- Stock was flat, but revenue more than tripled from $25B to $78B. MSFT is a dividend stock.
If you read through that list and dismiss it as people who were already mentally ill or more susceptible to this... that's what Dr. K (psychiatrist) assumed too until he looked at some recent studies: https://youtu.be/MW6FMgOzklw?si=JgpqLzMeaBLGuAAE
Clickbait title, but well researched and explained.
- There were a lot of that type who were upset when chatGPT was changed to be less personable and sycophantic. Like, openly grieving upset.
- Most people who develop AI psychosis have a period of healthy use beforehand. It becomes very dangerous when a person decreases their time with their real friends to spend more time with the chatbot, as you have no one to keep you in check with what reality is and it can create a feedback loop.
- Tim Cook at Apple was like Steve Ballmer at Microsoft. They scaled the company and made stock owners happy, but weren't true visionaries. I suppose there's a need for both types of leaders.
- Still much more accurate than some other books like Console Wars.
- Kids aren't the ones spending $12k on rare skins, they're buying keys to open lootboxes.
- The guidance counselor does not have the training or time to "fix" the trauma you just gave this kid and his friends. Insane to put minors through this.
- The people building these things are good friends with the bullies and scammers now.
- Related, but not the reason for it. DHH has been posting increasingly racist blogs.
- It's hard to know for sure, but many people are reporting that rules are being enforced unequally to silence news critical of the current administration.
- NYC has roughly the same stats - 40% of the residents there are foreign-born. This is more to do with low birth rates by natives, so population growth in NYC and London is entirely driven by immigration. The biggest problem is that it's too expensive for most people to have and raise kids in major cities.
What was more troubling to me was that he called the Tommy Robinson rallies "heartwarming". TR was a member of an explicitly fascist, white nationalist party. The rallies were full of signs calling for death to Muslims. Or, in the same blog post, his disproven claims of migrant gang r*pes. On top of that, he has written some really vile things about transgender people.
I would like to go to a tech conference and focus on Ruby, not politics. I'd like to leave my identity home and discuss software engineering and interesting technical ideas. DHH has made that impossible.
- The brain-blood barrier typically only allows small, non-polar molecules to pass through into the brain, which complicates a lot of neuro/psych treatments.
- > Scientists need better messaging or else we're going to stop having breakthroughs like this
Sure, but it's really sad that scientists need to justify their funding to the public - they already spend so much time justifying it to the NIH and others for funding.
So many people have had their careers jeopardized by finding pulled mid-project. I am really concerned about our research pipeline, because my post-doc friends are all applying to jobs outside the US now.
- Basically every Western major city is becoming like this.
- Fascinating that all of his examples of free speech seem to involve white nationalists.
- The ruby community has been putting up with DHH's behavior for 20 years [1]. He's just become worse and more of an outspoken bigot lately.
- I really like that my job has me working with lots of different people from lots of walks of life, and we are too busy saving lives to think too much about politics.
However, if I found out that one of the physicians I work with doesn't think I should have a job, doesn't think I should have equal rights, and doesn't think I belong in public spaces, then politics would become unavoidable. I'm not going to work for a bigot who sees me as a second class citizen.
Likewise there are a number of long-term Ruby OS contributors who belong to minority groups DHH has been attacking. Would you attend Railsconf if DHH called your ethnicity gangs of rapists, like he recently has?
- Nah, DHH has too much power and authority to be "cancelled". One person pulled his donations - a very generous continuous gift - because he didn't want to fund Ruby Central if they continued to platform bigotry.
Ruby Central screwed themselves by relying on basically two large donors for their funding, and then offended one of those two donors.
In medicine, we're already seeing productivity gains from AI charting leading to an expectation that providers will see more patients per hour.
