  1. This. When I moved from Ontario, Canada (where they charge a yearly fee for them), to CA, I was all excited to get a vanity plate - until I saw they also charge a yearly fee..

In the most ironic twist of all - Ontario did away with license plate renewals a few years ago, and now, I would actually consider a vanity plate..

I've always wondered if a regular plate was better for avoiding speeding tickets - a vanity plate is much easier to validate, IMHO.

  2. Agreed (without regard to applicability of this article) - I was hit twice (i.e. other cars running into mine, their fault) within a calendar year after 5 day RTO went into effect in mid 2024 at work here (the valley).
  3. This feels a lot like the "humans must be ready at any time to take over from FSD" that Tesla is trying to push. With presumably similar results.

If it works 85% of the time, how soon do you catch that it is moving in the wrong direction? Are you having a standup every few minutes for it to review (edit) it's work with you? Are you reviewing hundreds of thousands of lines of code every day?

It feels a bit like pouring cement or molten steel really fast: at best, it works, and you get things done way faster. Get it just a bit wrong, and your work is all messed up, as well as a lot of collateral damage. But I guess if you haven't shipped yet, it's ok to start over? How many different respins can you keep in your head before it all blends?

  4. And the baker then tells people to buy his bread, because it's so good, the butcher buys it every day!
  5. Sure - NOW. Growing up in the 80s? How did you FIND things? For example, a shop willing to install random non-OEM car part for me? I had to hunt through the yellow pages, cold-call a bunch of places, etc.

My parents are STILL in that mind-set - TV "tells you" about stuff - and TV never lies!!

They're seeing more and more advertising during their "shows". And sadly, becoming more and more susceptible to it as they age - like the thousands of dollars of "apocalypse food buckets" they bought from some televangelist. Most of which they had to leave behind when they moved into the retirement community (ignoring the rationality of buying it in the first place).

  6. This. Even watching cable TV in a hotel room feels like a different life.

OTOH, my (teen) kids get a kick out of watching commercials sometimes, because it's something novel to them and they say it actually helps bring their attention to stuff they had no idea existed..

  7. I have a few social accounts, but no apps installed on my primary, 2.5+ year old S21. I prefer to visit via browser (firefox, mostly).
  8. And then wonder if they'll try to take your citizenship away anyway - the exact boat I'm in. Naturalized after almost 20 years of holding a GC, because I expected trouble with this administration - and now wondering they'll try to take away my citizenship because I did it recently.

I actually expected to leave and have my right to come back not dependent on GC status (which expires after 6 months), but due to family have stayed so far. by the by - I'm a citizen of that dangerous country bordering the US - Canada.

  9. Definitely got shingrix once I hit 50. The first one hit me pretty hard..

Did a blood antibody test, for some reason, no rubella anti-bodies. Will get that + dTap (9 years old, need tetanus booster soon anyway) before they outlaw them..

  10. Consider yourself lucky. My mom had measles as a kid (1940s) and for several years had a high rate of ear infections, etc.
  11. Wasn't / isn't Grok already there? It already supported the "white genocide in SA" conspiracy theory at one point, AFAIK.
  12. CNN, ABC et al are on the left IN FOX NEWS WORLD only. Objectively, they're center-right, just like most of the democrat party.
  13. This. LLM is NOT the tool for a pharma lab - properly trained ML is the right tool. Heck, English is probably not even the right LANGUAGE to use for discussing chemical interactions.
  14. So are you still allowed real wine at communion then? A bottle of beer after working on your car all day? I know some christians who preach "100% dry", others are more relaxed. Some are fine with contraceptives (including many Pentecostals, which is how I was raised), quite a few overweight people, etc. And they're just as christian as you are.

It sounds like you're going for the "unlikely to need it" plans, which go broke when you actually get sick..

  15. So that's not unlimited.. I could imagine a CEO could burn through 5GB pretty quick.
  16. Do they come with free mid-tier phones? What if you need 4-5 lines? What if, as a CEO, he needs a better plan than "basic prepaid, lowest-priority-subject-to-throttling"?
  17. I think he's quoting that from the other article, not necessarily computing it himself. I think that article was about the cost of broadband + smartphones.

We pay ~$100/month for 1G broadband (I realize this could be lowered somewhat), and ~$100-120 for 5 phone lines for the family (AT&T prepaid). I'd like to see you make a household with multiple lines + broadband work for less than $100-125.

And that's not even that hard - I know some people spend $300+ JUST on their phone plans, in addition to broadband. And then if you factor in amortized cost of phone replacement? It's closer to $200 than to $50 for example, IMHO.

  18. Had the same thing with an HP DV7 (IIRC) and nvidia 7600go. Baked it in the oven, and it booted up a handful more times, but ultimately died long before it should have. And I LOVED the more squarish form factor it had.. I got some $$ back from a credit card company (it died before 2 years were up), but I could only find 16:9 replacements..
  19. Another few orders of magnitude? Like 100-1000x more than we're already doing? Got a few extra suns we can tap for energy? And a nanobot army to build various power plants? There's no way to do 1000x of what we're already doing any time soon.
