  1. At best this is a violation of international law, at worst we have seen many times how badly things can turn when leaders are removed by foreign power.
  2. The crew on these ships are usually all Russians, the ship is often registered in Cayman, Panama or somewhere else. These ships often sail under a third nationality, but when the ships are seized, only complaints are filed from Russian lawyers. Take from that what you will.
  3. im an average guy and carrying a 2.2kg laptop is no issue. Its well worth it for the days where I work a full day from the laptop.
  4. My macbook pro 16'' is very heavy too at ~2.2kg
  5. Yeah, I suppose this workflow is not for everyone. I can only imagine Valve has very specific issue or requirements in mind when they hire contractors like this. When you hire like this, i suspect what one really pay for is a well known name that will be able to push something important to you to upstream linux. Its the right way to do it if you want it resolved quickly. If you come in as a fresh contributor, landing features upstream could take years.
  6. European country, it was a fairly big news story this summer
  7. For the past year, single chinese tourists have travelled around the country emptying stored of nearly any kind of gift card. Its some kind of money laundering scheme I think? So recently stores in affected areas started locking up gift cards, though its hard to stop as buying all gift cards isnt really illegal
  8. Hmm, screencasting is finally working properly for me now. It was a loooong road...
  9. Aint that the truth. D-Bus isnt that terribly shit either, we just need to solve this SecretManager issue...
  10. Perhaps the SecretManager deserves some extra attention, but I concur. We worked long enough on this, please dont split whats left of the linux desktop...
  11. For the record, I think Immich is very good, and I use it myself. But there is something about the design and performance in the mobile app that still makes it feel "not quite there yet" on iOS at least.
  12. > something being down or not is pretty black and white

it really isn't. We often have degraded performance for a portion of customers, or just down for customers of a small part of the service. It has basically never happened that our service is 100% down.

  13. I work for a small company. We have no written SLA agreements.
  14. They could, but accurate reporting is not good for their SLAs
  15. Yeah. I only work for a small company, but you can be certain we will not update the status page if only a small portion of customers are affected, and if we are fully down, rest assured there will be no available hands to keep the status page updated
  16. I have used nodejs quite a bit, and I would say it generally performs quite well. Its not as good at making the most out of monster hardware though.
  17. No, it wasn't, and these extremely marginal results got way too much attention compared to the millions of results showing all the valuable results from broad vaccination.
  18. Yeah, its like, we all hated the useless Clippy, but at least it wasnt intentionally made to make the product worse and steal your data better
  19. Making these ad companies liable for the scams they allow (even take a premium for running them) seems like the only way forward.
  20. I am already using claude to help me shopping. It can be so hard to find the actual specifications of a product. Amazon is filled with nonsense information, and its nearly impossible to compare different variants of things like monitors, tvs, cpus and other technical things that clearly are made with certain specifications in mind.
  21. Most text selection has also completely broken overt he last couple of iOS versions.
  22. I have mostly kept to linux and macos since 2008, so I was shocked when I could still find the old XP style control panels in windows when I tried it a little about 2 years ago
  23. Secure Enclave is actually a real dedicated innovation and everything Apple built around this secure box. And the real innovation is not even the technology, but being focused over a decade to design all products to work without making a backdoor. That cant have been easy over so many years
  24. I thought I was just incapable of learning. I find it so difficult to write on my ios keyboard.
  25. This. This is also a reason why its so impressive google docs/sheets has managed to stay largely the same for so long
  26. I have seen no signs there are any real GPU alternatives for ARM
  27. I dont really know what has happened, but many forces have had to improve Linux kernel incrementally. 15 years ago, linux was terrible at suspend-to-ram, wifi drivers a nightmare. Power efficiency was lagging far behind on most architectures. Everyone from intel, to amd, router vendors, server datacenters and android manufacturers have gradually improved these parts over years and years and now, there seems to be enough vested interest that linux compatibility is not a third afterthought, but having good linux support early means you can launch on a android phone, in the datacenter, or build for a custom SoC.
  28. I ran my own Wireguard for years, but its too clunky and difficult to put all my devices on it. And if the power at my house goes out, the net is fully down. I suppose its a trade-off for using Tailscale now, with a great command line tool and a great UI so I have actually onboarded the rest of my family here. It was too much of a hassle with plain Wireguard nodes.
  29. Meta and Alphabet are mostly ads + desperately trying to find other ways to make as much money as ads
  30. Nah, ffmpeg volunteers dont owe you or Google anything. They are giving you free access to their open project.
