  1. I'm a vim user, using orgmode. I've noticed the blog of Sascha Chua. She posts Emacs News and in these posts there are some orgmode gems. But she is posting more on Emacs. Maybe interesting to look these posts up: https://sachachua.com/topic/
  2. There are quite a few documents about the building of the Niagara power plant at oldwoodward gallery: http://www.oldwoodward.com/gallery/index.php?/search/psk-202...

If the search link doesn't work, search for Niagara in the photo gallery.

  3. There was a presentation at Fosdem 2025 about this work: https://archive.fosdem.org/2025/schedule/event/fosdem-2025-5...
  4. I don't want to make advertisement, but what you describe is what Beeline is selling for bicycle and motor bike. I've not tried it. I don't know how good it works.
  5. These are available in the Netherlands and Belgium. And as the cyclists there like to travel a little bit further, the network is extended around north of France, the German border, some in Luxembourg. This is a very nice way to travel.
  6. Stasiware is more appropriate. Stasi (Staatssicherheit) was the administration in charge of spying each citizen of east Germany. It runs until 1989. So more people remember the opening of the archives in the 1990ies.
  7. If a government was to plan something like that, there would be protest in front of the parliament. Were are the protest in front of Google main office? If there are a few hundreds of angry developers handing out flyers at Google employees on there way to the office, explaining how bad is Google, maybe Google will move, because they care about the bad publicity. Open source developers involved with Android and app in California should walk in front of Google offices to protest.
  8. I've been using https://bikerouter.de/ to plan my ride and then import the GPX into OsmAnd~. Works quite well. It is possible to host brouter (which is what bikerouter is running) on your own http server.

In OsmAnd~ just remember to fix the track to existing paths, otherwise OsmAnd~ routing engine may have difficulty to guide you. I've never dig into it, but it looks like there can be a small offset between the GPX and Osm map.

  9. The article is interesting. I like the heatmap approach and trying to measure the physical differences between both keyboards. This is putting data behind a feeling and it helps looking for improvement. However for other parts of our body (like when going to the gym), I've been told to stretch as much as to exercise. I find odd the focus on reducing stretching in the article. I understand the issue for previously injured people and it is good that ergonomic keyboards and other hardware exist. While hitting the keys, our finger muscles get stronger in a specific movement, but like other muscles, they get shorter. Some stretching helps to keep a balance between strength and motion range. Would it be better to stretch our fingers after a long typing session, or even better, stretch while typing ;-) using some odd placed keys for their gym effect?
  10. > As for the electrical engineering, is the one with most pitfalls and the most expensive. A wrong voltage will release the magical smoke and is another 30$ for a board. Tread carefully.

I enjoyed reading "Exploring Beaglebone" by Derek Molloy a few years ago, because the book has sections "how to destroy your beaglebone" and "how to interface with electronics". The website seems broken. The book's ISBN is 978-1-118-93512-5. Some of the recommendations there (voltage clamping circuit on the 1.8 V analog inputs) can save your board.

  11. > - Give me an app to scan my (mostly neatly-written) notes into text, maybe with hooks so I can train it on my own quirks of notation. Then I can review my notes more easily - even on the go - during the semester, and rearrange & reformat & refactor them.

Some tablets have apps for your first request. If I write by hand so that I can read myself later, my Supernote Nomad can transcript and export to text file. It's not perfect, but with the fast feedback, I can rewrite a word more cleanly when I see that a letter was not recognized.

  12. I remember reading that a cow health monitoring in the Netherlands would generate about 20 GB of data daily (location, temperature, how many hours walking vs lying). So 5G makes sense in some agricultural setups.
  13. I don't know the current state of readiness for the milking robots, but 10 years ago it was a nightmare. When a cow got blocked in the robot, the farmer get notify and stops what he is doing to check the cow and the robot. With the free access to the milking robot 24/7 it means that as a farmer you can get your phone ringing to free a cow stuck in the robot at 3 am, or when you are 20 miles away in a field. This level of stress caused many farmers to sell their milking robot and come back to two milking sessions a day, typically 6 am and 6 pm.
  14. In Germany, there is as well the Freiberufler status for one-off side gigs. I don't know all the details, but my wife used that for a one-off job.
  15. I've got a few Bosch appliances. I like the Bosch website where I can get spare parts [1]. When the door spring of my 15 years old dishwasher broke a couple of years ago, I went to the Bosch website, enters the model number and got an exploded view with all the parts. I ordered the spring and replaced it myself. A few minutes of work. Much faster than finding a repair guy with a free appointment slot. My Bosch washing machine has a WiFi label on it. Never connected it. Only using the buttons on the front panels. On the same website, you can get the instruction manual PDF, so I usually have a peek review in the manual of a device before buying. I don't know if that spare parts service is available everywhere but I have used it in 3 European country so far.

  16. In the Netherlands they build the neighborhood like that, but at the dead end of the street is a small path for walking/biking. So driving to school would take 2 km, but walking only 500 m.
  17. Similarly when goals are linked to earnings and the company reports adjusted earnings... So changing the earnings by disregarding some expenses or some sales out of the calculation. The one in charge of this adjustment can play to allow or dismiss bonus for the year.
  18. Looking at current Ukraine situation, the drone pilots are a couple of kilometers behind the front. The radio range of the drones is not that big. Yes there are higher tech ones, but there are still people exposed at the front.
  19. Or even emacs, AS Amy Grinn showed last Werk at Fosdem.
