- I think the reason AirTag works is because Apple turns it on-by-default on i-devices and people can't be bothered to go turn it off. For a chat to work on the same scale it would literally need Apple or Google to ship it as enabled-by-default on all phones.
- 20+ years as a professional developer and I still have to argue with coworkers on why MongoDb is a terrible fit for their data, which is clearly relational, just because said coworkers can't be bothered to learn SQL.
- > High currents, often resulting from rapid charging, quick acceleration, or high-speed driving, can negatively affect the battery’s state of health.
So to preserve battery health I need to spend 8 hours charging the battery at opposed to 45 minutes? Not a great selling point for EVs.
- > then that has to be replaced by finding the perfect candidate who can immediately be productive.
We're called freelance consultants. And we charge a high price for that service.
- > (which AFAIK you only need for NVIDIA GPUs).
Which is what a lot of users have.
- An alternative in sitautions where OTP-only is allowed. E.g. I work as a freelance contractor and every single customer requires MFA with GPS tracking. Some also require accessing Bluetooth on the phone.
- GrapheneOS is nice for people using Google Pixel phones. And useless for anyone else.
- How is this something "every programmer should know" ? I mean 95% of us work with software that is not performance critical, where security/auditing/monitoring/stability/maintainability/etc. is more important than raw performance.
- I was under the impression that hacker news was not a place for sharing personal anecdotes, but rather a place for factual debate.
- Why are the top comments in this thread all personal anecdotes? Is this reddit now?
- One downside to pirated content is: 99% of the time it only has English audio track and the majority of the world's population does not have English as their native language. I have small children and they don't understand one word of English, and even if they did, I want them to hear their native language on tv, not English.
- > Btw. Ads in front of streaming content I just selected, to tell me about other streaming content on the same service I did NOT select should also be on the NO list.
I'm looking at you, Apple TV+.

- So because I think it is ok that smoking cigarettes is legal, therefore I am perfectly happy if my wife or child started smoking?
- How is this any different from any job? I need money to eat and pay rent and I am forced to offer my body as a tool for an employer in exchange for payment, regardless if that job entails sex or laying bricks, if I don't offer my body for work I can't eat or live in a house.
And keep in mind that prostitutes are not exclusively women, there are a lot of male prostitues.
- > LLMs in particular can be a very fast, surprisingly decent (but, as you mention, very fallible) replacement for Stack Overflow
I think that sentence nails it. For the people who consider "searching stackoverflow and copy/pasting" as programming, LLMs will replace your job, sure. But software development is so much more, critical thinking, analysing, gathering requirements, testing ideas and figuring out which to reject, and more.
- So what you're saying is Twitter/X works the same way as every other human communication medium, i.e. provocative statements get more attention.
On the other hand, if zero people retweet your "substantive Tweet", maybe it's just not that interesting to anybody but you?
- Or just pay the $10/month to Kagi, for search results that aren't garbage.
- > For minimal system requirements, the Tube Archivist stack needs around 2GB of available memory for a small testing setup and around 4GB of available memory for a mid to large sized installation. Minimal with dual core with 4 threads, better quad core plus. This project requires docker. Ensure it is installed and running on your system.
What the hell. Is this an entire OS?

> We believe that making people invest time, commit to a trial, and put skin in the game will help you build a more engaged user base. This friction weeds out the people who aren’t serious and creates a sense of urgency. It also forces you to focus on the customers and users that really matter.
- The original Settlers 1 game, released in 1993, had ingenious copy protection built in. It had multiple levels of copy protection, that would activate, if the copy protection was attempted circumvented, i.e. cracked. It would not let you complete levels due to some characters missing/never appearing and the likes, if you used a cracked version of the game. Much like you describe with GTA IV, users thought this was a buggy game, while in reality it was a buggy crack.
- > - use an open source version of Android on your phone, without the Google services
Having tried this many times over the last 10 years, I have never encountered a stable, non-vendor Android distribution for any of my phones. Oh there are always multiple available Android images for most popular phones, however in my experience they are always unstable in ways that make them too much of a hassle to use. I have experienced bluetooth suddenly disconnecting from my headset and refusign to reconnect until i reboot the phone, WiFi drops connection and needs a phone reboot, unable to make phone calls or receive SMS until I reboot the phone, phone randomly reboots without any interaction. These are primary uses for my phone and if the primary functionality of the Android image is broken, I do not want to use it.

- I'm a consultant in Denmark and I charge approximately €100/hour. When I used to be an FTE, my salary would be around €33/hour. And I use an agency for finding clients, they add approximately 20% on top of the bill, before they send it to the client.
- I imagine it is the same for any elite level sport. Except perhaps chess.

Says the person complaining "why isn't my language supported"
- And thus, Reddit holds all the power. If the mods are so attached to their community, that Reddit can dictate whatever terms they want, then the mods have no leverage.
