  1. Companies don’t have a legal obligation to publicly disclose revenue in many countries, so if you’re selling business insights you’re always on the lookout for indicators that can be used as a proxy to revenue.
  2. In the same vein 4chan.org/b/ used to make every so often "This iw now a Hacker News thread", which were hilarious.

    See: https://desuarchive.org/g/thread/48696148 Thread: https://www.hackerneue.com/item?id=9788317

  3. Chrome?
  4. The cloud-native version of "Nobody gets fired for buying IBM"
  5. I don't think 2 is true: when OpenAI model won a gold medal in the math olympiads, it did so without tools or web search, just pure inference. Such a feat definitely would not have happened with o1.
  6. The people working inside the company may be both judge and party to the issue, it’s not always a bad idea to call in consultants. Do you prefer independent and somewhat misinformed or stakeholder to the issue and knowledgeable?
  7. Apple has RCS, compatible with Android, at least in the EU. You don't get the blue bubble though.
  8. The sun can mean different things to different people. We usually think of it as the physical star, but for some ancient civilizations it may have been seen as a person or a god. Living with these different representations can, in a very real way, shape the reality around you. If you did not have a word for freedom, would as many desire it?
  9. I got the French version and was really confused, since it randomly mentioned autonomous vehicles on the page. Turns out, Age Verification = AV = Autonomous Vehicle.

That's why you do quality control on AI-generated content :^)

  10. Shameless plug about a little game I wrote a few years ago, about guessing which pages exist in the most languages in wikipedia:

  11. High density (20 points per m2) LIDAR view from the French geospatial agency

  12. And if you tell people that quitting smoking, drinking, and walking 10,000 steps a day would make them healthier, that’s true, but it’s not helpful on a national scale—especially for issues where the cost is not only borne by the individual but also by the rest of society.
  13. It really depends on the "use case." Regulators are primarily concerned about grooming, which involves criminals using apps that teenagers frequent.

Also, criminals usually have poor operational security—far from perfect. The seriousness of the offense isn't related to the quality of their opsec.

Regulators and law enforcement are generally rational. They may be short-sighted, but they often have reasonable explanations for things you might dismiss as stupid.

That sucks, CSAM sucks, emotional regulation sucks, and as a society, we don't know how to manage allowing kids online. In fact we don't even know, what we'd like. From a political/policy standpoint, that's the challenge of the next 20 years.

  14. I don’t know why but nerds love typography. I sure do :)

Maybe something about the fact that it’s familiar for people working with computers. It’s approachable (needs a keyboard and some fonts), familiar (we spend our time typing and reading), well defined (it’s a succession of a finite number of shapes that are also well defined, not as Freeform as a drawing).

  15. I think that’s because she’s been victim of a lot of deep fake porn
  16. Fairly uncommon in homes (although I wouldn't go as far as the sibling comment that it's only for very upscale homes—I know plenty of people who are getting equipped). Because the unit has to be outside, there are many historic buildings where you can't install AC. It's less of a problem in other parts of France.

Businesses open to the public and offices almost universally have AC, though, except maybe for mom and pop shops, so you definitely can go to the mall or the movies to get some fresh air.

  17. A rust port to linux of JiTouch
  18. And it’s an awesome dataset! My startup wouldn’t exist in its current form without it (elementdeclencheur.fr)
