  1. Generally managers still learn their teams names… and I’ve never heard of ICs being numbered
  2. > The only reason a site like this exists is for politicians to distract from the fact that the budget of a nation with currency sovereignty does not actually have to raise revenues with taxes in order to spend money on services (and thus, be an excuse to cut services).

This is not a mainstream view. This _is_ a view of MMT, which is rejected by the majority of current economists, and this context is probably important to people seeing this when it’s just presented as a well known fact

    > In a 2019 survey of top U.S. economists not a single respondent agreed with the basic aspects of MMT

  3. Banks? Banks don’t buy up houses, banks are what helps individuals buy houses. Again this just sounds like someone who recently watched the big short
  4. But … none of this is commercial real estate? It’s all single family homes
  5. The noble blade runners who are valiantly fighting for… more air pollution
  6. If mega institutions are financial extractors who will take all money available, and the units can be rented to make more money, why aren’t they doing it?

Why would the institution turn away free money but individuals owning the houses wouldn’t?

  7. > There are plenty of whales, once those 5% disappeared, price should slowly come down

But by how much? ~3-4% of housing has to be sold, some amount of it will still be bought for renting (as many people still want to rent). Surely this can’t have a very big effect on house price

  8. > there even should be a cap on how many homes an individual can own for rentals

Many people wish to rent, not buy. If we make it so each landlord can own fewer homes, but renting demand stays similar we just incentivise more people becoming landlords

  9. I think specifically spoken like someone who saw The Big Short very recently
  10. Frankly I doubt waymo maliciously and secretly implemented an algorithm to obey most traffic rules yet ignore school buses
  11. Magister means teacher and the things I mentioned. See https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/magister#Latin
  12. Masters degree is from “magister”, meaning director/chief/boss/leader
  13. For a restaurant booking, I like this.

For blob uploads, I’d significantly prefer a fixed format! If I want to automate anything off the back of it it just becomes that few % easier

  14. There’s an easy solution. Don’t fly Ryanair! I’m perfectly happy to take this sacrifice in exchange for cheaper tickets
  15. MD11 has a physical slat lock that won’t fail under hydraulic pressure yeah
  16. > Overly complex stock markets that produce nothing of value should be abolished. Real people have no need for high level financial concepts like that

This is a pretty huge assumption with no real reasoning. Some substance regarding _why_ “high level financial concepts” produce nothing of value would be useful

  17. > generated nearly €80 million in total benefits to the Irish economy

Approximately 75% of the “benefits” is by the WELLBY framework, which considers each “wellbeing point” to be equivalent to €13,000 a year additional income. This could be a valid metric, but it feels a bit iffy, and without this evaluation it would be a significant cost to the Irish economy, so I do not think this UBI can be considered truly a positive return to the economy

  18. It’s quite specifically not money printing, because it’s backed by something.

It could be bad sure but it’s not money printing

  19. This is about UK universities.
  20. I’d be willing to bet the number of students that pick a UK university over Oxbridge in the next year will round to 0%. The times rankings mean nothing at this granularity (whereas being top 20 vs top 100 _is_ significant)
  21. No, I don’t think it is. There is no billionaire secretly hoarding all the top university spots. And no one is saying immigrants are taking the spots. This seems like completely unrelated political posting
  22. Yes, and it is bad if the government do that. It does not mean it is then correct to claim he has beliefs he doesn’t. We should be saying “we don’t know his beliefs and the government is making a power grab”
  23. I don’t think there is yet enough evidence to show the political beliefs of the suspect in either direction. Seems X/Bluesky is awash with certainty that it’s “the other side” but I have not seen any good hard evidence of this
  24. Consumers would probably prefer meta apps stay on the App Store even with this behaviour, and Apple is ultimately beholden to the average consumer
  25. See the last line of my comment.

    > Nonetheless, if the law is being proposed, it is stupid

All i was doing was saying specific wording used in the article causes me to update slightly against the site being unbiased and neutral. There is no grand conspiracy by me here. There is no comment nor opinion on Israel/Palestine within the comment.

  26. “Alastair’s Toupee’s theory of in-app WebViews”?
  27. Acting like a hostile intelligence agency != being a front for Israeli intelligence
  28. > The Anti-Defamation League (ADL), which functions as a front for Israeli intelligence in the US

This sentence does not appear to be backed up by the article it is linking to, and the vibe of it makes me somewhat suspicious of the outlet.

Nonetheless, if the law is being proposed, it is stupid
