  5. This is a great way to learn!

Look into Proxmox(https://www.proxmox.com/) for setting up your own ec2 like VM platform. This makes it pretty easy to experiment with setting up and running different services on the same box in an isolated way. Practice things like setting up a VM with a GPU passthrough and then running gpu enabled docker containers on the VM.

Also look into getting a Hetzner server and setting up site to site Wireguard.

FWIW you don't really need to buy a mini pc. You will learn more by doing a build. The great thing about doing something like this is that you can get old data center parts for cheap. Ex: pickup a server motherboard (maybe a SUPERMICRO X9DRI-F), CPUs, and RAM on ebay for < $300. Then put everything into a used server case with a new PSU and you can do everything for $500 or $600. This setup will have more resources then any off the shelf thing you can buy.

  12. This is my worry.
  13. The assumption here is that you need to continue to access Reddit to train models.

The RefinedWeb / Falcon model has proven this is not true.

  14. Awesome work!
  15. If this is the case then you invested 200k. It could take a long time before you get a return. Just change your horizon.
  16. Everything here could be wrong or right depending on your individual situation.

No two companies are the same. Take advice (or insight) with a grain of salt.

  17. Are you exercising? If not get out for a walk/hike or run every day to help you refresh.

I know with kids/marriage/etc this can be hard to do but I (someone in a similar situation) find that an hour of exercise every day makes all the difference in the world.

  18. Optimizing conversion rate is a best practice. Dont hate the player. Hate the game.
  19. Probably just split testing.
  20. Your emergency fund doesn't mean much if things keep inflating like they are right now.
  21. I was thinking the same thing.
  22. Stop worrying about a job and start worrying about skills.

The great thing about software is that you don’t need permission (a job) to make impact and to build skills.

Build something or contribute to open source.

If I were staring my career over and had trouble getting a software job I would get any job I could to sustain life -ex busing tables. Then I would spend all of my nights and weekends working on open source or building things publicly.

If you spend the next year doing open source contributions for 30+ hours a week I can pretty much guarantee that you will have a job.

It will be hard sure. But this is the way.

Develop skills and the jobs will come.
