nicely converts it to `LOAD_CONST 86400`. However, if you try `dis.dis('ATOMS_IN_THE_WORLD = 10*50')` you will get LOAD_CONST 10, LOAD_CONST 50, BINARY_OP **.
  6. It looks AI-assisted, based on these two commits: * https://github.com/neberej/exposedbydefault/commit/503bd6519... * https://github.com/neberej/exposedbydefault/commit/16693ba17...

But to what extent should we care for such a small website? The AI witch hunt won't get us too far, and this new way of producing is only getting started. The loss of control to a non-deterministic black box is worrysome, but at some point non-vibe coded (hard coded? brain coded?) software might become less error-prone that vibe-coded

  7. Same! The current self-hosted runner gets hung every so often
  8. Things like OpenAPI have existed for 15 years now and they also offer standarization.

The value on MCP is not on its features or innovation, but on the rate of adoption it has had. Companies have now an incentive to open, document and standarize their APIs to enable this new distribution channel.

  9. ? This has nothing to do with star imports
  10. This is great for building modules. One can now lazy import all interesting names on __init__.py, so that instead of having to remember `from module.some_submodule_that_you_need_to_remember import method` you can just do `from module import name`.
  11. Guess you have NASSO now (Not A Single Sign On)
  12. A good-enough compromise is a dual boot with a tiny Windows partition for the rare cases
  13. As an indie music composer, this kind of unusual tone arrangement is great for creativity, thanks! I noticed that the same triangle will play different chords from time to time, is that on purpose?
  14. That's brilliant. Now I need its compressing counterpart.
  15. The bothering part is the browser factor form. Why not just an extension?
  16. Plus, all GPC extensions advertised by the offical GPC pack other unsolicited privacy features and freemium models. I ended up building an extension https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/gpc-enabler/ilknagn...
  17. I guess to avoid having to install such dedicated programs for you and everyone you give access to, or just to have fun coding some little web project
  18. > In Spain and Portugal, the word for @ is "arroba", a term related to amphora that is also a standard unit of weight and measure.

It is in fact still used in certain contexts. For deciding when to slaughter the Iberian pig after feeding it exclusively with acorns in the open, it must weight 9 to 10 @s (an @ is 11.5kg, so 103.5 to 115kg)

  19. The fundamental limitation of LLMs is that they represent knowledge as parametric curves, and their generalization is merely interpolation of those curves. This can only ever produce results that correlate with facts (training data), not ones that are causally derived from them, which makes hallucinations inevitable. Same as with human memory.
  20. We where using Podman for certain deployments to AWS recently. However, it was in an EC2 instance and the overhead was unnecesary, so we ended up pasting Bocker[1] to AI, and stripping it of anything unnecesary until leaving just the few isolation features we needed.

    [1] https://github.com/p8952/bocker/tree/master

  21. That's just a first step, your muscle memory to open youtube.com for instant gratification requires time and motivation to go away. But the extra effort of having to disable an extension to fall into patterns you decidedly wanted to end is maybe enough to get you going.
  22. If the lane is frequent enough, a 2-3 minutes delay is fine. In many European cities the schedule is not specific times but frequencies per time of the day.

Like "from 7AM to 11AM, one bus every 8 minutes". Then you have the bus app if you want to optimize further (and if you're me, miss it because of being too tight)

  23. In Spain most city roads with 2+ lanes per direction have a dedicated bus lane, yet you still get bus bunching and spacing adjustments anyways.

    - Imagine bus A is followed by bus B, it's 5PM and people are leaving work simultaneously

    - Bus A spends a lot of time on each stop picking passengers up

    - When bus B arrives, fewer people are waiting and it tends to take less time

    - Eventually, bus B catches up to bus A so A must skip stops to maintain proper spacing

As for why this doesn't annoy people: if both buses are already close together, any ETA changes from spacing adjustments are minimal, and bus A will show no destination on the front display, so no false expectations are created.

  24. Same, I am a 13 mini user and will probably stay this way until there is a realistic alternative. It's obnoxious that there isn't a single phone on the market where you can reach the top corner with one hand.
  25. > I’m convinced most meetings are to make up for poor writing skills

I'd say poor reading skills are even more of a problem

  26. Love the idea, silly as it is! What came before, the app idea or the pun?
  27. Now that you can build such an app with AI in under 20 minutes with a manageable codebase you can properly understand and control, I don't think that's a good excuse anymore
  28. Love that term and gonna adopt it! My default tai;dr response to colleagues is asking AI to write a response for me, and paste it back without reading
