  1. Verbiage is proof of work, and journalists need to make a living, just the same as planning-to-plan product managers.

You can train yourself to skim for maximal extraction per minute. I burned through the article in about 3-4 minutes. I tend to get bogged down by my software developer's close-reading instincts.

  2. tldr tl;dr

Our bodies self-correct to maintain a constant calorie expenditure. Marathoners and lean-mean bush people were found to burn as many calories daily as a middle aged woman from Chicago. Takeaway: eat less if you want to lose weight.

  3. You can hate the guilt, but you can't hate the pleasure -- that wouldn't make any sense.
  4. Lots of sour grapes rationalizing.

Every deprived addict, from the grounded Minecraft player to the imprisoned dope fiend, will tell you the deprivation was good for him, but as soon he's given a shot at another fix, he'll instantly take it.

I hate Slack's always-on nature. That I keep using it should tell me how I really feel about it.

  5. Automatic plug whenever I see this asked: nnhackernews.
  6. decent people with decent products just don't make it.

Which is why you need to make your product a little more than decent. "Evil will always triumph because good is dumb." So be less dumb, and you can stay just as good.

  7. The legal driving age for men should be raised to 40. Problem solved.
  8. You can always end the contract

Most people don't have the kind of eff-thou money, which is why OP asked his question conditioning on unionization.

  9. What are some good resources on Emacs?

    Google.

how long did it take you to debug issues?

For many years, I googled for little elisp snippets I didn't understand.

If you use doom/spacemacs, do you feel the bloat?

Doom and spacemacs users care more about limiting time to productivity. If they cared about bloat, they'd have stuck with vi.

  10. Never heard the author, but having read his blog, I've concluded I am this guy modulo the talent and the fact that he got to my way of thinking in half the time.
  11. Attempting to learn mathematics as some sort of pattern matching... does not work

China (and other countries who put American math education to shame) disagrees.

For you, math may have been a deduction from first principles, but to us mere mortals, math is a decade-long slow reveal through wax-on-wax-off repetition.

  12. The only value of a university math class are the problems and their solutions. Lecture is worthless.

MIT does this right. Students can boost their grade by submitting revised solutions after the initial marking.

  13. Typical of most management primers: 2,000 words of hand-wavy psychobabble, none of it actionable, all of it music to other psychobabblers.
  14. Software is a quick win. Everyone loves the quick win.
  15. they simply want access to more cheap and compliant labor

Only bad programmers believe software scales with manpower. And it's those bad programmers who become hiring managers; the good programmers keep programming.

  16. Be gentle with the balls.
  17. Sounds like you need to get laid.
  18. Programming is a one-person task. Looping people in gives the rest of us something to schedule meetings around. So it really depends on what you want, getting the job done, or creating more jobs.
  19. You have just 4 years to learn the kind of math that you'll never use, but will genuinely make you a smarter person. You have 25+ years to learn programming, which is akin to running a cash register after five years.
  20. Putting OP's "small side project" aside, anything, including houses, that can sell for close to half a million USD is going to involve lawyers who will ensure the seller is made whole.
