  1. "The justice system works swiftly in the future now that they've abolished all lawyers."

    -Doc Brown

  2. Everything is now re-consolidated under different media companies now. Instead of Ted Turner we have Larry Ellison, and Netflix, and Disney.

So I think the biggest question is, what form of entertainment will eventually supplant streaming services? Whatever it is (or will be) will almost certainly be disregarded by most people.

  3. Not in all situations. I'm pretty sure I can't do it when the SVG file is applied as a background image.
  4. I've used embedded SVG images in CSS encoded as base64, and I'm not ashamed. In general, I really wish I could apply page styles and CSS3 variables to the internal CSS of SVG files. I'm sure there's a good reason why this context isn't shared, but it would be cool and useful to dynamically change the style of SVG files.

If I'm hand coding a page or writing a stylesheet, it's convenient to be able to embed things. Often, I'll embed a style tag until it grows large enough to be worthy of its own file. The same goes for scripts; it's useful to have the option if you're quickly prototyping something.

  5. Why is this so horrible. Put more resources in the hands of the average person. They will get pumped right back into the economy. If people have money to spend, they can buy more things, including goods and services from gigantic tax-dodging mega-corporations.

Gigantic mega-corporations do enjoy increased growth and higher sales, don't they? Or am I mistaken?

  6. I'm a younger millennial. I'm always seeing homeless people in my city and it's an issue that I think about on a daily basis. Couldn't we have spent the money on homeless shelters and food and other things? So many people are in poverty, they can't afford basic necessities. The world is shitty.

Yes, I know it's all capital from VC firms and investment firms and other private sources, but it's still capital. It should be spent on meeting people's basic human needs, not GPU power.

Yeah, the world is shitty, and resources aren't allocated ideally. Must it be so?

  7. When did that happen? Do you have a link to the exact CD image you used?
  8. I have an iMac G4 1.25 GHz. Originally, it was a 1GHz, but I swapped out the motherboard for a later model. For a while I've been wondering if I would had been better off with an earlier motherboard capable of booting OS 9 natively. Compared with using OS X's classic mode, this would omit the overhead of running a whole other OS and leave me with more resources to run OS 9 apps and games. I don't get a whole lot of use out of the earlier OS X software that I have on there...

Maybe in the future I won't have to make that choice! I'd much rather dual boot OS 9 off a different partition, but that hasn't been supported on the 1-1.25GHz models (Thanks Steve...) and no one has gotten it working properly. Maybe now it will be possible! A man can dream...

  9. I'm sure they'll have no issues raising the funds. If they run into trouble, they can always ask ChatGPT for advice.
  10. Generally speaking, HTML doesn't have the constructs necessary to actually compute things. There's no way to declare variables, and there are no conditionals, jumping, or mathematical operations. All you can do is specify a fixed set of page elements.

Embedded JS within HTML doesn't count here, as that's essentially no different than a linked script file.

To be fair, there are some exceptions to this; there are some very hacky and convoluted ways you might be able to get some programmatic behavior out of pure HTML (I remember hearing about a weird example in part of Wikipedia's codebase).

HTML literally means hypertext markup language. It's more like TeX or Markdown, in that it's used to store and represent data, not to manipulate it.

  11. That's where I'm coming from.
  12. Because you can actually parameterize things. It's wonderful!
  13. I can't argue with this.

Then again, writing stylesheets is still one of those things where, if you're not careful, everything spirals out of control. Often I'll make changes and wonder why nothing's happening and realize something was overridden by another rule somewhere, or I was mixing up two properties, or some other silly thing...

I also find it's a bit awkward to write var(--foo) every time... I wish I could just write --foo... I suppose there's a grammar issue somewhere, or maybe it would have increased the complexity of implementations of CSS.

  14. I've just been calling them that anyway since I found out they existed.

Also, this guy is calling HTML a programming language. Make of that what you will...

  15. One thing I appreciate about Windows is (in my experience at least) you almost never have to go into the command line to change a weird setting. There's always a toggle in the GUI somewhere. I mean, I'll use the command line if I have to... I just like the fact that the supported options are enumerated visually; I don't have to worry I'll break something. Also, I can peruse through a place like the group policy editor to find settings I would have otherwise never considered changing.
  16. Are you sure that isn't the real HN, and this website isn't the simulation? Are you guys even real? Am I?
  17. Oh... :/ I guess when I read that I interpreted it as being directed towards people switching from macOS to Gnome. I haven't booted into a system running Gnome in a while...
  18. That's literally the default behavior in macOS, with some exceptions.
  19. This is great, but I'd rather they make Windows 11 open-source instead.
  20. The tone of the original post was inflammatory for sure. And there are certainly some things that could be said about Eric's post; he probably shouldn't have posted those messages out of context.

I'm not a Pebble user, so I don't know how the app install process works, but can't Core just create their own store from scratch, not based on the existing app catalogue, and have that coexist as an alternative option to Rebble? Then users who want access to that extensive back catalogue can use Rebble's store. Let developers and users pick the stores they want to publish to and download from, respectively.

Given that Core is a commercial enterprise, it doesn't seem appropriate for them to rely on apps that were scraped from the original Pebble store. Core is a separate commercial entity from the original Pebble, and doesn't inherit the relationships between original Pebble and the developers which published to their store. By creating a store from scratch, Core can reestablish each of those relationships one by one. That would go a long way towards helping Core build back whatever trust they may have lost (it seems some users are still bitter about the original closure of Pebble, and I don't blame them). Otherwise, what you have is a commercial entity profiting off of a bunch of applications for which they don't own the right to distribute.

As a developer myself, I might be ok with my app being archived due to an emergency situation... but having that app be republished by a commercial entity is a red line.

I don't have an ethical problem with the back catalogue existing, but it should be hosted by a non-profit. Core can position it's store as an place for new, or updated apps that are being actively maintained by developers, which is definitely a selling point. Rebble can position it's store as a back catalogue of apps that existed on the original pebble, offered on an as-is basis. Which is also a selling point, because who knows what great gems you might find in there...

  21. While minting this currency the government continues to nickel and dime the American people.
  22. Like many, I was disappointed this wasn't a new iPhone mini.

$30 for a pack of six iPod socks always seemed like a horrible value to me in the mid-2000s. I'm not denying they were fun and whimsical, but as cases, they didn't protect your iPod or allow you to use it while inside them. It felt like a rip-off two decades ago, and these are 30-46 times more expensive per-sock.

I know Apple does things like this to position themselves as a luxury brand and as a shareholder I still do not buy the idea stunts like these are what's best for the company. At best, a small segment of the target demographic will see this as a curiosity at the cost of further damage to Apple's reputation. People will see this as further proof Apple is more concerned with products and services which rip off their customers and developers, as opposed to providing real value.

I will be the first to welcome Apple bringing back some semblance of fun and whimsy into their product line-up, and this is not the way to do it.

  24. I'm Andrew, an HCI-focused software engineer looking for my next full-time role. I spent a lot of time recently working independently on a web OS project called "LisaGUI" (https://lisagui.com) that recreates the Apple Lisa's UI from scratch in JS.

Ideally, I'd like a role that will let me combine programming with my deep background in art and design.

      Location: Philadelphia, PA, USA
Remote: Yes; also open to in-person or hybrid roles.
      Willing to relocate: Yes.
      Technologies: JS, HTML/CSS, C++, Java, Python. Rust-curious.
