  1. Well they are put underground sometimes when there is a sound reason to do so. But mostly there is not a good reason to do so across hundreds of miles of agricultural land.
  2. My guess is that the droop is just due to gravity. And it is easier to affix in fewer places. But the style of photography exaggerates the effect.
  3. This is all a bit above my head. But the effects a compiler has on the computer are certainly not deterministic. It might do what you want or it might hit a weird driver bug or set off a false positive in some security software. And the more complex stacks get the he more this happens.
  4. Surely the most important area of innovation is not the end product itself but how it is manufactured at scale. That is what made Henry and what will make Chinese manufacturers win.
  5. Outside of fun stuff there is potential to just make chat another UI technology that is coupled with a specific API. Surely smaller models could do that, particularly as improvements happen. If that was good enough what would be the benefit of an app developer using an extra API? Particularly if Apple can offer an experience that can be familiar across apps.
  6. Or people are acting in good faith (generally) but want to avoid being accountable for something deeply serious. You end up with a web that neatly prevents anyone really being held responsible for anything. In an industry that was supposed to be vocational and treat its duty as sacred.
  7. Exactly! Its lucky we learned the lesson of WWII and invaded all those horrid dictators. Wait....
  8. I agree. Although not sure how sustained or substantive that "championing" ever really was.
  9. Surely the turbines could be fed from subsurface water that is not frozen.
  10. And once you have done those incredibly difficult things it is possible that the game changes entirely. A significant number of humans could live in space and have limited contact with planets.
  11. Im not attacking Israeli ethno-nationalism. I am attacking how you see the world so exclusively through that lense. The assumption that the only cause I could care about could be some kind of anti semitic activism. When actually I think this is a problem all over the place and for the most part Israeli's are just another victim of that.
  12. Perhaps I should have said "exclusive nation state membership abstractions". It makes no difference to the point. That the abstraction subjugates the individual.

And I don't see why American can't be an ethnicity or even religious type all on its own. None of this is static.

  13. Ethno-nationalism seems to be a strong factor in both Israeli and Palestinian politics. I can't think of a more direct example of ethno-nationalism than the Jewish state.

Also, my point was more about how conflict is perceived and litigated in politics and threads like this. Factoids about history are completely irrelevant to that. Its just another abstraction.

  14. Its all abstractions that help justify ethno-nationalism at the expense of concern about individual tragedy.
  15. The ICC could be considered to have jurisdiction over Gaza though. Although obviously that is debatable.
  16. People will defend the idea of Brexit but condemn the implementation. And people avoid debating it directly anyway.
  17. Maybe it all comes down to allowing people to feel comfortable driving more quickly on country roads. Also, the number of people who actually choose new cars is quite limited, and they may be influenced by stupid factors.
  18. The fact that you need intimate knowledge is evidence of the Kafkaesque nature. It describes a world where virtue doesn't exist except for the case of financial planning (which often equates quite well to luck).
  19. The USN have a research project around using electricity to produce synthetic fuel from sea water.
  20. Its fuelled with diesel, not natural gas. And all carriers need refuel at some point for their embarked aircraft.
