  1. At some point the EU just should impose sanction on companies operating in the EU and implementing this kind of sanction.
  2. Adjustable-gauge are used in Switzerland for a mountain line (Montreux-Interlaken) all through the year. I have never seen temperature issue mentioned. https://www.gpx.swiss/en/stories/technology (the video is rather cool)
  3. exactly and I think it's shocking that everyone is just repeating lies without putting them in context.
  4. no but other countries don't invoke the bible all the time when debating laws.
  5. The article is rather funny as French are supposedly "terrible at foreign languages", but try to find a Briton that can speak anything else than English, it's like finding a needle in a haystack.
  6. I think I will just skip HN in the future. The number of relevant post to tech and business in the US now that are getting flagged is becoming ridiculous.
  7. Same, will not risk my mental health for a trip to the US.
  8. Is it me or mods are actively hiding everything that is critical of the current admin? This post is 6 hours late, 308 points and at the bottom of the 3rd page. This is not the first post that is either flagged or just made invisible. Is HN still a place we can trust?
  9. What democratic government did they overthrew? Because the ROC was no more democratic than the CCP... and Taiwan didn't have real election till the 1990.
  10. No healthcare, no public research to today's extent, no military etc. etc. Yes when your government is doing nothing normally it doesn't cost that much.
  11. Yes of course but without the passport scan + fingerprint + travel authorization.
  12. Referring to 'unelected officials' highlights a misunderstanding of how the EU operates and getting really tiring. They are named like most executive of other countries and confirmed by the EU parliament. The French prime minister is even more an unelected official than a EU commmissioner.
  13. EU + UK line are going to disappear when the new EU passport check (ESS) and electronic travel authorization (euphemism introduced by the US to call a visa) will come into force. And now that EU citizen have to do the same for UK it will to just transform a quick Eurostar travel in a big headache.
  14. 5 years ago, the value of companies listed on the LSE was 2 times the size of Paris. Now they are almost equal (Paris was first in 2023). In 2024 only 18 IPO took place on the LSE, the lowest number in the last 20 years. London is still the major place for financial services but other European center are growing faster.
  15. There is no prevention strategy that will prevent all cancers. Even people with the most healthy lifestyle can get a cancer. That's why you have to do both.
  16. The Republican party is also flipping seats in the Senate and the House, yet you seem focused on Harris. It's not that people are voting for other Democratic candidates, the country is simply becoming more conservative as people leaning on left are simply not voting.
  17. Same for "2.4 GHz wireless network" but it's supposed to be 2.4 gigahertz if fully spelled. I suppose there is a logic behind but it's not obvious.
  18. Sometimes you are going to loose a lot of time trying to make a ChatGPT solution work when Google would have provided right away the right answer... Just yesterday I asked ChatGPT for an AWS IAM policy. ChatGPT-4o provided an answer that looked ok but was just wrong, tried to make it work without success. Just Googled it and the first result provided me the right answer.
  19. Ok yes the video will not play on it's own if you point to the link directly. However this is a news site, and if you click on the main page that link to that article then the video will autoplay. This is a way hundreds of website are using to bypass the no autoplay rules.
  20. Take your Ipad, open Music play a track then go to: https://www.20min.ch/fr/video/france-fusillade-explosion-lev... The video will automatically play (with sound) and the Music will stop. (It won't play on Safari desktop though)

On Reddit as you need your finger to scroll and a lot of videos are in the way it's almost impossible to scroll without touching one-> the music will stop.

  21. No Just did the test before posting on my ipad pro to make sure it was still the case. Music + advertisement on Reddit -> no more music (and the same with the autoplay videos on 2 news sites)
  22. Sound management is a nightmare... you put some playlist on Music and start to surf the web with Safari only for the music to be interrupted because whatever random web site has a video on auto-play... Seriously?
  23. Only because Germany is producing less and less electricity. In 2017 Germany was producing 558 TWh vs 430 TWh last year...
  24. No if you operate in the EU you have to comply that's it. If you buy something from Joe the farmer in PA, you are the one importing it (you are paying the custom duties) and Joe the farmer doesn't have to comply with anything related to GDPR. If Joe the farmer wants to sell directly its product in the EU (not from the US) then he has to comply.
  25. They may not provide direct R&D details but they will provide direct information about offers price, negotiation status etc. This is part of the Snowden leaks that people seems to have completely forgotten.

  26. Funny that you mention France when the USA is #1 in the world for corporate spying. Having been involved in western Europe for deal where US competitor were given "advantage", USA spying was always number one concern over all other countries (and this is how counter spying agencies brief companies) as it had more direct economic damage and is more difficult to identify than Chinese spying.

Few examples just for Airbus every few years you get report of US spying: * https://www.dw.com/en/airbus-fires-16-over-suspected-german-... * https://edition.cnn.com/video/news/2015/05/01/airbus-spying....

  27. I don't know but as someone who is currently taken in between my kids needing a lot of support and my mother who is declining and requiring a lot of help (+ jobs), I would welcome any progress regarding aging to make people as fit as possible as currently my life is a bit difficult.
  28. Ok but that can be said of any technology. Chemistry is bad because someone used it to poison their friend. Phones are bad because it can be used for bomb threats, cars are bad because they put out of work the whole horse industry and you can go on and on forever. Every single technology can be abused but it doesn't mean that they mainly cause damage.
  29. Out of curiosity can you just give me pratical example of: "it's so cool but once that tech is out in the real world, it just mostly causes damage."
