  1. I think the key part here is the bootstrapping phase. You may not use a specific English word every week, but maybe you use it every 2-3 months. SRS is great for getting information to these different thresholds!
  2. As someone who has used spaced repetition extensively I will just provide a few insights that might be helpful:

    1. Decide on what's important. Just because you learn something doesn't mean that it should be logged to the system. I used to log a lot of minor details (like niche method signatures or command flags to the system). If you make cards for every detail like this then you will be trapped reviewing 100s of cards daily that you likely never use.

    2. For the cards you deem are important, make sure you understand the concept. This often means making 2-5 cards for the concept that test your understanding from different angles (definition, pros, cons, how would I explain this to someone else, etc...). This helps to cement the concept at a foundational level.

    3. Try to move from the existing flashcards to 2nd order flashcards or pure application after the first couple reviews. So your foundational cards are now set to review in 6 months or 1 year. At this timescale if you prioritized what was important and made sure that you understood the foundational concepts, then usually simply doing things related to the concepts will be the reviews (and sorry to say but if in 1 year you get a card related to what you are doing, but never used, chances are it probably wasn't that important). In addition to doing, you can also create 2nd order flashcards (which might compare 2 concepts). These types of cards test the foundational knowledge indirectly, and are helpful for higher order thinking.

In conclusion, I think spaced repetition is a very effective tool for efficient learning (especially in the first 60 days or so after learning something). I think the major pitfall is not prioritizing what cards get made and being stuck in review hell.

  3. I think a lot of it is: feels good to think that you're smarter than most than to acknowledge the reality that you're probably not.

My intuition is that this type of thinking is becoming more and more entrenched in American culture. I think by the time the culture as a whole wakes up, things will be significantly worse and many of the people who tried to prevent it will have been pushed out or willfully left.

  4. I think a good litmus test for a lot of behaviors is: "is this behavior serving me, or am I serving it?"
  5. What has been most reliable for me has been instead of going from bad habit A to good habit Z, I just replace A with the easiest alternative that is less bad than A.

Obviously, this means going from A to Z can take years instead of weeks. Though, from my own personal experience and from what I see of others, trying to go too quickly from A to Z just results in whiplash and irractic behavior--where I have seen it work is when there is an existential crisis demanding that the behavior change.

  6. 2nd this. Already getting weirdos posting pictures of two children and asking "this" or "this"...
  7. Just children? I've had to block social media for myself because of how addictive it was / how much time I was wasting.

I will say though, if you are trying to watch videos more from an educational perspective then it can be useful. Although, I would advise getting an LLM summary of the video, and then speed reading the summary in order to determine if their is any useful content in there.

  8. I have had the exact opposite experience. Lived with a landlord for a year (he inherited the property as part of a trust), and he was the nicest guy whenever it came time to sign a lease or extension, but as soon as the paperwork was signed he was a jackass to most tenants. It also didn't help that he didn't have a job, and was attempting to pay for all of his living expenses using money from the rent (which led to him trying to nickel and dime the tenants for everything).

My experience with professional companies has been very good. The managers aren't trying to micromanage the tenants, and as long as you're not causing problems they are usually quite reasonable if anythings comes up.

  9. I guess I'm just talking about the movement in the last 10 years or so (I'm not old enough to remember much before that :D). I think the left had a bigger movement left in the Obama years and the right definitely had a bigger movement in the Trump years. Actually now that I think about it - if you're talking talking strictly about the politicians then I do agree that the right has shifted more (almost entirely due to Trump's presidency imo). However, I'm not sure that voters as a whole have shifted as much.

I'v lived in Texas, Minnesota and California (all within the past 10 years), and honestly none of them have lived up to their stereotypes in the media (with maybe the exception of the distrust between the police and black communities in Minnesota).

Sure California is noticeably more left and Texas is noticeably more right, but the people you see on the news are always the right or left most few percent. I think most people in both parties still fall somewhere in the middle (even if the political representatives don't)

Personally I'm a centrist and I'm not really too concerned with right-leaning politics - the reason being is that I think the party produces a lot of noise, but there isn't generally much substance behind it. I usually check right-leaning media just to see what the left-leaning media isn't talking about. Most of it I find to be bs, but sometimes it's worth exploring more.

On the other hand I find the left-leaning media more reliable, however, I also disapprove of the 'holier than thou' mentality behavior that some people have. I think this creates a lot of superficial communication where people fear they can't voice a strong opinion without offending others or being ostracized. I'm also concerned about the left's ability to persuade what I believe is a more educated audience with subtle biased reporting (i.e. smart people trust what they believe is a reliable source so much that they don't question biased conclusions). I also don't think that the left media's message to marginalized groups is that beneficial to those groups - I think at some point it becomes toxic empathy and leads to people have a 'victim' mindset (but I suppose you have to try to appeal to your constituents somehow :/ )

Anyways so far from what I've seen from Elon he seems to fall somewhere in line with that (i.e. occasionally trolling both sides, and never really falling in line with one side or another). I think that his recent actions definitely make it look like he falls inline more with the right (especially in regards to his trolling), but I think that might also have to do with the fact that since the takeover he has been getting deliberately attacked by the left msm. I'd prefer to seem him stabilize and drift back more to the left, but I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

  10. My gut feeling (as a U.S resident) is that there has been a shift on both sides, but the overall country has moved more towards the left (so the shift on the right has maybe looked more extreme). I also think the overall media has become less trustworthy/more biased in their reporting so if you follow most western msm (which I believe is primarily left leaning) then even some right-center people can begin to look like strictly right (as I believe Elon is being made out to be).

My impression of Elon is that he just doesn't really like the left's 'holier than thou' political correctness (I don't think this meshes well with his corporate personality).

  11. I'm curious where people see Musk in terms of his politics. I see him as center/right-center (U.S) with the occasional right troll post.

The part that I don't like about him taking over Twitter is this: When he initially took over I was under the impression that he wanted to promote a free-speech platform that is primarily designed for thoughtful dialogue between people. However, I'm not sure the platform will trend towards this when he has so many troll posts (given his influence on the platform).

I think that given its current trajectory the platform in a few months will consist of primarily right-leaning individuals, and far-left individuals who feel it is their duty to constantly debate the right.

  12. I doubt the policy covers one-offs like this - I'm guessing it's more for continuous tracking.
  13. Common sense says that this policy was not put in place to stop one-off photos of individuals, but to reasonably prevent individuals/groups from continuously tracking someone in realtime and broadcasting that information out to others.

It will be interesting to see how it is enforced though.

  14. And it still is. It's just not nearly as accessible or overtly obvious as it once was.

I'm not sure if this would have happened if the account wasn't given extra attention in the media in recent weeks. Prior to an article 2 weeks ago, I never even knew that this information was publicly accessible, and now I know if I want to try to figure out where Musk, Gates, Zuckerberg, or other public figures might be, I can check out the author's website.

Now the main site will probably even gain more visibility which will also expose other individuals personal jets. Like I said before, it will be interesting to see what impact this will have elsewhere.

  15. Yeah honestly this is my biggest issue with public figures on social media. Without a second thought they can make such claims about anyone, and all of a sudden that person is receiving dozens of death threats from the crazies of the world.
  16. I'm kind of curious what people are most upset about here? 1. They just don't like Elon? 2. They are upset that despite Elon claiming to be a "free speech absolutist" that he is now suspending accounts posting public information? (hypocrisy) 3. They are free speech absolutists themselves and object to this censorship? 4. Something else?

Personally, depending on how often Elon is using this plane - I could see this as a form of doxxing (although not strictly). I think the publicity that the account has been receiving recently is probably why it got suspended. It will be interesting to see whether any other legal or social policy is created related to this issue.

  17. walls are boring :)~
  18. In relation to RTS games, I think it's a combination of people are largely satisfied with what we have now combined with the fact that MOBAs, FPS, and RTS are probably more appealing to the average gamer.

That being said AoE2 is an awesome game :)

  19. Curious what others think the primary reasons are for this? I'm thinking that it's possible that a majority of their workforce is still working remote, and if you don't turn off system access prior to termination then people might be more likely to do nefarious things (compared to if they were terminated in office?)
  20. ;TLDR: Anecdotally, I've found it easier to lose weight / harder to sustain weight after a few months of consistent exercise.

Mostly unrelated to this article and perhaps naive, but I found it very difficult to gain weight (and even sustain my weight) about 2 months after starting a 5/6 day cardio routine.

I started the routine walking at ~20 minute mile pace (3 mph) and just incrementing the speed by 0.1 mph each session. At the 2 month mark I was ~8 minute mile (so about 7-8 miles a day).

At this point I was probably burning an additional 750-1k calories a day from the running alone.

Combined with a slightly less calorie dense diet and I was basically force feeding myself to try and maintain my weight.

Background: Late 20s 5'11" Male ~180 lbs (obviously a more ideal situation)

  21. A few things I have found work well for maintaining energy levels and maximizing productivity levels throughout the day.

    1. Only eat foods high in carbohydrates around the time you exercise. (Reduce carbohydrates on days that you don't exercise)

    2. Workout in the morning or afternoon (ideally afternoon). (Working out at night will disrupt sleep and I have found that working out in the morning slightly decreases energy levels in the afternoon compared to working out in the afternoon.)

    3. Avoid eating 6+ hours before going to bed.

    4. Try to do some light exercise (walking/stretching) after you eat.

    5. Make sure you're consistently drinking water throughout the day (a little bit less around the times you eat).

    6. Only go to bed when you're like 8+/10 tired (time asleep doesn't matter much if the quality is slow)

    7. Avoid screen time at least 1 hour before bed (this is basically a must to achieving 6...)

    8. Wake up (get up) when you wake up relatively alert or when you have to get up. If you always stay in bed until you have to get up then you're probably not aligning your waking time with your sleep cycle which means you'll be more tired throughout the rest of the day

There are actually a lot of other things that I think help as well (diet, meditation, etc...) but I didn't want to make this post any longer than it is.

Lastly, I just wanted to say that having sleep aligned is SO important because it improves our energy/emotional state which ultimately assists us with other productive activities. (it's really a productivity multiplier)

  22. I've always feel like I get my best quality sleep when I go to bed extremely tired.
  23. Honestly, it's a big conception that success in RTS games rely on high APM. Great strategy and macro will get you to the 99th percentile in most rts games. I notice that a lot of players that are in the lower percentiles are those who focus more on trying to improve APM rather than strategy or macro.
