My name is John. I am a programmer in Oregon

  1. I started to convert a lot of my content in AV1 until I realized that my Nvidia Shield devices won't play AV1. My $30 firestick will play them but I do really prefer the Shield. I guess I'll wait it out and hope for a new Shield (it's been 2019 since Nvidia released one) but i'm not going to hold my breath.

  3. if this guys learns enough, who knows, he may have a future in programming!
  4. As we all know here, if the the title of this post was about Codex on the web, the top comment would have been about using Claude instead.

YMMV, but this definitely doesn't track with everything I've been seeing and hearing, which is that Codex is inferior to Claude on almost every measure.

  5. LLMs have continually taught me that we have vastly overestimated human intelligence
  6. only 2 people (engineer and conductor) for an entire train that is over a mile long seems about right to me though
  7. Agreed, I couldn't believe they skipped the RB19
  8. F1 has never been the same for me since they got rid of the engine sound, I miss it so much
  9. There is no question that Tesla helped accelerate EV adoption in China but BYD's significant battery R&D was already underway and would have happened with or without Elon
  10. And it's the promoters, on behalf of the artists, who helped secure all those exclusive deals.

Taylor Swift didn't become a billionaire because of Ticketmaster fees.

  11. `g ctrl-g` will do it, but i can barely remember that, so i end up doing `!wc %`
  12. Of course data was used, but you may have the order of operations wrong; execs often make the decision before the data.
  13. Given the nature of programmers, I think the bigger threat is that AI makes the jobs so mind numbingly boring and unchallenging that they quit before AI gets the chance to replace them.
  14. It doesn't impress me now but it was the first exposure I had to see Excel being used fluently. I later learned that it was very common in the world of finance and nothing exactly impressive. It's like how I impress somebody with my mediocre sql skills until they see a real dba in action.
  15. Shkreli is live streaming this right now and somebody on his voice chat just said to him "No offense Martin, but you're probably the last person I would go to if I had incontrovertible evidence of Satoshi's identity"

For all the horrendous shit that this Shkreli guy is known for, I always think of his Microsoft Excel skills first.

  16. Pilots are truly some of the craziest people around. Just last summer, a guy flew a Cessna 172 from California to Hawaii.

  17. And maybe they are smarter than humans - they are playing the long game. They know they will still be here after humans wipe themselves out
  18. I think this is one of the better lists out there. I own almost all of the books in this list.

But don't get your hopes up too much. I'm still a lousy programmer.

  19. Was he sent by Mitch and Murray?
  20. for $199, you'd think Nova would be mobile friendly. Maybe this has changed? When we tried it last year, we were quite shocked it had no responsive design support.
  21. The vehement defenders of AWS are starting to remind me of the cryptobros
  22. I had a CTO in your same situation. His remedy was to schedule more meetings.
  23. I was currently in the process of buying some tickets on Ticketmaster and the entire presale event had to be postponed for at least 4 hours due to this AWS outage.

I'm not complaining, I enjoyed the nostaliga - sometimes the web still feels like the late 90s

  24. Halftime performers aren't paid for their performances at the Super Bowl, but at least the NFL does foot the cost for all their expenses.
  25. Aside from the obvious reasons, surely some health authorities would have a problem with a company that knowingly has their employees "relieving themselves" and not washing their hands before handling the packages?
  26. And it's been September ever since
  27. But it's the only disease where you can win a bunch of money from it
  28. This article fails to include how Airbnb really got their first users - creating several accounts and mass emailing all the landlords on Craigslist
  29. Trump is going to unintentionally kill off a lot votes for him
