I wish to engage in discourse with good faith and in line with the excellent HN guidelines. If you downvote me, flag me, etc, I would appreciate an explanation as to why. Cheers!

  1. Some are installed on private property, and supply data to the property owner. Some are installed on public property, and supply data to the government.
  2. Use a different airline, the free market will take care of the rest!
  3. GIFs or screenshots from this are ubiquitous in meme culture in areas of the net I frequent. There's one I'm thinking of where the cat looks suspiciously at the camera.
  4. If you are in the US, generic breakfast cereals have come a long way. They come in larger boxes or bags and are basically identical. In the past they didn't have Cinnamon Toast Crunch figured out but there's been some kind of a breakthrough and they're a great copy now. Amazingly in some feat of copyright the one I now buy is called Cinnamon Crunch.
  5. Someone at Amazon hilariously uploaded a job description that was filtered through this extension:

    https://www.hackerneue.com/item?id=28869819

    > Are you interested in building hyper-scale database services in my butt?

  6. I've tried a few times to switch to Kea in PFsense but it crashes my network fiercely.
  7. It's a constellation of tools that have the suffix "arr" - a winking nod to what a stereotypical pirate says, because they are commonly used for media piracy. Some examples are Radarr, Sonarr and Prowlarr, but there's lots of other ones. They all kind of fit together nicely into a stack that can be used to self host your own automatic media downloading and streaming platform.
  8. There is in Atlanta. An informal system of cash only mini buses without fixed routes and a focus on Spanish language.
  9. I know of an elevator that is also a ticketed access point to a stadium so the elevator operator also scans tickets and gives out wristbands. Very nice for wheeled accessibility.
  10. I love the game and I'm nostalgic for when games were extremely difficult but for many the best way to experience Grim Fandango without such frustration might be by watching a commentary-free playthrough on youtube. I don't feel viewing the work is meaningfully diminished by not being the button clicker. Once one is familiar with the work there is a great developer commentary that is available on youtube also.
  11. One issue with gravelmap in my area is that some people don't post the best routes so they don't get crowded...
  12. I was hoping for a zany “trapped stress” material science explanation but this did not come to pass.
  13. Clearly the solution is either UUIDs for every product or Fulfilment By Amazon style randomly generated brand names like UGRTRPY.
  14. > The move (and forced relocation of employees) was likely a way to force attrition, since it was followed fairly quickly with layoffs elsewhere.

You might expand the full title to "After move interpreted by experts as likely a way to force attrition" to explain the relevance :)

  15. It's also how Scotland ended up harnessing their wind power, much to the consternation of one American capitalist...
  16. Start of the unix epoch obviously.

I also like the ISO standardization of shipping containers explanation.

  17. I didn't notice a difference personally during a long unemployment stint. Not being employed lends a lot of free time to focus on self development and to be an interesting person which is beneficial to dating. Also, an unemployed partner can do a lot of cooking and cleaning. I used large chunks of my time to plan and create elaborate meals for working partners and keep co-living spaces spotless and organized. This is substantially more challenging for me personally to do with full time employment.
  18. This doesn't address your (valid) systemic concerns, but on efficiency the way I like to use links like this is by adding them to a queue for later, then, if I have an opportunity to play them while doing the dishes or commuting or just feeling like watching a television I play them back, usually at higher speed of playback than 1.0. If I'm just sitting on the couch actively watching I'll read ahead in the transcript and skip ahead if I feel like it.
  19. The article explains why they made the decision not to do a traditional dog-bone interchange with two circular roundabouts. Namely, there were right of way limitations and a need to incorporate heavy farm trucks making a left turn. So, they ended up with basically 1.5 roundabouts which represents a simplification over the dog bone.
  20. I'm busy so I didn't read the paper - is there a reason to use neosporin instead of petroleum jelly? In addition to your concern, many people are actively allergic to the ingredients in neosporin.
