  1. Follow-up from the video MegaLag made about a year ago exposing some of Honey's dubious business practices.
  2. Yeah, my full names are Jeremia Josiah, and on my work permit they wrote the Thai version as เจอเรเมีย โยชิอา. I cannot figure out why they chose to use จ for the J in Jeremia but ย for the J in Josiah. Both are pronounced the same and I would consider จ the correct choice. I would consider ย more correct for representing a word with Y.
  3. > When Windows 12 is announced, Windows 11 may finally be usable.

I think it will still be objectively bad. But maybe compared to Windows 12, it will seem good.

  4. What you describe is what they describe as well:

    > For column-level changes, this often means adding new columns to a table that have the characteristics you want while leaving the current columns as-is.

I think what makes it confusing is that their diagrams depict a completely separate schema, but what they describe is really just altering the existing schema.

  5. The last time I visited the US was in 2017, and I vowed never to go again. All because of the treatment by immigration. Over a number of visits during the years, I have been shouted at multiple times, talked down to, and generally treated like crap. I am travelling on a South African passport (I am white, though, before anyone tries and blames it on racism).

This last incident in 2017, I was standing by the immigration officer, and while he was looking through my documents, I was looking around at the people waiting in the queue. He asked if I was travelling with someone. I said no. He asked why I was looking at the queue. I said I was just looking around. He told me to stop looking around and look in front of me. I said OK. Somewhere during this I put my hands in my pocket, so he told me to take my hands out of my pocket. I was a bit startled at this and trying to figure out what was going on with the guy. I was obviously too slow for him so he shouted loud "take your hands out of your damn pocket". I just zipped my mouth and wanted to get through it.

Once I got past him, I needed to get a connecting flight to Mexico. I walked down a passage following the directions and saw that I was going to end up in the main check-in area. Since I was just connecting, I was confused and I asked two immigration officers whether I am going in the right direction. The lady just told me "keep moving sir". I tried to explain that I was connecting and thought I was going in the wrong direction. She then shouted at me "keep moving!". I told her again "please, just listen to me", and she shouted at me again. Thankfully, the guy with her told her to calm down and took a minute to listen to me and explained that I was going the right way.

Honestly, this trip was the last straw for me and I vowed never to go back. The contrast between the immigration in the US and other countries - especially compared to Asia - was night and day. I decided I would visit countries that are happy to have me visit and treat me with dignity instead.

Another time in the US, I was walking past a construction site. I was walking outside the safety barriers, but on the same side of the street. I guy rushed out at me and started shouting at me to get on the opposite side of the road. Huge guy. Looked like he wanted to attack me and was red in the face of fury and spittle sprayed all over me while he was shouting at me.

Quite honestly, there are too many angry people over there. I have visited many countries and never experienced anything like the angry people in the US.

  6. You may also want to consider offering an API. I currently use (and pay for) the TinyPNG API.
  7. This sounded so familiar, I actually paused and looked at the blogger's name to see whether he was not an ex-colleague, perhaps. If had exactly the same experience with Monday (last day of sprint) that worked on my nerves so much that I could not pick up another ticket from the backlog because it will upset someone's burndown charts
  8. Yeah, I found it unusable on Firefox. It would not respond to clicks on any of the links in the sidebar navigation. Works without an issue on Chrome
  9. I do baking and make confectionary, and I think it is for much the same reason that programmers also like woodworking - the fact that it is something physical that you can touch and feel (and taste, in the case of baking). Then there's the smell as well, which may be relevant for woodworking too.
  10. For those interested in using Google Docs, as opposed to Word, I have developed Cloudpress [1] to allow exporting from Google Docs to various Content Management Systems. This includes headless CMSs like Contentful, so you can use it with Jamstack as well.

Cloudpress also supports exporting from Notion and also has an API and Zapier integration so you can automate your entire publishing flow.

  11. Fun fact: In South Africa we called these a "stiffy" because it was so rigid compared to the 5¼-inch floppy.
  12. And yet, all Microsoft's demos for the upcoming changes for Blazor in .NET 8 (like SSR) has been a public facing recipe site (e.g. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QD2-DwuOfKM). I'd say this is a very similar use case as the Microsoft Store.

I love .NET and ASP.NET Core, but I use it purely for backend. And even there, I use 3rd party libraries like Fast Endpoints (https://fast-endpoints.com/). Microsoft keeps bringing in new technologies and effectively abandoning the ones that fall out of favour (look at the progression from MVC -> Razor Pages -> Blazor). I do not blame the Microsoft Store team for not trusting the .NET team to not simply abandon Blazor as well somewhere down the line and instead opt for other technologies for the front-end.

  13. What are the legalities regarding using another company's name and logo as social proof without explicit conscent from that company?

I am running my own Saas company (https://www.usecloudpress.com/) and I ask explicit permission from companies that use my product whether I can use their name, logo, and some testimonial text on my website. I would never even consider using it without their permission.

  14. I think you are going to run into problems on most of these platforms. Either issues like the on mentioned by OP, or just having to compete against people that are willing to do the job for 1/10th the price that you will do it for.

For me, I got my clients through my personal blog about programming where some people contacted me and asked to hire me. You can also just start being very active on the relevant communities in your niche and build up a reputation.

All of this takes time, but I believe it to be the most reliable long term strategy to get work from high quality clients on your own terms.

  15. Ooh yeah, works great, thanks! It's a pity I have to buy a subscription as my needs are more of a once-off.
  16. I've had a look at a number of these "simple" (i.e ones where I don't have to write a complex script) scraping tools recently and none of them seem to support what I consider to be a fairly common scenario of navigating to sub pages.

In my case I have a landing page (with pagination) with a list of records I want to extract. However, to extract the full information I need for each record, I need to click on each item and navigate to a detail page to extract further info.

Looking at your app and docs you don't seem to support this either. Is this something you are considering?

  17. https://www.usecloudpress.com/ - Allows you to export content from Google Docs and Notion to Content Management Systems like WordPress, Webflow, Contentful, etc. I will export the content with the correct formatting, export images, and also handles other elements like tables, embeds, and more.
  18. Seeing kanom krok baitoey (the Pandan green cakes) on there was surprising. Those and normal kanom krok are by far my favourite Thai snacks here in Bangkok. Had some just an hour ago :)
  19. I am the creator of Cloudpress [1], which takes a bit of different approach than most of the other Notion CMSs out there. Cloudpress assists you when you have an existing CMS or headless CMS and want to get your content from Notion into that CMS.

This is useful for teams that use Notion to write content (such as blog posts of help articles) but use a more traditional CMS to host that content. We use Notion internally for our blog posts and documentation which is hosted on Contentful.

Besides Notion, it also supports exporting content from Google Docs to any of the supported CMSs.

  20. I am. Feel free to give me a shout via Twitter (username in my HN Bio) or via email which you can find on my Personal website (listed in Bio as well)
  21. Yeah, I am with you and do not trust the longevity of any MS-related UI technology. History seems to indicate that it will either be outright killed or will die a slow death as they jump on the next shiny thing.

I love ASP.NET Core but this attitude sadly seems to have infected it as well. There's still a lot of room for improvement in MVC and Razor Pages, but these seem to be in all but maintenance mode as focus has shifted over to Blazor and Minimal APIs.

  22. A couple of years ago I watched a lot of Coffeezille, Spencer Cornelia and some others who exposed online scams. Initially, I found it entertaining but over time I came to the conclusion that their videos aren't really protecting anyone. They themselves (Coffee, Spencer, etc) admit on some of their videos do basically nothing to protect anyone from scams. You can literally shove tons of evidence in someone's face that guru X is a scammer, and they still won't believe it.

So, I have come to the conclusion that they (Coffee, Spencer, etc) are as much part of that whole ecosystem as the scammers themselves.

They don't do this to protect anyone - if they wanted to they can simply go with their evidence to the authorities. They depend on these scammers to make videos from which they can make money. And that is all it is about to them in the end - about making money. If the scammers went away tomorrow they'd be out of a career as well.

  23. It only seems to convert the markdown syntax to normal Docs formatting. Since Docs does not natively support the concept of a "code block", it would make sense that this is not supported.
  24. Years ago at one of my first job as a tech lead, our boss wanted give us the same computers as the people who will be using the application (this was a Windows desktop application). His argument was that we should experience the application running on the same hardware as the users will experience it.

I had to go into a long discussion explaining that we need to run a whole bunch of development tools besides running the application and therefore need much more powerful computer. I also explained that, if he makes developers that will by the hour, work deliberately slower, it will cost him more in the end. I think it was this final argument that won him over.
