  1. Nice! I normally just listen to a Tony Anderson album on repeat :)
  2. Ugh more transpilers.

I think low_type is a much more elegant solution: https://github.com/low-rb/low_type

  3. There's no need to compare to Lua directly, there many similar languages. Notably TCL, or more recently Rhai for Rust.
  4. > I think a lot of rust rewrites have this benefit

I think Rust itself has this benefit

  5. I am not prohibiting anyone from doing anything. I am just saying I don't think people should criticize pricing as if they're forced to buy it.
  6. I sometimes feel like people criticize products as if they were offered to them personally. The pricing of a product may be absurd to them but if it were absurd to everyone there wouldn't be a market for it.

You can objectively compare the features between two products and criticize them that way. But to criticize the price you need to attach a monetary value to those features. With a framework one of those features is repairability, which to some is worth nothing, and to others it's worth a whole lot.

So is the frameworks pricing absurd? That depends on the person buying.

  7. No active development in the last 4 months?
  8. I think you're underestimating the computing power required to render (natively) at 4K. Some modern games can't even natively render at 1440p on high-end PCs.
  9. Right? People claim that the pricing is "absurd" as if they're forced to buy it. Framework offers repairable laptops at a fixed price. To some the repairability adds enough value to warrant the higher prices, to some it doesn't. (As well as customizability and mainline Linux kernel support).

I've found that if you're in the habit of repairing laptops, Frameworks may come cheap to you as you might have spare storage and ram around. Not being forced to buy ram and storage is one of the "luxuries" of buying framework.

  10. > It's been some times since I read his earlier books, possibly his tone has changed?

I think her point is more that his tone hasn't changed. If you're curious I would just watch the video. Angela comes with the perspective of also having read his earlier books and having liked them.

  11. Don't agree, she spreads misinformation, she's disrespectful to other scientists and basically has resorted to just claiming that everything in academics is wrong. YouTube fame has completely radicalized her.
  12. I think here more recent takes are not nearly as nuanced.
  13. Collier made a video fairly recently where she showed disappointment that her videos are watched by people who also watch Hossenfelder.

  14. You might not like Angela Collier's video on string theory[1].

  15. > Best of both worlds.

    That would be portable[1] services.

  16. glad to see the varlink IPC expanded upon
  17. I was personally looking for a bitmap font that resembled old fantasy games for use in a kernel. I was able to write a compile time constant parser for the .hex file format used here.

Do you have a link to the MUD you're working on?

  18. I found this when searching for a bitmap font.

I ended up writing a rust parser for the .hex file format for use in my kernel[1]. So I can now display the fantasy kernel on bare-metal :)

  19. > Not optimal for ease of compilation and building old versions of the Kernel. (You need a specific version of the nightly compiler to build a specific version of the Kernel)

It's trivial to install a specific version of the toolchain though.
