  1. I wish no one had taken over. The threat of TikTok is easy to understand right now. It’s going to be much more murky after this deal is complete.
  2. Why does it matter? The information in the post still accurately captures a sentiment held by many people.
  3. You are actually landed on the difference between “impairment” and “disability”! They’re often used interchangeably (along with “handicapped”), but they have specific meanings.

  4. OK! Good luck, I hope you’re never disabled, you won’t enjoy it.
  5. My workout routine was prescribed by an MD who specializing in pain, specifically targeting my areas of pain. Then it was reinforced over eight weeks, four days per week, six hours per day by a team of two physical therapists and one occupational therapist in a pain management program. The program follows the bio-psycho-social model of pain management.

That said, I’m not going to share details with you because your other comments in this thread indicate that you intend to argue in bad faith.

However, if anything I said seems interesting, feel free to google! The bio-psycho-social model is very interesting, it’s the first real advance in pain management since we lost opioids as an option.

These kinds of disorders — the ones you think aren’t real — are really disabling. I genuinely hope that you (or really anyone) never find yourself in this position, it’s truly miserable.

  6. I’m one of those people who have a nonspecific disorder. I get plenty of exercise both aerobic and strength training. It helps with maybe 30% of my pain.

People who play armchair doctor only make things worse for those of us who are actually disabled.

  7. I couldn’t see the whole link on my phone but I knew it would be Moritz Klein.
  8. I guess I really don’t like this message because I am a disabled person. In the exercise that she describes where an instructor tells people to stand up from a position that they think they can’t stand up from, what if I actually can’t stand up? It might lead me to believe that perhaps I’m simply not trying enough.

You might think this contrived, but when people tell you over and over that you’re not trying hard enough because of things you can’t control, you internalize it.

To me — someone who has to ask for help — it seems like that she didn’t really notice that help was the thing that helped.

  9. This was sort of my takeaway too. The OP got help from someone else and thought to herself “if only I’d tried harder I could’ve done this on my own”. That doesn’t seem like a healthy takeaway.
  10. I love writing Ruby. It’s one of the most pleasant and elegant languages I’ve used… but the footguns it comes equipped with rival those of Perl.
  11. I think my low-key long-term goal is to eventually fully eliminate the mouse while still enjoying the niceties of a modern GUI desktop.
  12. Exactly the same! I was a student and couldn’t afford a very nice laptop so it was fluxbox + dillo for me.
  13. > kinda soul crushing regurgitating the circumstances for chronic illness while hoping for a job

I have to do this every time now because I have a resume gap. I don’t have to explain in detail, but even revisiting those three years for a brief explanation sucks.

I’m sure there’s an implicit realization that I will likely ask for accommodations when I explain the gap which likely reduces my chances of being hired.

  14. The kind of high-trust we need to get back (at least here in the states) is the kind between neighbors on the same block. Of course it’s never been wise to trust someone just because you’re both from Boston, but in the past neighbors generally trusted each other and socialized.

It’s particularly striking when I visit my parents’ house. I’m a millennial and I don’t even know my neighbors names and my parents, who are boomers, routinely talk, text and visit their neighbors. Their neighborhood (at least among the old people) feels like a community. Mine does not.

  15. I wouldn’t describe it as the correct response, more like “the best one we can think of right now.”

Living this way is that it’s really exhausting, saps quite a lot of joy out of life and makes people more lonely. It’s far from optimal and a more sustainable option would be to work our way back to the community trust we used to enjoy just ~30 years ago.

  16. Then I don’t know this “feeling”. To me it looks like the kind of professional writing I’ve been doing for the last 20 years.

It’s bonkers that using good grammar and punctuation is now considered a bad thing on the internet.

  17. Sorry, what are you talking about? Why is his post an “AI writing trope”?
  18. “I’m sure there are some number of people out there who only use Facebook Messenger, do not check their email, refuse to use any other messenger”

I don’t know how old you are or where you live, but I’m in my mid 40s and don’t live in a tech city. A good quarter of everyone I know in my age range uses Facebook Messenger as their primary form of texting. Most of them don’t even use Facebook itself anymore, they just have a lot of momentum on Messenger.

  19. I think this is quite a bit more complex when you’re talking about products that operate as common carriers. The historical social contract we have with these services is that we treat them as the digital commons.

Clearly that has changed, but you’ll have to forgive folks for treating the internet as it has been in the ~20 years previous to the current chaos.

  20. Another thing to consider is that, once you are medicated, you have a whole new set of skills to develop.

I remember when I started taking ADHD meds and I was like “wow I can focus now” and proceeded to focus with all my might on the wrong thing.
