  1. I have some tor books, but I used to download them as .azw even though they had the "this book is drm free ..." blurb at the beginning. (was back before amazon stopped downloads)

Now they could actually be distributed as unencrypted .epub

  2. same here.

I've also purchased some books that are available as serials on the web for free.

I would imagine those publishers would be aligned with making them .epub

  3. I wonder if the AMD am4 and am5 stuff has issues like this?
  4. > But only if the author/publisher explicitly go in and permit it.

actually, many kindle books I have from years ago mention they have no drm at the request of the publisher.

...yet were distributed in DRM .azw format

  5. they are tarnishing their brand.
  6. I remember many (many!) years ago, when some american express travelers checks were counterfeited.

They did The Right Thing™ which was to honor them, so that their reputation and brand were preserved.

lots of other examples, like new coke fiasco, the poisoned tylenol, etc...

  7. I think government is the only way to regulate below pain threshold nonsense that weighs down society.

but I think small issues in society might translate to small issues for government action, and regulatory capture has a super-high roi overturning "minor" stuff.

I suspect only showing real harm for something is the only way to get these things high-enough priority for action.

I kind of wonder if the pager attacks, or the phone nonsense in ukraine/russia might make privacy a priority?

  8. I worry about the new cellular standards that support large scale iot.

Search for 5g miot or 5g massive iot or maybe even 5g redcap

  9. Next thing you know, they'll cover the outside of the prime 2-day shipping packages in ads.
  10. more annoying is that they prevented the software from being configured to configure the registry to not be theirs.

To the point that redhat created podman that can do what you want.

  11. > I'd focus on privacy.

I would love that. that said, right now firefox unstoppably and constantly phones home

  12. correct. free software doesn't place any restriction on the USE of software. The rights go to the user.

The restriction is on the redistribution of the software - the same rights must be passed on when redistributing it.

this license places (complicated) restrictions on how the software is used.

  13. sort of reminds me of zippy the pinhead
  14. it seems gas in vancouver (canada) is $4.50usd/gal ($1.18usd/liter)

that said, I'll bet the new one will be interesting for them, as I'll bet the gas motor can be used as an on-site generator which they might buy anyway.

  15. I wonder about the specs though.

I recall the bmw serial hybrid was called a range extender, because the gas motor couldn't actually put out enough energy to drive the vehicle on the freeway.

So basically it was an EV with a small +xx mile extra range from the gas engine.

so no "ice for road trips", more like "ice for an additional +xx miles" then you need to recharge.

In comparison the chevy volt had a better hybrid design (not a serial hybrid) and you could drive it on gasoline only.

  16. a chicken is an egg's way of producing more eggs.
  17. i got a blank page
  18. I don't have dyslexia, but I think reading apps could help with all this stuff, and it would help others too.

Basically allowing advanced typography could help so many people with visual problems.

    for example, allow adjustment of:

    - spacing between characters

    - spacing between words

    - spacing between lines (giant spaces might help you)

    - sizes of margins/gutters (whitespace that defines column width/height)

    - more character color and background choices (night mode helps me)

    - your own fonts

When amazon stopped allowing download of kindle books, I couldn't convert to epub and my reading took a nosedive. I use the kindle app for reading now and it is very limited in adjustability which makes reading harder for me.
