  1. If you enjoy your job your employer is able to exploit you more?
  2. I thought its decline was due to Perl's confusing syntax. That's what caused me to move away from it anyway.
  3. I wonder if they could test this by comparing blood pressures of older folks in Australia with those in other countries since I hear they really like beetroot there :)
  4. Yes, other states have it you can Google for a list.
  5. Thanks, was scratching my head and thinking that a baby's side isn't always peaceful.
  6. I'd guess maybe 10-20% improvement for me.
  7. Late 50's and still enjoying it. Are there some frustrating days? Sure. But overall it's fine and is relatively well paid. It helps to have one or two co-workers that you get along with and can joke with. At this age you get random aches and pains that keep popping up which make me appreciate my desk job.
  8. Where is the evidence that we're in hyperinflation?
  9. I've been interested to see some small (1 acre-ish) solar panel installations popping up on local farmland near me in Northwest Indiana. I'm a bit surprised because although we get quite a few sunny days it's nowhere near Colorado levels of sun. So I guess the economics must be getting to the point where it's either profitable now or is expected to be profitable soon.
  10. That is a very weird and troubling article.
  11. I've also noticed that they give you a very short time to explain your problem and symptoms and it's not unusual for them to be misinterpreted and/or misunderstood. Sometimes assumptions are made and the doctor gets an incorrect picture in their head. It's a bit like when someone gets interviewed for a newspaper story and when the story is published it has obvious errors.
  12. I get the impression that Amtrak is itself a tourist attraction, as opposed to a practical means of transportation.
  13. Just wanted to say thank you and farewell. You are in good hands with hospice.
  14. That's the one reservation I have about reading. When you're reading you aren't living, in a sense.
  15. Kurt Vonnegut wrote something similar about doing art of any kind.
  16. This might be the exception that proves the rule but I used to work for an outfit that made a school website product (SaaS) and they seemed to be making plenty of money.
  17. What about the missing comma at the end of the first line? :)
  18. Interesting - I love the sound of birds and can go right back to sleep when they are chirping outside and I have the window open. Road noise on the other hand...
  19. This is nice but I think it's small potatoes compared to what could be achieved economically by decoupling healthcare from employment.
  20. You've been lucky. My sister in law and my wife's best friend were both killed in car accidents (not as pedestrians) in the US.
  21. Also see: Branston Pickle
  22. As of about 5 years ago this started happening to me for some reason. I can confirm what another poster said - it comes as quite a shock the first time ! It happens to me about once a year now and it's painless but weird. I've never suffered from conventional (painful) migraines.
  23. It's very interesting. I think you have to book ahead for a tour these days.
  24. I find myself wondering, how much collective time is being lost these days to authentication? I mean, if you have to authenticate using your phone, you have to dig it out of your pocket, sign into the phone, read the text message or use the authenticator app, type in the code...
  25. Noel Philips' recent youtube video about his cross country Greyhound trip gives a realistic view of Greyhound. It's not at all flattering.
  26. There's also a large herd (1300+) at Custer State Park in South Dakota.
  27. If sitting for long periods is bad what about lying in bed for long periods (e.g. sleeping)? It's difficult to reconcile the findings that sleeping is great for the body and mind (essential actually) but sitting is terrible.
  28. Personally I like the ability to choose where I work (trust/freedom).
