  1. Increasing supply would see your property value rise astronomically. Suddenly there would be developers wanting to build a 30 storey building in place of your single family unit. The ROI on that 30 storey would be high enough for them to give you multiple millions of dollars for your land. What would decrease is the beauty of the neighborhood, but people can be taught to appreciate the beauty of highrise buildings
  2. Looks like they sold right before the end. Wonder whether the AI deals they've struck make up for the difference
  3. Color me shocked that libsoftiktok is an actual US account. I was certain it was a foreign operative
  4. Now that network effects and data lock-in have taken root, downtime is not as big of a concern as it was in the 2000s
  5. Any solution that starts with "if we can all..." is no solution at all
  6. Two big leaps in your answer: 1. that the person paying more is rich and 2. that the person paying more likely doesn't care about the band

The way I see it, it is also highly likely that the person paying more is of average income and just convinced themselves to pay more because they are superfans

  7. I'm also black and growing up I had the impression that "woke" referred to left-leaning conspiracy theorists and activists. 9/11 truthers and gay rights activists were the main woke groups of the Bush era
  8. What you are talking of is only possible in companies where the founder didn't take VC investment. Once you take VC money, you get on the treadmill of infinite growth to satisfy investors. That makes companies do strange things in pursuit of this impossible goal. Like hiring for the sake of showing growth in headcount, hiring people to branch into unrelated verticals, hiring people with big resumes just to say you have them on the team etc
  9. One thing I've come to realize is that the larger your social circle, the more prone you are to comparisons and hence lifestyle creep. You can see this where the careers that involve a lot of socializing (sales, entertainment, law, finance etc) are known for having flashy people. And the careers that you can do as a loner (programming, quant, researcher etc) are known for having miserly folk
  10. And it's also bad for business. I think people on either side of the aisle underestimate just how tilted the other side can get when you go against them
  11. You're on it right now. HN is a very old site with old users and old mods that links to other old sites
  12. The reality is that people constantly vote for well-intentioned, empathetic interventions that have adverse economic effects in the long run
  13. They were great until they put fast downloads behind a paywall. It's like they're going out of their way to throttle download speeds nowadays
  14. It's the same with TikTok. If you search literally anything, some absurdly curvy, skimpily dressed woman will be part of the search results. Weird because I thought adult creators would be the first to be censored once social media platforms got to the profit maximization stage. G rated content is the biggest revenue multiplier in the media business
  15. If someone spends just one day on a video production set at any level, they will never pirate media again.
  16. Actually Patreon has played it perfectly by offering an android app, ios app and a website, and increasing the prices on the ios app to cater for the fees. The next thing should be to provide a clear notice on the ios app that lower prices can be found on the other apps. Then they will be able to objectively tell how many people value the app store's value additions enough to pay extra
  17. It's no longer a competitive market. MS can lowball like crazy now
  18. Clearly there is a preferred age group amongst the electorate, so the open market solved this problem
  19. He's clearly trying to follow the photopea playbook and make money through ads
  20. They were ex-Ivy league and friends from college. They fit into the current investor meta perfectly
  21. The high Healthcare costs in the US are caused mostly by high physician salaries though, and that's probably highly correlated with why they are able to make all these breakthroughs
  22. That and acquisition of a direct competitor who has beat a larger company. If you lose a competition, you should fall behind. Losing a competition and then forking out cash to make the leader switch teams before he crosses the finish line is a complete perversion of the game
  23. Are we also going to go ban Fortnite and Unreal Engine for producing mindless entertainment from China?
  24. Asset seizure over data that mainly contains mindless entertainment? This is a new low for the US as a business environment in my opinion.
  25. For browser bundling, Chrome has beaten Edge out handily, so there's no case there. For Office bundling, they charge separately for it, so there's no real case their either
  26. Google has a huge incentive to compete because Apple has 50% of the US market, which is the most consequential market in the world
  27. Takes like this miss the forest for the trees. The overall point is that automated programming is now a target, just like automating assembly lines became a target back in the day. There will be kinks in the beginning, but once the target is set, there will be a huge incentive to work out the kinks to the point of near full automation
  28. As someone who had also grown to automatically ignore .tk domains, perhaps we've lost a reliable spam signal and honeypot
  29. The way I see it, LLMs have taken one mode of thinking, which is educated guessing, and ramped it up to superhuman levels. Same way Deep Blue took rote memorization and ramped it up to superhuman levels. I think the true AI would come from digitizing all the different modes of thinking, then somehow bringing them all together into one superintelligence
  30. If you bend over and pay in such circumstances, you are part of the problem. Twilio tried to pull this crap on me and I simply created another account with an email forwarder and left them holding the bag on the previous account
