- Funny coincidence, these are the exact sci-fi books I read this and previous year, in the exact order I read them (I read some non-sci-fi books in between to not get overwhelmed). I finished Project Hail Mary literally one hour ago. All the books were great, but Remembrance of Earth's Past series was literally life-changing, truly a masterpiece.
I'm guessing you plan to read Dune next? ;) I plan to start with it during Christmas break.
- This is my experience as well. Mistral models may not be the best according to benchmarks and I don't use them for personal chats or coding, but for simple tasks with pre-defined scope (such as categorization, summarization, etc.) they are the option I choose. I use mistral-small with batch API and it's probably the best cost-efficient option out there.
- Is it because the model is not good enough at following the prompt, or because the prompt is unclear?
Something similar has been the case with text models. People write vague instructions and are dissatisfied when the model does not correctly guess their intentions. With image models it's even harder for model to guess it right without enough details.

- Doesn't infinity include every possible option (possible meaning that it can happen within rules of physics)? If the model of the universe is one where events are happening with some probability, then if the probability is nonzero and the number of universes is infinite, then the event should happen in some of the universes.
(Still a layman, though.)
- I always wondered about the idea posed in this short story. Does the "everything that can happen does happen" theory apply to free will? If there really are infinite universes, is there a one when I'm walking a street full of people and out of nowhere we all start singing Ode to Joy in perfect unisono? Or get naked and have a massive orgy? No law of physics rules this out.
(Sorry, I'm a layman.)

- evil.example.com can be a legitimate-looking website (e.g. a new tool a person might want to try). If it has a login with email code, it can try to get the code from a different website (e.g. aforementioned Shopify).
For the username + password hack to work, the evil.example.com would have to look like Shopify, which is definitely more suspicious than if it's just a random legitimate-looking website.
- Intentionality of the path is a good prerequisite of the object being technological, and its hostility is a possibility given the Dark Forest resolution is true (which we can't prove nor disprove). The sentence sounds a bit sensationalist but it seems scientifically valid to me, considering this is an area where we have little more than a bunch of unprovable hypotheses.
- There is basically identical project I've been aware of for some time, and it seems to be shutting down in two weeks according to their website. What's the story here?
- There's a difference between passing on video tapes and having a pocket machine with an unlimited amount of adult content. Just my opinion, but I think it's worrying kids can access it in basically a few clicks.
But I agree, forcing verification will not be effective enough, kids will find their way. The real solution is more education on this topic from younger age.

- Okay, I genuinely thought that consuming as much protein powder as you describe would make person feel sick, you surprised me. To each his own. The fact remains, research suggests overdosing on protein supplements has potential health hazards.
"According to international consensus, the daily reference intake of protein for the healthy adult population is 0.8 g/kg body weight. However, individuals who engage in physical activity may require more protein, ranging from 1.2 to 2 grams per kilogram of body weight. To fulfill these requirements, many athletes and active individuals opt for whey protein (WP) supplements to increase their protein intake. The appropriate amount of WP intake for individuals depends on their objectives, current level of physical activity, and body composition. Research suggests that a dosage of 20 to 25 g/day of WP provides the desired benefits, while amounts >40 g/day may lead to adverse effects on the body"[0]
- The rule of thumb is that the ultra-processed food should not account for a too large part of your diet. The protein powder is usually taken as a supplement and in small quantities, as opposed to food like twinkies people can easily overeat on. But try to make protein powder 80% of your protein intake and see how you'll feel in a week.
- It seems their "Voice mode" is just a dictation mode, not like the Voice Mode from e.g. OpenAI. Even their demo[0] just shows a dictation.
I am a bit disappointed, the headline made me think they offer a voice mode similar to OpenAI.
- I'd like to ask the opposite question: why do people prefer command line tools? I tried both and I prefer working in IDE. The main reason is that I don't trust the LLMs too much and I like to see and potentially quickly edit the changes they make. With an IDE, I can iterate much faster than with the command line tool.
I haven't tried Claude Code VS Code extension. Did anyone replaced Cursor with this setup?
- I've been using OpenAI's batch API for some time, then replaced it with Mistral's batch API because it was cheaper (Mistral Small with $0.10 / $0.20 per million tokens was perfect for my use case). This makes me rethink my choice, e.g. Gemini 2.5 Flash-Lite seems to be a better model[0] with only a slight price increase.
- He wanted to be the CEO and merge it with Tesla[0], but the researchers had a problem with him (some had a problem with Altman as well, but that's another story). He did not have any real options since OpenAI was a non-profit then, so he just left. The new book The Optimist[1] about Sam Altman has some more details on this and other OpenAI Game of Thrones, I definitely recommend for those interested.

- If someone wants to begin with Baudelaire, I would recommend his collection Le Spleen de Paris[0] - it's not poetry in its usual sense, but a collection of prose poems. I still remember picking the book randomly at our city library when I was 15 and reading the very first poem, L’ Étranger:
THE STRANGER
"Tell me, whom do you love the most, you enigmatic man? your father, your mother, your sister, or your brother?"
"I have neither father, nor mother, nor sister, nor brother."
"Your friends?"
"There you use a word whose meaning until now has remained to me unknown."
"Your fatherland?"
"I am unaware in what latitude it lies."
"Beauty?"
"I would willingly love her, goddess and immortal."
"Gold?"
"I hate it as you hate God."
"So! Then what do you love, you extraordinary stranger?"
"I love clouds... drifting clouds... there... over there... marvelous clouds!"
The book has been with me ever since, and as I'm getting older and re-read it I always discover new things. After all, there are themes a person has to grow into.
But I can sometimes code until like 4AM. Weird.
