  1. Fun to be on call December 24th.
  2. Testing code is usually testing your code not that third party contract changed.

You make a lot of assumption about contract change which in reality should rarely happen.

  3. I mean 300TB is nothing for a streaming service, like it woudn't even show on a dashboard. They probably did that over weeks which is invisible.
  4. That argument does not hold when there is aws serverless pg available, which cost almost nothing for low traffic and is vastly superior to self hosting regarding observability, security, integration, backup ect...

There is no reason to self manage pg for dev / environnement.

    https://aws.amazon.com/rds/aurora/serverless/

  5. Not sure what's going on with the landing page but it's CPU / GPU heavy.
  6. It's a userspace anti cheat so it's not a problem.
  7. Some of them were not expensive but it was not convenient at all.
  8. I don't think there is a modern database that have the safest options all turned on by default. For instance the default transaction model for PG is read commited not serializable

One of the most used DB in the world is Redis, and by default they fsync every seconds not every operations.

  9. NATS allows you to fsync every calls, it's not just the default value.
  10. "PostgreSQL used fsync incorrectly for 20 years"

    https://archive.fosdem.org/2019/schedule/event/postgresql_fs...

It did not prevent people from using it. You won't find a database that has the perfect durability, ease of use, performance ect.. It's all about tradeoffs.

  11. Can't this be done at runtime? Like the underlying calls can black list hardware address on read/write faults?
  12. The golden age of RPGs with Bioware.
  13. I missed a *not
  14. I always found wsl to be a hack and not a true Linux distro, fake pid 1 not really starting or shutting down ect... Even the docker integration is really odd. I know it was fixed with wsl2 but wsl1 had terrible i/o performance.
  15. This is not how it works, most games that take cheating seriously already have a gameserver where most of the gameplay logic happen.

Doing everything server side does prevent cheating.

  16. THis is a PoC not backed by a reliable etcd replacement.
  17. If you have access to the local machine no language will save you.
  18. How do you know where it comes from, if they use UDP and change the src of the packets.
  19. Because it's not technicaly possible, I mean we're on HN, we all know how internet works.
