Put “HN” in the subject to make sure I see your email

  1. FreeCAD sounds great but in practice it’s sooo slow.

If you are coming from SolidWorks, Fusion360, Inventor, or OnShape, it won’t take long before you start finding that there are a lot of things missing from it.

  2. I don't think HN has ever claimed to be especially innovative.
  3. Which is odd considering how much of X is owned by the Saudis.
  4. How do you evaluate if the DRM is working as intended?
  5. All Tor books (the publisher, not the privacy tool) are DRM free.
  6. The latest version of Amazon's DRM can't be reliably removed by the DeDRM package.

I still use a Kindle eReader (an Oasis) but I now buy books from Kobo because those are easy to strip DRM from.

  7. Why do you think it's different? At first glance it seems more or less the same thing to me.
  8. Maybe, but I think that's probably okay.

You can't launch your boutique credit card and refuse to refund fraudulent charges with the excuse that you are too small to do so.

  9. If the companies are too big to provide reasonable levels of support for their users, then the companies are simply too big.
  10. Cash being more useful wouldn't help you regain access to your photos, music, email, etc... when your account has been deactivated..
  11. What are the best online courses you’ve taken?

On Coursera, I did Andrew Ng’s machine learning course and Dan Boneh’s cryptography course and both were excellent. Time well spent IMHO.

The next thing I want to take is a WinDbg course. Udemy has one that looks pretty good. I should probably also find a modern assembly language course…

  12. Google Translate became very good compared to what came before it. Other stuff is better now and one day we will say the tools of today are trash.
  13. In fairness to the person at the top of this thread, they did add qualifiers like that.
  14. According to Don Norman, attractive things work better. I assume that would include printed matter and signage.
  15. There are people out there bewildered by those of us who have strong operating system preferences. For most users, Windows, MacOS, Linux/Android, and iOS are pretty much the same thing. They let you connect to WiFi, install apps, send email, etc…. They show you icons you can click or double-click to launch an app.
  16. Most of those things weren't very good before AI was applied.

Translation specifically was pretty bad before Google applied machine learning methods to it around 2007 when it became very good almost overnight.

  17. The line is drawn where ever the public puts it.

Generally, the correct spelling of a word is determined by those that use it. Canadians have used 'colour' for a long time. If enough people start using 'color', that will eventually be the correct spelling in Canada.
