  1. You being alive right now is very likely a cost that the collective we could have decided to do without. Clean water, the suppression of diseases that'd wipe out entire populaces... Without those, you should likely have died before you were 5. You know what, I think you're right, you should have died before your 5th birthday.
  2. You might be interested in checking out the WHO SMART Guidelines. Nothing on cancer yet AFAIK, but it's evolving.
  3. Had a CEO who extolled how much better open plans were, how vibrant it made the workplace, and so on and so on... Years later she admitted it was just to save money. I refuse to call an open office an "office" - that vibrant office she described back then? Full of people wearing headphones to block out all the noise they otherwise couldn't escape.
  4. How can I trust this comment if this forum isn't on the blockchain!?
  5. 2000 and SimTower. And SimCopter! Oh the good ol' days.
  6. Whew, I carried that tripod around when I was younger, it's a killer.
  7. Curious what your book recommendations would be?
  8. Actually disregard this, I was mistaken.
  9. We haven't used Chromebooks, sorry. For scanners a number of cheap to pricey ones were tried. On the cheap end I don't have the exact model number but I think it was about $30USD from Netum, as well as using apps in cheaper smart-phones using the built-in camera.

I'd guess it's the scanner though, I don't think those control characters are supposed to be sent.

  10. I think the key question here is: are you using GS1 identifiers? If not, I don't think it'd make much sense to throw a non-GS1 identifier in there and expect anyone else to be able to use it. Or is this just internal?
  11. I'm not familiar with that scanner, however that sounds like a scanner issue. I haven't had that issue with GS-128 with the couple scanners I & colleagues have tried. I did a google search and in the Amazon reviews there is someone purporting to be from the manufacturer saying to email them to learn how to make it work, with regards to FNC1.
  12. Just the numbers? Or the number + data?
  13. PicoAPRS, Moblinkd, likely some others I believe will Bluetooth pair to your phone. As will the icom 705 with wifi I think.

I’ve sent messages just fine with the built in pad on a th-d72 and d710g.

  14. Same, well different locations, but same.
  15. After learning kiswahili in Tanzania I went to Uganda for a vacation... At the bus terminal a bwana eventually pulled me aside and told me to quit speaking kiswahili there, because only the thieves spoke it there. I wasn't sure if I should be offended or humiliated. Anyway I went with english/spanish/swahili mixing after that cause brain. Either way skinny dipping in the blue nile was great.
  16. I just got into woodworking as a hobby to keep me active - physically and mentally. So, actually, I do actually want a rather nice drill. The hole it creates is a byproduct of mind, body and tool.

And on safety, what I really want is a sawstop. I'm super super careful, but uh. I really really really don't want to lose my fingers and have them sewn back on. Safety is a really good quality to have, even if it's not idiot proof, even if I can lose my fingers in so many other ways with so many other tools. I want that little bit more, anything just about to not end up in the E.R.

  17. I like it. I’ve also found success as framing it as building tech capability. Focusing people on adding capability or wealth, positive connotations, I think is the way to go.
  18. Burning wood in my fire pit, grilling, having family over, pampering my pup and loving nature.
  19. Trash. Quite unfortunately some of the most shallow thinking I've seen.
  20. Agreed. People don't flourish inside cathedrals, no matter how attractive they look.
  21. It took me a bit to see the hiding in plain sight trajectory of "Met in a bar or restaurant". Everything but it and of course the dominate Met Online, are decreasing. Curious.
  22. Ah, so this is what Bari is up-to now.
  23. You're excluding this part:

    > I had never received any feedback indicating my performance was poor. In fact, it was exactly the other way around: I’ve never had a role that was such a good fit for my expertise before. So I asked if he could detail better where I failed. He refused to..

It is completely unprofessional to fire someone having never given any feedback. Startup or not.

  24. Uhm well yes, medical products are nearly universally regulated. And often don't make it past customs - it's pretty suspect to try to ship a regulated product without proper documentation.
  25. Well someone that doesn't know how to use a ham radio could easily transmit where they're not supposed to, quite possibly causing interference. Your cellphone won't do that.
  26. The man sowed hate. That's his "legacy". Here's to a collective forgetting.
  27. This is not how any of this works...
  28. That is not how that works.
  29. I'm kinda sick of these parallels being drawn between things that societies prioritize to the natural world. Economics isn't a study of the natural world. The ecosystems driving crabs to the beach has nothing to do with capitalism.
