  1. Sorry if this was a joke, but just in case- PTA = plain text accounting
  2. The "You're not x. You're y." format reads as AI generated to me. I know that seeing AI syntax behind every corner is a problem that is only going to get worse and that I need to shift my mindset; nevertheless, it tinged how I reacted to the entire article.
  3. Keep in mind that under such a system, corporations would have a financial incentive to wait just a bit longer to do an adaptation
  4. I've been waiting for solutions that integrate into the artistic process instead of replacing it. Right now a lot of the focus is on generating a complete image, but if I was in photoshop (or another editor) and could use AI tooling to create layers and other modifications that fit into a workflow, that would help with consistency and productivity.

I haven't seen the latest from adobe over the last three months, but last I saw the firefly engine was still focused on "magically" creating complete elements.

  5. I agree that screenshots of text that are cut off from essential context are enough to make me pull my hair out, it creates so much extra work— but the modern feature of automatic text recognition in screenshots and images that allows for copy and paste has been incredible. Along with indexing that allows it to be searched, regular screenshots have become one of the most robust and future proof ways for me to preserve context from my workspace. When I look back into archived screenshots it helps me to recapture all kinds of things that I wouldn’t have thought to explicitly record.
  6. Perverse incentives is right. Like having a fiercely loyal Superfan. Maybe it sheds some light on behavior among celebrities, actually. It makes sense that we want validation, and that sometimes hearing grounded feedback is bitter medicine - but if we're allowed to choose the option that always endorses our actions then we're on a divisive path.
  7. Yep this seems like it makes a lot of sense— and adding on, picking a measurement means that all of them can be the same (consistency, as you said)- having variation in the same row would look bad from a distance
  8. I've been looking for good examples of handbooks and staff materials that do the job well, this one seems a little heavy on the philosophy - I can see why it's been discussed as more of a recruitment tool. Anyone who has favorite examples of handbooks to link, I'd love to check them out.
  9. My first acquaintance with Replit was the services they were building for teachers and schools to teach coding and support the high school level with making environments available and shareable. They had a great platform in place but they took the whole thing down as part of their pivot.
  10. As I read your reply, I couldn’t help but think of the number of spontaneous photos I’ve been able to capture over the last decade because a camera is now built into my phone and available wherever I am. I still carry my camera a lot of the time, and for those who keep missing photos that depend on an instant shutter perhaps that would be a good move— but it’s hard to see how the effort to integrate a camera into phones is acting as a limit instead of expanding one
  11. It’s hard to tell from your comment whether you mean the lunch debt is the problem, or the kids are the problem.
  12. Isn’t it like… week 2?
  13. For the moment the displacement is asymmetrical; AI replacing employees, but not AI replacing consumers. If AI causes mass unemployment, the pool of consumers (profit to companies) will shrink. I wonder what the ripple effects of that will be.
  14. This source [0] says 81 school shootings in the US as of 12/6/24, so while not quite several times per week on average, it's within the margin of error.

  15. Yes, New York State is considering some form of cell phone restrictions in schools from the State level and there's substantial push back from parents who object that they need their kids to have a cell phone for safety reasons like a school shooting.
  16. Glad to see DCC mentioned, one of my favorite things to do is describe the initial concept to someone and then see them experience the first few chapters and get hooked
  17. Made a button to "Make it an ASCII Map!" showing relationships between concepts, had a lot of fun. Nice one!
  18. Especially primed by all the lord of the rings movies, for example; I could see the studio taking all the archived footage, camera angles, all the extra data that was generated in the creation of the films and feeding that into something like this model to create all kinds of interesting additional material.
  19. This is a great tool!
  20. I started experimenting yesterday and I was delighted that the templater strings I set up at my computer were functioning on my phone. I’m excited about it because the lack of good system wide text expansion on the phone has been frustrating for me, and it looks like using obsidian will be a way to define pretty complex templates and be able to create and edit notes on my phone using them.
  21. Right, yes, tone aside that’s very helpful- at first I didn’t understand the implication of the blog post for implementing customer hostile solutions, but you’ve helped me understand it now.
  22. Could you expand on this?
  23. Is there any feature rich open source option for MacOS? I use and enjoy free shot on windows but I’ve struggled to find good options for the mac
  24. My interpretation is that this change is the result of the "Recall" feature on Windows which captures the activity on the machine... does the timing line up for that to be plausible?
  25. That’s some really nice intellectual property they have there.

Be a shame if someone thought about it.

  26. When teachers are also parents how will schools staff classes on day five?

Work week length might be an all or nothing proposition.

  27. Not OP, but STEM = Science, Technology, Engineering, Math; so on its face it does not include social sciences or humanities
  28. It’s hard to imagine Apple pursuing a strategy that would surrender control of so much of the end user experience
