  1. Here, person with a 300 IQ who is blind, can you count the letters in this written word? "Well no, bec-" Ahaha, dumbass!
  2. This culture of degrees as attainments is not good. It's supposed to be training for a productive research career but when some unlikely person collects the degree it's treated like a medal. The professor's time was wasted.
  3. Why did endurance cycling evolve? Oh, right, like endurance running, it didn't. I'm a human and I can't run far - unless I decided to train myself in that and then I can. Just as I could train myself to break dance. Did break dancing evolve? The book that created this 'theory' about running is nothing but running 'propaganda'. A meme pushed into the world by exercise addicted people who wanted a post-hoc 'naturalization' for their lifestyle.
  4. Sell family house for 500k, get apartment 250k, 250k to live off.

Sell family house for 1M, get apartment 500k, 500k to live off.

    What am I missing?

  5. Incident, incidents.
  6. I thought you had rules against indulging in mindless entertainments (social media (hn)) and fraternizing with laypeople?
  7. Of course the removal of the curse of existential freedom is the reason for having children. Whether people consciously reason it out or not, it's agony wondering whether every decision is part of 'the right thing', and pure relief when a constraint descends of there being only one thing to do, which is imperative. 'You have to' frees you from the indulgent loneliness of 'You wanted to'. But neither the article or anyone here has stopped to consider whether it's ethical or defensible to bring beings into the world, to suffer, for the sake of easing your confusion and boredom. To me, it's not. Taking on a responsibility is one thing. Creating the problem that you then take responsibility for (your child's need of care), is neutral at best and, arguably, crooked.
  8. please don't do that, especially when presenting something that uses graphs, as entropy on graphs is an actual technical concept that's currently widely used in very hot fields.
  9. It could be a good site, who knows, but completely off-putting that you put fake positive comments from sock puppet accounts. Slimy.
  10. Why don't you put in earplugs? The whole problem with offices for me is its rude to do so. At home no problem. I find if I do it even for a while I feel 'relieved' enough from the sound that I can then happily go back to into the clanking of daytime for a stretch
  11. I have started coming across articles that seem legitimate except for bizarre patois used in the subheadings specifically: "How Long Be The Game?" "What Mean By Corner Kick?" which I'm assuming as an AI summarization artefact
  12. They said that 0.3 degrees of warming is currently hidden from the data by the way cities air haze clouds reflect sunlight to space. When the city haze is cleared up we'll get that 0.3. But this obviously implies that if things get really bad, we can simply invest a relatively small expense popping smoke at spaced intervals over a lot of ocean and cancel a degree or two's worth of warming that way while while decarbonizing. I was hyped for the apocalypse but it's yet another nothing burger.
  13. I keep seeing AI people shoot themselves in the foot with the risible "animations" that are a static pic with the mouth morphing like a deliberately bad flash cartoon would do. After marvelling at still images that are indistinguishable from reality, how could seeing a 2000s morph of one called a moving image not be pure bathos? Why don't you stop? Know your limits!
  14. People just jump to say this like it's a game now. The headline says 'may have found the mechanism'. It's not claiming anything that needs this
  15. yay, burn the books!
  16. This narrative has been questioned as a bit of feel-good manipulation https://www.hackerneue.com/item?id=12993945
  17. Look at the crapsite you copied this text from - it's spam garbage. Please be more discerning when you see 'facts' given online.
  18. >your chances of dying in a car accident are around 1% each year

That's very obviously wrong since that would mean the road toll for my city of 400k would be 4000/year and it's actually 12/year

  19. It was screwed into a floating inner liner cylinder which you can see in any video is separated from the hull. Get the facts straight before sounding off with gleeful incredulity.
  20. there is such a thing as normalNews which will cover this completely
  21. Paying "power users" is a heinous idea. The reddit karma farmers posting fake stories and known-approved thoughts are bad as it is. Imagine if you had the pull of actual money for crafting on-message bullshit you know a community will eat up. All genuine contributions that are purely from passion go out the window
  22. However, while it's mundane knowledge now that hives can do optimizations etc. collectively, the point of the article is, no, individual bees are intelligent.
  23. >I get a little creeped out

Maybe you already know, but this 'it's all just a train of mechanical compulsions, there's nobody in here' is the very thing that meditation is intended to allow you to realize, it's the 'liberating insight'. The problem with just reaching it on your own is you don't get the other part, the viewpoint about the world that build the case that this is a good thing, a great thing (believing there is someone there is the cause of all the dissatisfaction you ever feel). So you could check into that if you want - ajahn brahm or suchlike

  24. Bing chat is GPT-4. People in general might not keep track of that but we're talking about people who think they have something worth saying about LLMs. Btw if you hop onto Bing to try GPT-4 just be aware you'll have to talk it out of web searching, or you'll get a response that's crippled by having to 'ground' itself in the web's current sludge of fake chum pages
  25. the washing machine with it was made in the 1990s
  26. This article for its own purposes talks about teachers but the main even in the country at the moment is the housing cost crisis currently affecting everyone, whether there is actually some special short changing of teachers I don't know but it is not evidenced by the 'can't afford to live in xyz' illustration, because currently you could write some variation of that about a swath of sectors.
  27. To me it is clear why. Imagine someone told you "answer immediately, top of your head: what's the best seasoning?". You'd just blurt out whatever specific you associated with pleasing seasoning (and that would be a good answer). Now imagine someone said "answer immediately, off the top of your head, but without offending any culture, gender, without a cultural bias, and without being presumptuous of the listener's socio-economic status (and if you fail one of these, someone dies) what's the best seasoning?" Even without the way that is going to lead to all sorts of compromising and second guessing in the answer space, simply only a fraction now of your brain is left to associate about the question due to just holding all that other stuff in there.
  28. So it's not even from OpenAI, it's a fishing scam
