  1. Sorry to be pedantic but if you're clicking the link, YT gets the referer header even without the share id url parameter.
  2. myself

    man, myself needs work

  3. my undergrad econ degree suggests there was more demand than supply
  4. Got here too late so seems like it went viral.

So, it was a really good idea?

  5. I hope you're talking about the original The Jackal. That's a great movie that has fascinated me essentially because of the theme you've identified. A truly motivated, highly-intelligent person could commit horrendous acts without detection. So far, whoever committed this assassination has succeeded; but I suspect, there is simply too much surveillance in 2025 to get away with it.

edit: regarding the surveillance issue, wonder what the retention on google earth/maps logs is for the location of the shooting?

  6. > hiss of communication

Allow me to speculate massively. Hiss sounds more like weak signal acquisition. Perhaps in this case, Mitnick was interfering but not defeating encryption.

  7. You reminded me that one of Brian Wilson's favorite songs was "Be My Baby" by The Ronettes.

  8. > Are there any good out of the box or open source self-hosted Aereo-like services, that let me access OTA broadcasts in another market?

Jellyfin with an HDHomerun is a pretty nice combo for this.

  9. > - Starliner leaving ISS autonomously early September

What shall we make of all of this should it succeed?

  10. > the ability to use StringLike conditions

  11. That's the first time seeing that Gates photo for me. He would've been 14 or 15 years old.
  12. It makes my day whenever eastern Kentucky content shows up on here. It's such a contrast to life in the valley and it seems like our homestate might be setup well for remote work going forward, or is that just the eternal optimist in me?
  13. It's not that deep.
  14. Between Youtube and PirateBay, who do you think has distributed more unauthorized copyrighted works?
  15. Full disclosure: I haven't cut my hair in awhile. It may be influencing my architecture decisions at this point.
  16. That's fascinating to this lay clay tablet thinker. It had never occurred to me that clay tablets were reused. In fact, it nearly fundamentally changes my estimation of them as a long-term durable storage medium.
  17. Any examples of major predictions verified in this way?
  18. That sounds amazing. Are there more details like what sort of ads even?
  19. Anyone able to share the definitive history of the polar bears that visited the office?

  20. > Imagine being asked to work for a week on a project and once completed, being told to delete it without consideration because management irrationally decided to go a different direction before considering your project, you'd be understandably upset even though you were paid to do it.

The compensation is correlated with confusion.

  21. Presumably there is a way to find out which other wireless client is impersonating another in a confined environment like an airplane.

A multicast packet might vary based on physical distance to the imposter?

  22. > The other person will get frustrated and disconnect and reconnect a few times, and finally give up and read a book...

That makes me really reconsider my past struggles with this form of Internet access.

  23. > the, apparently erroneous :), assumption that no glass is brick-proof

    That reminds me of:

    > With sufficient thrust, pigs fly just fine.

    https://www.rfc-editor.org/rfc/rfc1925

  24. > Turns out that the LOS between the wifi dongle and the AP went through the roost, and chickens absorb enough wifi signal to drop it off the net.

That sounds like a chicken motion detection system to me.

  25. Someone at work recently got bit by unexpected YAML parsing a git commit hash that contained a substring which was a valid number in scientific notation (IIRC 5e38031).
  26. > So long as the bill gets paid (and for an absurdly long time, even when it doesn’t), your data is treated as “this cannot be lost under any circumstances.”

Does anyone have experience with unpaid AWS S3 bills? I can imagine the work to delete some buckets is greater than traffic served.

  27. The local stations I watched when I was a child. There are a handful of newscasters still around from when I last lived there 25 years ago. It's a pretty fun way of keeping a pulse of back home.
  28. Big fan of MythTV here and daily user forever now.

Paired with an HDHomerun and Jellyfin, MythTV really gives one a pretty good poor man's Youtube TV with no recurring fees. One of mine runs in a virtual machine in the garage at my family's farm, with a custom script beaming me my childhood local news to enjoy over coffee in the morning.
